Finnish hour for the School orchestra
The European School of Luxembourg orchestra and choir exchange with the Chamber Choir of Vaskivuori Upper
Secondary School of Vantaa in Finland May 2012.
When Matti Suomela, a Finnish music teacher at the European School last year, left to return to his
post as Head of Music in the Vaskivuori School in Finland, he suggested that some form of musical
exchange between the schools might be possible. Noel Morgan, music teacher in the European
School, took up the suggestion and the result was one of the most successful and inspiring
exchanges that has ever been organised for the musicians in the school.
The Luxembourg group consisted of 15 members of the school peri-scolaire orchestra group and 6
singers from the school’s musical Bye Bye Birdie and were accompanied by Noel Morgan and
Miriam Bligh. The group set off for Finland in high spirits on Sunday 6th May, and flew to Helsinki via
Amsterdam, where travellers in the airport were treated to a choir rehearsal in the departure lounge
as our singers brushed up their repertoire!
On arrival in the evening, the students were introduced to their host families and went off for their
first experience of warm and welcoming Finnish hospitality. Music was very much on the agenda
from the word “go” the following morning when our singers rehearsed with the Finnish choir and the
orchestra rehearsed with the Finnish musicians. By 10.30 the first joint concert in the Uomarinne
Elementary School was underway and the second concert in the Vantaankoski Junior Secondary
School took place a mere two hours later! Fortunately, food was provided in abundance and at
frequent intervals for all the musicians whose sense of pride and pleasure in what they were able to
perform grew by the minute! The enthusiastic reception by the audiences also added
encouragement and the excellence of the Finnish musicians and singers gave a great boost to the
performances of our students.
In the afternoon, we were taken off to visit Heureka, the capital’s impressive new science centre,
where all members of the group spent an amusing and instructive couple of hours before returning
to Vantaa to spend the evening with their host families.
The following morning, the musicians from the European School of Luxembourg were the sole
entertainers for the whole-school assembly where some 500 Finnish students gathered to
encourage and applaud our group. There was then a series of rehearsals for the most important
concert of the visit which was to take place in the evening in front of a paying public. Our students
were also given a tour of the school and enviously watched the Finnish students working in the wellequipped recording studios, rehearsing singing or dancing, or following a normal timetable. Then it
was time to visit Helsinki itself and under a glorious blue sky the group enjoyed a guided tour of the
capital and had a fun photo session next to the commemorative statue of the Finnish composer
Sibelius.
After a very quick shopping session, it was time to prepare for the evening concert, a polished and
inspiring musical experience followed by speeches, the presentation of gifts as well as a buffet
supper with the host families. All the students were exhilarated yet sad to be leaving the next day.

However, departure was made gentler by a fascinating excursion by ferry to the Suomenlinna Island
Fortress and a picnic in the sun before heading for the airport and home.

After lunch and a welcome from Mme
Vassilacou and Mrs Laatu, both groups
of students excitedly met up again and
embarked on a school tour and
rehearsal to prepare for the evening’s
concert in the primary school. The
Portuguese castle décor lent a very
European flavour to the evening and
the stunning performance of the Finnish
choir, all dressed in traditional costumes, won the enthusiastic and delighted appreciation of the
audience. The orchestra group rose to the occasion and played with confidence and pleasure and
the welcome contribution by the orchestra classes conducted by Thomas Meunier revealed even
more musical talent within the school.
The Finnish group gave two more concerts the next day and then
joined our orchestra and singers for the final concert of the
programme. The Choir of the Parents and Friends of the European
School of Luxembourg conducted by Tilman Pods also participated in
the evening’s programme and added yet
another international touch to the evening.

were both present and addressed the
audience and participants to express their
pleasure and support for the exchange.
The parents of the participants provided a
magnificient buffet supper after the concert so
that singers, players and host families could
enjoy a convivial moment together on the final
evening. The evening ended on a wonderfully emotional note with
speeches, flowers and gifts and the hope that such exchanges will continue in the future.
Thursday 17th was the very last day and we were fortunate in having clear skies and sunshine to
take our Finnish guests on a guided tour of the casemates before escorting them to the station for
their departure.
Such a super exchange, so many good memories, so many warm relationships created, so much
quality music played, sung and heard. A big thank-you to our school administration, to the APEEE,
to the staff and students of Vaskivuori school, and to our dedicated staff who all combined their
efforts to make the whole adventure such a success.

Lorsque Matti Suomela, professeur de musique à l’Ecole Européenne l’année passée, a repris son
poste de responsable de la musique à l’école de Vaskivuori en Finlande, il dit en partant qu’un
échange musical entre les deux écoles serait envisageable. Noël Morgan a saisi au bond la
proposition et le résultat fut l’un des échanges les plus réussis et plein d’inspiration pour les
musiciens de l’école.
Le groupe luxembourgeois composé de 15 membres des activités périscolaires de l’orchestre et de
6 chanteurs de la comédie musical Bye Bye Birdie, était accompagné par Noel Morgan, chef
d’orchestre et Miriam Bligh. Avec entrain le groupe s’est envolé pour Helsinki le dimanche 6 mai et,
en transit par Amsterdam, devant répéter son répertoire le plus possible, a offert aux autres
voyageurs un récital impromptu dans le hall d’attente !

A l’arrivée les élèves ont rencontré leurs familles d’accueil et ont pu
prendre la mesure de la merveilleuse hospitalité des finnois. La
musique était bien au centre de tout et dès le lendemain matin les
élèves de la chorale et de l’orchestre ont pu répéter avec leurs
homologues. A 10h30 ils donnèrent leur premier concert à l’école
primaire d’Uomarinne et deux heures plus tard un deuxième à l’école
secondaire de Vantaankoski ! Heureusement il y avait suffisamment
de nourriture pour que tout le monde puisse se remettre d’aplomb
entre chaque performance. Grâce à l’accueil chaleureux du public et
l’exemple donné par les musiciens finnois, nos élèves ont pris de
l’assurance, et de plus en plus de plaisir. De quoi les rendre encore
plus fiers de leurs performances.
Au cours de l’après-midi, le groupe a pu visiter le nouveau centre
scientifique Heureka avant de retourner à Vantaa dans les familles.
Le lendemain matin, le groupe luxembourgeois assurait seul le spectacle devant une
salle de 500 personnes. Puis se succédèrent des répétitions intenses pour préparer le grand
concert de la soirée devant un public qui avait acheté ses billets ! Nos élèves ont pu cependant
visiter l’école et envier les élèves finnois d’avoir l’occasion de travailler dans des salles
d’enregistrement, de répétitions dédiées au chant ou à la dance et ont pu suivre le déroulement
d’une journée type. Puis une brève visite d’Helsinki sous un ciel radieux, une photo souvenir sous la
statue de Sibelius et une session éclair de shopping. Le concert du soir s’est formidablement
déroulé et après les discours, les cadeaux et le buffet avec les familles d’accueil le temps des au
revoir arriva avec tristesse mais aussi une certaine excitation de savoir que bientôt ce seraient les
retrouvailles à Luxembourg. Avant de partir pour l’aéroport un pic nic sur l’ile de Somenlinna adoucit
le départ.

avec impatience par leurs
amis luxembourgeois. Après
un discours de bienvenue de
Mme Vassilacou et Mme
Laatu, les élèves ont fait le
tour de l’école et ont repris le chemin des répétitions pour se préparer pour le concert donné à
l’école primaire. Le décor de château portugais de la scène ajouta un charme tout européen à la
performance exceptionnelle de la chorale finlandaise habillée en costumes traditionnels. L’orchestre
réussit aussi sa performance et les musiciens dirigés par Thomas Meunier révélèrent l’étendue des
talents existant au sein de l’école.
Le groupe finlandais donna deux concerts le jour suivant et rejoignit le
groupe luxembourgeois pour le concert final le soir. La « Chorale des
parents et amis de l’école européenne » conduite par Tilman Pods apporta
une touche internationale supplémentaire à cette soirée. Mme Vassilacou et
M. Ian Dennis (Président de l‘APEEE) ont exprimé leur soutien à cette
initiative et remercié les chanteurs et musiciens pour le plaisir qu’ils ont
offert à toute l’assemblée.
Les parents ont préparé un magnifique buffet à la fin du concert et
ensemble tout le monde a pu partager un moment convivial avant de devoir
se dire au revoir en exprimant le souhait qu’un tel projet puisse se
renouveler dans le futur. Le lendemain, après la visite des casemates, les amis finlandais
prirent le train pour rentrer.

Ce fut une expérience magnifique et très réussie à tous points de vue. Merci à l’administration de
l’école, à l’APEEE, aux membres de l’école de Vaskivuori et à celle de l’école du Luxembourg
d’avoir rendu possible cette aventure si enrichissante.

Zumba !
Le 28 mai, comme nos photos le démontrent, la scène de l’Ecole Européenne était en ébullition !
Costumes, musique, de quoi s’agiter et se dépenser en s’amusant, du plus petit au plus grand, filles
et garçons !
The Zumba show was dynamic and colourful as our pictures show. Fun and exercice for all, from
the younguest to the oldest, girls and boys!

Extracurricular activities - Activités périscolaires
The 2012/13 exercice is the fourth under our stewardship, and we have again taken
the opportunity to introduce some significant developments. These are fully described
on our website www.activitesperiscolaires.lu where you can find the full list of activities
and the general terms and conditions. We have made the upmost efforts to offer
similar opportunities for pupils of both schools and have again increased the number
of courses available.
In line with the policy recommendation for the 2010/2011 General Assembly and the
new APEEE statutes, priority access to the activities will be given to registered, paidup members of the Parents’ Association (APEEEL1 or APEEEL2). Parents will receive
information on how to register in the summer. Courses will start 1st October 2012.
Parents can inscribe their children to participate in an activity even if the child does not attend that
school, children from Lux 1 can attend Lux2 activities and vice versa. Please note however that
there is no transport foreseen in the mobility plan for this purpose.
L’Association des Parents d’Elèves organise les activités périscolaires pour la quatrième année
consécutive et à cette occasion nous avons de nouveau développé de façon conséquente l’offre et
l’organisation de ces activités. Vous trouverez tous les détails de ces évolutions sur le site
www.activitesperiscolaires.lu ainsi que la liste des activités proposées et les conditions générales
applicables. Nous avons fait en sorte que l’offre de cours soit la plus équitable possible entre les
deux écoles et avons considérablement augmenté le nombre de cours proposés.
Conformément à la recommandation de politique de l'Assemblée
Générale 2010/2011, priorité sera donnée aux membres à jour de leur
cotisation pour l’année en cours (2011/2012). Nous adresserons aux
parents les indications pour els isncriptions au cours de l’été. Les cours
débuteront le 1er octobre 2012.
Il est possibe pour un enfant de Lux 1 de participer à un cours à Lux 2 et
vice versa. Cependant, merci de noter qu’il n’y a pas de plan de transport
spécifique pour cela.
The Video Club
As the 2012/2013 extra-curricular activities programme is being planned, it seemed interesting to
meet Chris Atkinson who coaches the longest running extracurricular activity at the school, “The
Video Club”.
The activity started in 1981, with a limited amount of resources that built up through the years.
Thanks to the support of the APEEE’s périscolaire organisation two new computers and some video
editing software arrived this year1. The activity has always been a success with the pupils as it
allows them to develop skills that are more and more in use today.

competitions. The age limit criteria of these competitions makes it sometimes difficult, they are often
too young! This is something organizers might want to review as more and more children are
younger when they start “playing” with these tools. As it stands,

A lot of the work the group is involved in is linked to the school community life, they recorded the
School Musical, the Battle of the Bands concerts, the Baccalauréat proclamations event, and all
concerts, theatre plays, or guests speakers in a class... Coordinators ask for the events to be filmed
and the team organizes itself according to experience, personal tastes and of course availability as
pupils have to attend the events sometimes several times.
A professional from the Office des publications had a work session with the “beginners group”,
imagining short adverts (for a newspaper, drinks,…). It was a good exercise to learn how to be
clear, short and punchy.
The Video Club will be running again next year in both schools.

Alors que le programme des activités périscolaires 2012/2013 prend forme, allons rendre visite à
Christopher Atkinson qui anime le Vidéo Club, l’activité la plus ancienne de l’école. Démarrée en
1981 avec des ressources limitées, l’équipement s’est étoffé au fil des années et récemment
l’APEEE a fourni deux nouveaux ordinateurs ainsi que des logiciels. Le succès de cette activité ne
s’est jamais démenti car elle permet aux élèves d’apprendre à utiliser des outils qui leurs seront
utiles tout au long de leur vie.
Bien entendu l’arrivée des technologies digitales a
révolutionné le procédé d’édition de vidéos. Alors que
les élèves de ce cours devaient porter des
équipements lourds, encombrants et très coûteux
ceux d’aujourd’hui utilisent des outils légers et
accessibles à tous. Ce n’est plus un hobby réservé à
quelques chanceux et aujourd’hui on peut facilement
non seulement faire mais aussi diffuser son film via
les réseaux sociaux sur internet. Une vraie révolution.
Parfois cependant le matériel collector sort des boites
car il s’avère utile pour effectuer quelques
manipulations que les nouveaux outils ne peuvent
pas réaliser ...
Les élèves travaillent essentiellement sur des projets personnels, pour l’anniversaire d’un proche
par exemple. Mais pour garder un esprit d’équipe au groupe, Christopher Atkinson les inscrit à des
compétitions. L’âge limite est souvent un frein car ils sont souvent considérés comme trop jeunes.
Cela devrait être revu par les organisateurs car c’est de plus en plus jeune que les élèves
s’amusent avec ces outils. C’est donc en tant que compétiteurs non officiels que Simon Gardner,
Alban Friden, Mateusz Palarz- Michalak et Quentin Martinez ont gagné un prix pour la compétition
Dexia. Alannah Lenonard quant à elle a gagné le deuxième prix de l’ambassade des Etats-Unis, un
IPod et 300 euro ! Félicitations à tous !
Une grande part du travail du groupe est aussi d’enregistrer les évènements de la vie scolaire, les
concerts, les pièces de théâtre, la remise des diplômes du Baccalauréat… Les organisateurs
demandent au groupe que l’évènement soit filmé et on s’organise en fonction de l‘expérience, des
goûts personnels et de la disponibilité bien entendu car il faut parfois assister à plusieurs
représentations.
Avec l’aide d’une personne de l‘office des publications, le groupe des débutants a travaillé sur la
production de courtes publicités, un bon exercice pour apprendre à être bref et percutant !
Le Vidéo Club sera de nouveau ouvert aux inscriptions l’année prochaine pour les deux écoles.

La fête de l’école – School Summer Fête
Que voulez-vous, c’est le mois de juin le plus pluvieux depuis des décennies… Et la fête de
l’école n’y a pas échappé, alors tous aux abris ! Merci à tous ceux qui ont permis d’organiser
l’installation de la fête à la dernière minute.
Malgré cela, l’ambiance était au beau fixe grace à des spectacles enjoués et plein d’énergie. La
compétition de football a rassemblé près de 100 participants, l’équipe des parents a gagné la coupe
de basketball, le test de sécurité routière a réjoui les enfants et la cantine ressemblait à une ruche
avec ses stands nationaux et les différents stands d’informations. C’est toujours un bon moment
lorsque la communauté scolaire se retrouve pour partager ce qu’elle produit de meilleur.

MERCI aux élèves de l'école maternelle pour leur beau spectacle, à ceux du primaire pour leur
prestation d'animation tout au long de la journée, à ceux du secondaire pour leur participation active
qui aux stands nationaux, qui à la vente de tombolas ou à la participation au marché aux puces …
MERCI aux parents pour la tenu des stands nationaux, leur approvisionnement, à ceux qui ont
surveillé et animé les jeux, aux volontaires présents pour aider et démonter les stands, à effectuer
différentes tâches tout au long de la journée et… à ranger et nettoyer.
MERCI à l'école pour son soutien,
aux enseignants qui ont encadré et animé les activités artistiques, sportives,
aux différents clubs de danse et autres pour l'animation.
La Fête de l’Ecole 2012 a connu un beau succès et a effectué un bénéfice de plus de 6000€ qui
sont destinés à équiper des projets de Lux 1.

L’ex "Comité Tiers Monde" a officialisé sa nouvelle appellation « Actions sans frontières », les "Mots
de Zaza" et "Friends of the Secondary Library" ont également participé à la fête. Ils disposent de leurs
propres recettes.
Il est évidemment impossible de remercier tout le monde nominativement, mais merci à nos
secrétaires, aux concierges, aux "Messieurs Securitas", aux employés de l'atelier de l'école, qui
répondent présents tous les ans et participent à la réussite de la fête.
ENCORE MERCI ET BRAVO À TOUS !
Despite the bad weather outdoors, the event was a great success in all the different elements. The
maternelle shows were wonderful, there were more than 100 pupils taking part in the football
competition, the parents won the basketball tournament (!), the children who did the cycling test were
ecstatic, there was a real buzz about the main event in the canteen - the mix of events, cultural stands,
information desks seemed to work well and it was a genuine pleasure to see our school community
coming together in this way.
THANK YOU to the pupils of the nursery school for their beautiful show, to those of the primary for
their co-ordination throughout the day, to those of the secondary for their active participation within the
national stands, selling raffle tickets or participation in the flea market.
THANK YOU to the parents for their support and help in the national stands, their supplies, to those
who supervised and managed the games, to the volunteers on hand to help set up and dismantle the
stands, to carry out various tasks throughout the day and to clear up at the end of the day.
THANK YOU to the school for its support, to the teachers who framed and managed the artistic
activities, sports, to the various dancing clubs and others for the co-ordination and, of course.
The benefit this year is targeted for a project in the Luxembourg 1 school. Please refer to the French
text to see the contributions of the national stands to the day.

The ex "Third World Committee" presented its new name “Actions sans frontières”, the "Mots de Zaza"
and "Friends of the Secondary Library" also participate, they keep and account for their income
separately.
It is obviously impossible to thank everyone by name, but thank you to our secretaries, the concierges,
the security personnel, the employees of the school workshops, who are present every year and
contribute to the success of the fair.

highlights of the annual school fête. This year’s Basketball tournament winners are the Parents’ team

Actions sans Frontières
En février 2012 un groupe d’élèves se réunissait pour changer le nom du comité
Actions Tiers Monde et ses visuels.
Suite à une formation dispensée par une experte le travail a été productif. Toute
l’équipe est heureuse de présenter :
Le nouveau nom : Actions Sans Frontières
La nouvelle devise: Uniting as one
Les élèves ont aussi créé un nouveau logo.
Pour sensibiliser leurs camarades à leur travail ils ont
organisé des ventes de gâteaux à l’Ecole Européenne
durant le mois de mai. Avec les fonds ils ont pu fabriquer
des autocollants vendus lors de la fête de l’école.
L’ensemble des bénéfices sera reversé aux actions
humanitaires du comité. Les nouvelles bannières et les
bracelets sont en cours d’impression, en attendant les
moyens du bord ont fait l’affaire !
The Comité Tiers Monde is stepping forward with a new
name, “Actions sans frontieres”, a new logo designed by pupils, and a
new motto “Uniting as one”.
In order to promote the comité`s actions pupils have sold cakes and stickers at the school fête and the
new banners and bracelets will be ready for next season`s fund raising activities.
Mérite Jeunesse Luxembourg
After much rain the Sunday before, the skies finally dried out on
Monday 25th June to allow the 8 groups of the Mérite Jeunesse to
accomplish their “summer” expeditions, one of four parts they have to
perform for the award. 5 “Bronze” groups, walking a minimum of 25
kms, 3 “Silver” groups walking 48 kms and all sleeping in campsites
two nights.
From the Lultzhausen Youth Hostel and other starting points, all
happily and bravely trekked around the National Park of La HauteSure and its magnificient lake. They put to the test the skills they
learnt throught the year, map reading, orienteering, setting up camp. “Red sky
at night, shepherds delight” and the next morning, so it
was, sunshine! That helped to keep moral going to carry
heavy bags (12kgs usually...). A challenging first time for
the bronzes, a more familiar experience for the silvers,
all had to face changing weather conditions and
complicated terrain with plenty of hills and loops.
The teachers accompagnying the group, John Mallon,
Jan Sims, Trevor King, Tom Thorpe, Annette Weaver,
kept a vigilant eye on all, helped the lost ones to find
their tracks back, checked food and plenty of water were
available to keep energy levels up and they got to know
the area quite well as in total both tutors`cars traveled
650 kms in three days in a 50 kms radius area!

The European School, of all secondary schools in Luxembourg, has the
highest number of pupils taking part
in the Mérite Jeunesse awards. The
team hopes to keep the activity going
but needs more teachers to get
involved in the award open to years
4-5-6 pupils from ALL sections (and
not just the UK section as it is often
believed). The current team will be
based in Lux 1 next year and a new
group will be organised to continue
this valuable activity in Lux 2.
Après les pluies diluviennes de la veille, lundi 25 juin le ciel s’est enfin
éclairci pour permettre aux élèves du Mérite Jeunesse d’effectuer leurs expéditions d’été. 5 Groupes
« Bronze », 3 « Argent » en route, pour un minimum de 25 et 48 kilomètres respectivement, sur trois
jours de marche et de camping.
Partis de l’Auberge de Jeunesse de Lultzhausen ou aux
alentours, les enfants ont courageusement marché au coeur du
Parc Naturel de la Haute-Sure et découvert son magnifique lac.
Ils ont pu mettre en pratique les techniques qu’ils ont apprises
au cours de l’année, lecture de carte, orientation, dressage du
campement. Le lendemain, le soleil était au rendez-vous et cela
a grandement aidé a garder le moral pour affronter la deuxiéme
journée de portage de sacs devenus de plus en pesant au fur et
à mesure que les kilomètres s’accumulaient dans les jambes.
Un vrai défi pour les débutants « Bronze », une expérience plus
familière pour les « Argent », tous ont du faire face à des
conditions climatiques capricieuses et un terrain escarpé et
sinueux.
Les tuteurs ont gardé un œil vigilant sur l’ensemble des
groupes, remettant sur le bon chemin ceux qui s’étaient égarés, vérifiant qu’ils mangeaient et buvaient
assez pour garder de l’énergie. Ils ont aussi pu apprécier la région, les deux voitures ont parcouru
près de 650 kms en trois jours de rayonnement sur cette zone de 50 kms !
L’Ecole Européenne est celle du Luxembourg qui présente le
plus d’élèves au Mérite Jeunesse. Cette activité est ouverte aux
élèves années 4-5-6 de TOUTES les sections. L’équipe cherche
activement des professeurs pour soutenir l’encadrement des
groupes qui se formeront à Lux 1 et Lux 2 l’année prochaine.

Following recent discussions in the Joint Teaching Committee of the European Schools System, about
extending the use of programmable calculators also into the updated curriculum for scientific subjects
and economics, there was a written consultation on the proposal in April. This was overwhelmingly
supported and will now be implemented.
Suite aux discussions récentes au sein du Comité Pédagogique Mixte du Système des Ecoles
Européennes, concernant l'utilisation de l’outil technologique accompagnant les nouveaux
programmes de mathématiques pour les autres matières scientifiques et les sciences économiques,
une procédure écrite a été organisée en avril. Une majorité dominante s'est exprimée en faveur de
l'idée, qui sera maintenant mise en route.
