Portraits of Men in the Great War
“Face to face on the walls, men of yesterday and today works highlight how
behind the war and slaughter, the noble youth of the world came to meet on the
ground completely strange and hostilities foreign”
Présentation :
The Musée de Picardie is the Fine Art museum of the city of Amiens, situated in the Somme department, region Picardy, in
the North of France. On the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of the First World War (1914-1918), the Musée de
Picardie wish to pay a tribute to the soldiers of the ancient colonies who participated in the conflict. Joseph-Félix Bouchor,
who was an official painter of the French army during the WWI, has painted some portraits of those soldiers who left their
land to fight in the Somme. They are precious witnesses of the diversity of the communities who participated in the conflict.
As the Musée de Picardie is also involved in Contemporary art, it seemed relevant to ask young artists to propose an answer
or a reaction to the portraits of their ancestors. We would like to exhibit portraits of young people in front of the paintings :
to confront the ancient and the young. Those contemporary portraits must be short videos, showed in small screens in front
of the paintings.
