Sea
“How I pity all those who have never seen the sea.”
Poseidon’s power! Neptune’s salty empire!
Married to land – immortally embraced!
The waving arms of the sea will never tire;
To shores the ocean blood will ever race.
Round isles and continents these currents probe;
A diving whale shows off its giant grace!
If ocean waves are just Thalassa’s robe
Then shoreline surf is naught by nature’s lace.
The cruel sea attacks the unarmed rocks;
In time the tiny stone is ground to sand;
Yet with the tides the sea is proudly mocked,
And fish from ocean depths give life to land.
Deep with danger, dark with unknown dread,
Yet still upon the sea man tries to tread !

La mer ! Puissance salée de l’empire noir !
Mariée à la terre, aux embrasses sauvages !
Poséidon ! Ton bras levant encore à voir !
Le sang de l’océan coule et coule aux rivages.
Autour des continents pénètrent les courants,
Une baleine plonge aux profondeurs marines,
Si les marées ne sont que les manteaux pliants
L’éclat des vagues peint la dentelle divine.
La mer cruelle rode un rocher vulnérable,
Le caillou par des siècles se moud en sable;
Neptune se moque de forts ressacs taquins;
Les poissons si libres sont-ils nés du destin?
Profonde de danger, forte, inconnue, obscure,
La mer séduit un autre homme à son aventure.
