Petit mais costaud
Les gars de Metal Blade Records ont pris l'habitude de signer les
meilleurs découvertes metal sur le plan internationale, et ne fait pas
exception avec Across The Sun ! Ce nouveau combo venu de Portland
dans l'Oregon (USA), actif sur la scène américaine depuis déjà sept
ans mais resté très longtemps underground, sort en 2011 son tout
premier album complet intitulé Before The Night Takes Us. Si la
musique du groupe reste metalcore, il est vrai que Brandon Davis et
ses acolytes ont su apporter à leurs compositions une touche assez
personnelle, notamment teintées de couches de claviers. Leur
spécialiste des sons électro, Shane Murray, a répondu à nos questions
pour présenter Across The Sun au public européen.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): Première question très importante : comment se porte Across
The Sun en ce moment ? Vous êtes confiants pour la sortie ce mois-ci de votre premier
vrai album ?
Shane Murray: On ne tient plus en place, vraiment ! On est très impatients que ce disque
sorte et qu'on parte sur les routes pour faire découvrir nos nouvelles chansons. C'est
apparemment un mois très important pour le metal, un paquet de bons albums sont très
attendus. J'ai vu que certains en parlaient comme la « Marche du Prog-Metal ». Je trouve
que ça nous correspond vraiment très bien.
S: Vous êtes un très jeune groupe au sein de Metal Blade Records, mais Across The
Sun compose et tourne déjà depuis sept ans maintenant ! Comment expliques-tu que
vous ayez pris autant de tant avant d'être signés sur un bon label et de sortir votre
premier album ?
Shane: On n'a jamais voulu compromettre notre son, ne jamais se conformer à une mode,
couper nos cheveux d'une certaine façon, ou nous habiller selon les dernières tendances. On
a simplement essayé de parfaire notre style de musique. On est des mecs normaux, fidèles,
et sans artifices. Aussi, on ne tenait pas à signer avec un label sans qu'on ne croit en lui, ou
en ce qu'on faisait musicalement.
S: Apparemment, vous êtes vraiment très contents de ce nouvel accord avec Metal
Blade ! Comment s'est passé cette rencontre et que pensez-vous que ce label apportera
à votre groupe ?
Shane: On est très excités à l'idée de bosser avec Metal Balde, et ils nous soutiennent
vraiment beaucoup depuis le début. On a aussi eu beaucoup de chances d'avoir un bon
manager pour nous épauler. Sans lui, on serait certainement encore en train de ramer dans
des petits tournées autoproduites... Metal Blade a tellement d'influence à l'échelle globale
dans le monde du metal ! Et spécialement sur le marché européen. Ce public est hyper
important pour nous, car je pense qu'il appréciera encore plus notre musique en général.
S: Votre dernier EP intitulé Pestilence & Rapture a été très bien accueilli par le public.
En quoi penses-tu que ce premier album sera meilleur que cet EP ? Comment vois-tu
la progression d'Across The Sun depuis Pestilence... ?
Shane: On a vraiment essayé de se laisser aller sur ce premier album, pour explorer toutes
les dynamiques possibles, pour montrer au monde de quoi on est capables à ce stade de
notre progression en tant que musiciens. C'est difficile d'en faire autant avec un simple EP.
Chaque chanson de notre premier album a son identité propre. C'était quelque-chose de très
important pour nous, car cet album servira de première fois pour beaucoup de gens qui nous
découvriront grâce à lui. Toutes nos performances individuelles sont meilleures,
techniquement, nos oreilles musicales sont bien mieux développées, et on sent que ce
premier album est plein de maturité.

S: Pour ce premier album, vous avez choisi Daniel Castleman comme producteur et
ingénieur du son, qui avait déjà bossé avec des groupes comme As I Lay Dying, Winds
Of Plague ou encore Impending Doom. Etait-ce un choix évident pour vous, ou aviezvous d'autres noms sur votre liste ?
Shane: On avait quelques gars à l'esprit. L'organisation et les commodités pouvaient aussi
jouer un rôle dont notre choix. Mais on savait tous ce dont Daniel était capable. On aime
particulièrement sa vision très robuste de la production metal. C'est un perfectionniste et il a
une très bonne éthique de travail, exactement comme nous. On ne pouvait pas être plus
satisfait en ce moment qu'avec Daniel, en tant que personne et en tant qu'ingénieur du son.

S: Ce premier album s'intitule donc Before The Night Takes Us. Quelle est votre
signification pour ce titre et comment l'avez-vous trouvé ?
Shane: Globalement, ce titre fait référence au fait de toujours se battre pour une meilleure
situation que celle qu'on a vécu précédemment. Dégager les gens ou les situations gênantes,
et ensuite aller de l'avant, vers de meilleurs pâturages. Ca m'est venu en voiture, en
conduisant et en écoutant de la musique.
S: Que peux-tu nous dire de la pochettte de ce nouvel album ? Qu'attend cet homme à
la valise selon toi ?
Shane: Il résume en fait tout le concept de l'album. Il arrive d'une forêt très sombre, et il se
rend compte qu'il n'est pas prêt d'arriver dans cette grande ville, que beaucoup de choses le
séparent encore de sa destination. Ca peut aussi être considéré comme allégorie pour nous
en tant que groupe. Nous avons eu des débuts très humbles, mais nous savons d'où nous
venons, et aussi que nous avons encore un long chemin à parcourir pour atteindre nos rêves
les plus fous.
S: Ce n'est pas commun d'entendre du clavier dans ce type de music, et les sons
d'Across The Sun sont assez personnels. Pour ma part, je pense que ça donne plutôt
bien dans des chansons comme « Tipping The Scales » ou « Descent & Discovery »,
mais qu'ils sont inutiles dans d'autres titres comme « Ghosts Of Grandeur » et même
trop évidents dans « Before The Night Takes Us ». Que penses-tu que ces sons
apportent à chacun de vos morceaux ?
Shane: La chose la plus difficile à faire quand tu fais partie d'un groupe, c'est de
t'individualiser par rapport aux autres. On aime tous le metal moderne européen, surtout les
groupes avec un côté un peu « symphonique ». Des groupes comme Dimmu Borgir, Dark
Tranquility, Soilwork, Nightwish etc... On a aussi beaucoup de respect envers les groupes
progressifs qu'on a écouté en grandissant, comme Genesis, Yes ou encore Journey. Ces

musiciens ont été des pioniers dans l'art d'utiliser des orgues, des pads atmosphériques et des
synthétiseurs. On pense que ces instruments créent un son encore plus unique, et nous aident
à nous identifier par rapport à nos concurrents metalcore.
S: Et penses-tu qu'une seule guitare soit suffisante pour jouer ce genre de musique en
live ? N'avez-vous jamais pensé à trouver un second guitariste ?
Shane: Oui, je le pense. Notre guitariste, Sam, a une très bonne oreille et un son live très
complet. C'est arrivé par le passé qu'on ait un deuxième guitariste, mais à chaque fois ça
nous donnait l'impression d'étouffer nos chansons, de ne pas leur laisser d'espace pour
souffler. Et ça nous permet aussi de mieux répartir les couches de notre musique entre
chacun d'entre-nous, bien mieux que si nous avions deux guitares à parts égales.
S: Selon vous, les paroles de cet album abordent le fait de se débarasser de ses propres
démons. Avais-tu personnellement des démons à virer ? Comment avez-vous choisi ces
thèmes ? Votre passé a-t-il été aussi sombre que vous le dépeignez dans vos textes ?
Shane: Notre chanteur est quelqu'un de très candide et honnête par rapport aux messages
qu'il transmet à travers ses paroles. Il a conçu un concept global pour les textes de cet album
pendant que nous le composions. Je ne peux évidemment pas parler en son nom, mais je sais
qu'il pense sincèrement que tout ce qu'il écrit lui vient directement du coeur et de ses
expériences personnelles.
S: J'ai entendu dire que le premier single que vous avez choisi pour représenter cet
album est la chansons « Song For The Hopeless ». Comptez-vous tourner un clip vidéo
pour illustrer ce single ? Et avez-vous déjà des idées pour représenter l'univers
graphique d'Across The Sun ?
Shane: On adorerait tourner un clip. On est un groupe très tournée vers l'aspect visuel,
comme tu peux le voir avec la pochette du disque. Mais nous n'avons encore aucun plan
prévu pour un éventuel tournage.

S: En mars et avril, vous tournerez à nouveau à travers les Etats-Unis pour
promouvoir ce premier album. Mais prévoyez-vous de venir jouer aussi en Europe et
dans notre pays la Belgique ? Etes-vous déjà venus ici, et si oui, que pensez-vous de
notre public ?
Shane: Rien ne nous ferait plus plaisir, mais j'imagine que ça dépendra de la façon dont
notre album sera reçu par le public. L'investissement pour envoyer un groupe en Europe est
substentiel, donc le faire pour un premier album, c'est assez délicat. Comme je l'ai dit tout à
l'heure, on aime beaucoup de groupes européens, et ce serait un honneur de partager la
scène avec tous ces musiciens qui sont pour nous des héros !

S: Si tu pouvais choisir un seul groupe avec qui tourner, lequel serait-ce, et pourquoi ?
Y a-t-il un groupe ou un artiste que tu rêves de rencontrer ?
Shane: Wow, c'est une question difficile. Personnellement, j'adore vraiment Opeth.
S: Question rituelle chez Rock'N'Balls : quel serait ton TOP 3 des meilleurs albums
metal de tous les temps, et pourquoi ?
Shane: Encore une question difficile ! J'écoute tellement de musique et de styles différents...
Mais si je devais en choisir 3, ce serait :
1) Tool: Aenema – c'est artistique, très recherché techniquement, et visuellement
époustouflants. Les deux parties de mon cerveaux travaillent quand j'écoute du Tool.
2) Pantera: Far Beyond Driven – c'est cet album qui m'a vraiment plongé dans le heavy
metal. Je l'avais sur cassette audio et je l'ai écoutée jusqu'à ce qu'elle explose dans mon
lecteur.
3) Opeth: Blackwater Park – même chose mais pour le côté death metal. Leur musique est
tellement dynamique, le chant clair et gueulé est terrible, les solos de guitare sont énormes,
et il y a aussi de très beaux passages de piano et de guitare acoustique. Ca tue.
S: Eh bien merci, Shane, pour cette interview ! As-tu un dernier mot pour vos fans et
nos lecteurs ?
Shane: Merci de nous aider à faire découvrir notre musique au public européen. On espère

The guys from Metal Blade Records use to sign the best new metal
discoveries of the international scene, and Across The Sun won't be
the exception! This new combo from Portland, Oregon (USA), being
part of the american scene for seven years now but who stayed
underground for a long time, is released in 2011 its very first fulllength record entitled Before The Night Takes Us. If the band's music
stays metalcore, it's true that Brandon Davis and his bandmates
succeeded in bringing some personal touch to their compositions, in
particular with keyboards layers. Their electronic sounds specialist,
Shane Murray, answered to our questions to introduce Across The Sun
to the European crowd.

Sponge (Rock'N'Balls): First important question: how does Across The Sun feel for the
moment? Confident about this first full length record coming out this month?
Shane Murray: We feel giddy really. The waiting for the record to come and take the new
material on the road. This is a great month for metal, so many early-awaited albums coming
out. I’ve seen it coined as “Prog-metal March.” I feel we fit right in with that aesthetic.
S: You're a young band within Metal Blade, but ATS has been writing and touring for
7 years now! How do you explain that you've took so much time before being signed on
a good label and releasing your first record?
Shane: We’ve never compromised our sound. No comforming to a current trend, cutting our
hair a certain way, or dressing ourselves in the latest fashion craze. We’ve only tried to
perfect our particular brand of music. We’re just regular dudes. No gimmicks. We also
didn’t want to settle for signing for a record label that we didn’t believe in, or believe in
what we were doing musically.
S: It seems that you're really happy about this new deal with Metal Blade! How did
this meeting happen and what do you think this label will bring to the band?
Shane: We are very excited to be with Metal Blade, and they’ve been nothing but supportive
thus far. We also have been blessed by having an amazing manager in our corner. Without
him, we’d probably still be grinding it out on some self-funded mini tours. Metal Blade has
such great influence on a global scale. Specifically the European market. That audience is
key for us because I think will be able to appreciate our music most, generally speaking.
S: Your last EP called Pestilence & Rapture has been highly acclaimed by the public. In
what way do you think that this first record will do best than this EP? How do you see
the progression of ATS since Pestilence?
Shane: We really tried to lay it all out there on this full length. Exploring every dynamic that
we could, to show the world what we are fully capable at this time in our progession as
musicians. Its hard to really do that with an EP. Every song on our full-length is has a
unique identity. That was an important statement for us to make, as this album will be the
1st time most people will be exposed to us. All our individual performances are better,
technique-wise, our musical ears are further developed, and we feel that its very mature
sounding for a debut album.
S: For this first record, you chose Daniel Castleman as the producer/engineer, who
previously worked with bands like As I Lay Dying, Winds Of Plague or Impending
Doom. Was it an obvious choice for you or did you have some other names on your
list?

Shane: We had a few guys in mind. Scheduling and convenience can also play a role in who
is selected. But we all know what Daniel is capable of. We especially like his beefy
approach to metal production. He’s a perfectionist and has a strong work ethic, just as we
do. So we couldn’t have been more pleased with Daniel as a person, and as an engineer.

S: This first record is called Before The Night Takes Us. What's the band's meaning to
this title and how did you find it?
Shane: Speaking in a general manner, it refers to always striving to be in a better place than
where you were previously. Dropping people or situation that have been a previous
hinderance; then moving forward to new and better pastures. It came to me while driving
and listening to music.
S: Can you give us some explanations about the artwork of this new record? What is
this suitecased man waiting for?
Shane: He’s taking it all in. Thinking about the dark forest from whence he came. At the
same time, seeing that he’s not quite reached that great city and knows that there are things
that still distance him from his destination. It can be used as an allegory for us as a band as
well. We came from humble beginnings, and now can reflect on where we came from. Yet
we still know we have a long ways to go to reach our brightest dreams.
S: This is not usual to hear keyboard keys in this type of music, and ATS keys are very
personal. I personaly think that the keys are great in songs like « Tipping The Scales »
or « Descent & Discovery », but a little bit useless on a song like « Ghosts Of
Grandeur » and even too obvious on « Before The Night Takes Us ». What do you
think it brings to each of your songs?
Shane: The hardest thing to do as a band is to separate yourself from the rest of the pack. We
all love modern European metal, especially the bands with a symphonic overtone. Band like
Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, Soilwork, Nightwish etc. Also, we have have a great
respect for prog bands that we grew up listening to. Like Genesis, Yes, and Journey. These
band pioneer the use of organs, atmospheric pad and synthesizers. We feel that it creates a
more unique sound for us, and certainly helps identify us from our metal-core peers.
S: And do you think one guitar is enough to play your kind of music live? Did you
never think about finding a second guitarist?

Shane: Yes, I do. Our guitarist Sam, has a wonderful ear for a full sounding live guitar tone.
We have had 2nd guitarists early on in our band’s career. It always felt as if there wasn’t
enough breathing room for all the elements that we pack into our songs. Much thought goes
into how we layer our music.This also allows for the spotlight to be shared between us all
more equally than if we had a 2nd guitarist.
S: According to you, this record's lyrics deal with coming to terms with one's own
demons. Were they some demons you personaly needed to kick out? How did you
choose these lyrical themes? Was your past as dark as you're depicting it in your
lyrics?
Shane: Our singer is very candid and honest about the lyical content that he conveys. He had
an overall concept for the lyrics as we were writing the album. I can’t speak for him
personally, but I do know that he is adamant that anything he writes comes straight from his
heart and personal experiences.
S: I've heard that the first single you chose for this record is Song For The Hopeless.
Will you shoot some video to illustrate this single? Do you already have some ideas to
illustrate ATS's graphical universe?
Shane: We would love to shoot a video. We are a very visually-oriented band, as you may
tell from the album artwork. No plans for a video as of yet though.

S: In March and April, you will be once again touring over the United States to
promote this first record. But do you plan to come to Europe and in our country
of Belgium as well? Did you already come here, and if yes, what do you think about
our crowd?
Shane: We would love nothing more, but I imagine it all depends on how well the record is
received. The investment to send a band to Europe is somewhat substantial, so doing so for
a debut album tour is not too likely. As I said before, we love so many European band, it
would truly be an honor to share the stage with any of our aforementioned European heros!
S: If you could choose only one band to tour with, which one would it be, and why? Is
there a band or artist your dream to meet and play with?
Shane: Wow, that’s a tough one. I personally love Opeth very much.
S: Traditional question on Rock'N'Balls: what would be your TOP 3 best albums ever
and why?

Shane: Another tough one. I listen to so much music and so many styles. I choose 3 of my
favorite metal albums:
1) Tool-Aenema- They’re artistic, technically-minded, and stunning visuals. It appeals to
both sides of my brain.
2) Pantera-Far Beyond Driven-This album got me into true heavy metal. I had the cassette
tape and played it until it ripped in my stereo deck.
3) Opeth-Blackwater Park. They get me into the death metal side of things. Such dynamic
music. Amazing clean vocals and death growls, tasteful guitar solos, beautiful
piano/acoustic guitar passages. The real deal.
S: So thanx a lot, Shane, for this interview! Do you have a last word for your fans and
our readers?
Shane: Thank you so much for helping spread word about us to the European crowd. We
hope to make it over the pond very soon and meet you all in person.
