FIA ERC 2015 : La Peugeot Rally Academy mal récompensée....

Alors qu’ils prenaient le départ avec de grandes ambitions, les deux
équipages de la Peugeot Rally Academy ont vécu un week-end difficile en
Estonie. Proches du podium, Craig Breen et Scott Martin étaient contraints
à l’abandon pendant que Diogo Gago et Jorge Carvalho terminaient à la
septième place d’un classement Junior remporté par une Peugeot 208 R2.
Au départ, ni Craig Breen (Peugeot 208T16, une participation en 2011), ni
Diogo Gago (Peugeot 208R2) ne connaissaient réellement cette épreuve si
particulière. Disputé sur des pistes larges et rapides, le Rallye d’Estonie
nécessite une connaissance parfaite du terrain. Pour compenser ce déficit
d’expérience, l’équipe de la Peugeot Rally Academy organisait une séance
d’essai avant le début des reconnaissances. C’est donc plus sereins que Craig
Breen et Diogo Gago prenaient le départ !
Cinquième de la spéciale de qualifications, Craig Breen et Scott Martin
choisissaient de partir en 12ème position pour profiter d’une piste balayée.
Malheureusement, dès l’ES1, la 208T16 flanquée du n°1 laissait échapper de
nombreuses secondes suite à un freinage manqué.
Alors seizièmes au général, Craig et Scott parvenaient à remonter au
cinquième rang au terme de la première étape en dépit d’un manque
d’expérience et d’un terrain favorable aux machines plus puissantes en Vmax !
Le pilote Irlandais se fixait alors comme objectif la troisième marche du
podium, synonyme de gros points au Championnat.
Le lendemain, sur des routes assouplies par les pluies nocturnes, Craig Breen
partait le couteau entre les dents et se rapprochait de la dernière marche du
podium. 3 secondes, c’est l’écart qui séparait alors la 208T16 de cette position
convoitée. Alors qu’il ne restait que deux spéciales à disputer, Craig et Scott
devaient renoncer suite à un problème de pression d’huile.
Au final, c’est Timmu Korge qui emmenait la première 208T16 au classement
général. L’Estonien, soutenu par Peugeot Baltic, terminait à une honorable
cinquième place finale pour sa première course avec la voiture.
Aux commandes de leur 208 R2, Diogo Gogo et Jorge Carvalho évoluaient
eux aussi pour la première fois sur ces routes rapides. L’équipage portugais de
la Peugeot Rally Academy réalisait alors une course sage pour terminer au
septième rang tout en améliorant le comportement de sa monture au fil des
kilomètres. Ainsi, Diogo était satisfait d’avoir pu engranger de l’expérience sur
ce terrain si spécifique. Sur une autre 208 R2, le Letton Ralfs Sirtakis
remportait la catégorie Junior.
Même si la déception était grande au moment de quitter l’Estonie, Craig
Breen et Scott Martin regardaient déjà vers la République-Tchèque où se
disputera le Barum Czech Rally Zlìn à la fin du mois d’Août. Leaders du
Championnat jusqu’ici, ils aborderont la prochaine manche de l’ERC avec 5
points de retard sur Kajetan Kajetanowicz. A cette occasion ils pourront
compter sur Charles Martin, vainqueur de la 208 Rally Cup 2014, de retour
dans les rangs de la Peugeot Rally Academy au volant d’une 208T16. Pour la
dernière course de son programme, Diogo Gago tentera d’accrocher une
place d’honneur en FIA ERC Junior.
Ils ont dit : Craig Breen : « Globalement, je suis déçu. C’est un deuxième abandon
consécutif et pour le Championnat, c’est une mauvaise opération. Il faut
rester positif car il reste de nombreuses courses et il faudra se battre pour
remporter le titre. C’est dommage car avec toute l’équipe de la Peugeot Rally
Academy, nous avions bien préparé cette épreuve. C’est seulement la
deuxième fois que je roulais ici et ce n’était pas facile face aux nombreux
pilotes qui ont une maîtrise parfaite sur ce type de spéciale. C’est d’autant
plus énervant que nous avions réussi à améliorer nos temps au fil des
passages, preuve du bon travail réalisé par l’équipe jusque- là. »
Diogo Gago : « J’avais clairement un déficit d’expérience sur cette épreuve.
C’était très rapide et il fallait d’excellentes notes pour rouler sur un bon
rythme en toute confiance. Mes adversaires étaient très rapides et je n’étais
pas dans le coup. Nous avons profité de ce rallye pour tester plusieurs types
de réglages et sur la fin j’étais plus à l’aise et donc plus rapide. Même si la
performance n’était pas au rendez-vous, j’ai pu emmagasiner de l’expérience
pour la suite de ma carrière. »

Despite their high hopes of a top result in Estonia, both Peugeot Rally
Academy crews had difficult runs during round six of the 2015 FIA ERC.
Craig Breen and Scott Martin were stopped in their tracks just as they
appeared to be heading for a podium finish, while Diogo Gago and Jorge
Carvalho came seventh in the Junior battle which was won by a Peugeot
208 R2 driver.
The specific, high-speed auto24 Rally Estonia – an event which calls for
sound knowledge of the stages – was essentially unknown territory for Craig
Breen (Peugeot 208T16) and Diogo Gago (Peugeot 208R2). To compensate,
the Peugeot Rally Academy organised a test prior to the start of recce which
buoyed the two drivers ahead of Thursday evening’s start.
Craig Breen and Scott Martin were fifth fastest on the Qualifying Stage and
chose to run 12th on the road in order to benefit from cleaner conditions.
Unfortunately, the driver of N°1 208T16 lost a little ground after a braking
error on SS1.
The incident relegated him to 16th overall, but he fought back to fifth place by
the end of Leg 1, despite his limited stage knowledge and top speed handicap
compared with certain cars.
The Irishman started Saturday’s action with his sights set firmly on a topthree finish in a bid to pocket big championship points. The last day’s
conditions were softer after overnight rain and Craig Breen hit the ground
running to close to within three seconds of the podium. With two stages
remaining, however, he was eliminated by an oil pressure problem.
The best 208T16 finisher was consequently Peugeot Baltic-backed Timmu
Korge who celebrated his first outing in the car with fifth place.
Diogo Gogo and Jorge Carvalho were contesting the Estonian event for the
first time in their 208 R2 and the Portuguese pair’s carefully-paced run
enabled them to pick up seventh place after they had used the weekend to
fine-tune the handling of their car. Diogo was also pleased with the valuable
experience he gained of the rally’s highly specific stages. The Junior battle
was won by the Latvian 208 R2 driver Ralfs Sirtakis.
Putting the weekend’s disappointment behind them, Craig Breen and Scott
Martin are already looking ahead to late-August’s Barum Czech Rally Zlìn.
After starting the 2015 FIA ERC’s sixth round at the top of the provisional
standings, they will travel to the Czech Republic with a five-point deficit to
Kajetan Kajetanowicz. Their determination to bridge that gap will be aided by
the return to the Peugeot Rally Academy line-up of the 2014 208 Rally Cup
winner Charles Martin behind the wheel of a 208T16. Diogo Gago will be
aiming for a top result to conclude his FIA ERC Junior programme.
Driver quotes: Craig Breen: “It was my second retirement in a row and that’s not good for
the championship. I’m obviously disappointed but it’s important to stay
positive and there are still several events where we will be able to continue
our challenge for the title. It’s a shame because we had prepared thoroughly
for this event along with everyone at the Peugeot Rally Academy. It’s not an
easy rally because you’re up against drivers who have a good understanding
of this type of stage. It was especially frustrating because we managed to
improve our times as the weekend progressed, and that’s a sign of the good
work the team has achieved so far.”
Diogo Gago: “I clearly didn’t have enough experience of this event. The
stages were very fast and excellent pace notes are necessary if you want to
have the confidence. My rivals were very quick and I wasn’t competitive, but
we used the rally to try a variety of set-ups. I felt much more comfortable
towards the end. The event also enabled me to gain good experience which
will be useful for the future.”

FIA ERC / PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY : Renouer avec la victoire.
Victorieuse sur 3 des 5 manches disputées jusqu’ici et dominatrice sur tous
les types de terrain, la 208T16 est au départ du Rallye d’Estonie. Emmenée par Craig Breen, le leader du classement provisoire, et Diogo Gago en
208 R2, toute l’équipe de la Peugeot Rally Academy est motivée comme
jamais afin de retrouver le chemin du succès.
Le rallye d’Estonie, sixième manche du calendrier FIA ERC 2015 se caractérise
par des spéciales rapides à souhait ! C’est sur ce terrain que Craig Breen et
Scott Martin comptent bien retrouver le chemin du succès après un Rallye
d’Ypres au goût amer. Très rapides sur les routes belges, Craig et Scott devaient rendre leur carnet suite à une excursion dans un champ ! C’est dans un
état d’esprit revanchard et motivé que le pilote Irlandais aborde ce prochain
rendez-vous : « Après le Rallye d’Ypres qui fût décevant, je me réjouis d’aller
en Estonie ! Ce sera ma deuxième participation là-bas car j’avais déjà roulé en
2011 avec mon ami Gareth Roberts qui me manque beaucoup. Les routes sont
incroyables, très rapides avec beaucoup de ‘ciels’ et de nombreux sauts qui
procurent un plaisir énorme ! Une fois de plus, la concurrence sera rude avec
de nombreux pilotes locaux, mais Scott et moi ainsi que toute l’équipe de la
Peugeot Rally Academy sommes extrêmement motivés ! Nous avons de
l’avance au Championnat et il faut continuer sur cette lancée, nous ferons de
notre mieux ! »
Trois autres 208T16 seront au départ avec le concours des filiales Peugeot.
Ainsi Timmu Korge, 3ème l’an passé sur ce rallye, bénéficiera du soutien de
‘Peugeot Baltic’ pour aligner une 208T16. Déjà victorieux à deux reprises cette
année dans le Championnat Finlandais avec la 208T16, Juha Salo, soutenu
par Peugeot Finlande, tentera d’accrocher un beau résultat sur des routes
auxquelles il est habitué. Enfin, le Suédois Bjorn Adolfsson alignera (hors ERC)
la 208T16 avec laquelle il a glané deux succès en Suède cette saison.
Plus que 2 en junior
Comme son chef de file Craig Breen, Diogo Gago, a de grandes ambitions au
moment de retrouver sa surface de prédilection. Auteur d’une course remar-
quée à Ypres, il était deuxième pour sa première participation, avant de sortir
de la route, le vainqueur ‘Junior’ de la 208 Rally Cup 2014 espère bien figurer
en Estonie : « Une nouvelle fois je vais découvrir un nouveau rallye cette saison ! L’Estonie est un rallye très typique avec des spéciales rapides. En Lettonie, nous avions trouvé le même type de route mais cette fois ci, il n’y aura
pas de neige. L’objectif sur cette épreuve est le même que sur tous les autres
rallyes que je découvre, à savoir un top 5 en FIA ERC Junior. Cette fois ci, il
faudra être au bout car il n’y a que le résultat qui compte. Il y aura beaucoup
de pilotes nordiques au départ mais j’ai déjà montré que je savais emmener
ma 208 R2 sur le podium comme ce fût le cas aux Açores. Avec toute l’équipe
de la Peugeot Rally Academy nous avons à coeur de réaliser une belle performance ! »
A noter la présence de dix 208 R2 sur les 14 voitures inscrites au départ en FIA
ERC Junior avec notamment Chris Ingram, pilote Peugeot UK qui est actuellement deuxième du Championnat.

FIA ERC / PEUGEOT RALLY ACADEMY: Looking to return to the victory
trail
With three assertive victories on different surface types to its name from
the five ERC rounds contested so far, the 208T16 continues its European
campaign with this weekend’s Auto 24 Rally Estonia. Led by the championship’s provisional leader Craig Breen, and with Diogo Gago also out in
his 208 R2, the Peugeot Rally Academy is targeting a return to its winning
ways.
The Rally Estonia, round six of the 2015 FIA ERC, is reputed for its exceptionally fast stages and Craig Breen and Scott Martin will be looking to resume their
sequence of successes after the bitter blow they took last month in Ypres.
Despite their speed on the Belgian lanes, Craig and Scott were side-lined by
an excursion into a field and, unsurprisingly, the Irishman will be out to make
amends in Estonia: “Ypres was a huge disappointment. I just want to put it
behind me and focus on Estonia. This is my second time on this event because I came here in 2011 with my friend Gareth Roberts who I miss so much.
The stages are incredible. They are very fast, with lots of blind crests and
plenty of jumps which are great fun. Once again, we will face some pretty stiff
opposition with all the strong local drivers, but Scott and I are extremely fired
up, as is everyone at the Peugeot Rally Academy. We’ve pulled out a bit of a
cushion at the top of the championship standings and we need to keep the
momentum going. We’ll give it our very best shot.”
The entry list includes three other 208T16s, backed by Peugeot subsidiaries.
Timmu Korge, who came third on this event in 2014, has support from Peugeot Baltic, while Peugeot Finland-backed Juha Salo, who has already won
two rounds of his national championship, is targeting a strong result on
stages that are not dissimilar to those to which he is accustomed back home.
The third 208T16 driver – although not registered for the ERC – is Sweden’s
Bjorn Adolfsson who has already steered his car to two victories in his own
country this season.
Just two Junior clashes remaining
Like his team-leader Craig Breen, Diogo Gago has his sights set high for his
return to gravel, his favourite type of surface. After marking his first visit to
Ypres by appearing as high as second in class before an ‘off’, the 2014 208
Rally Cup Junior winner is eager to secure a top finish in Estonia: “It’s another
new event for me and its stages are very fast. They are like what we saw in
Latvia, but without the snow! Our objective is the same as it always is on
events that are new to me, and that is to finish in the top five of the FIA ERC
Junior standings. This time we will need to reach the finish because that’s the
only way to score points. There will be quite a few Scandinavian drivers but I
showed in the Azores that I can finish on the podium in the 208 R2. Along
with everyone at the Peugeot Rally Academy, we will be out to produce a top
performance.”
Of the 14 cars entered in the FIA ERC Junior class, 10 are 208 R2s, including
the Peugeot-UK-backed entry of Chris Ingram who is second in the provisional
standings.
