This service represents three major areas of specialized programming. 1. Treatment The focus of the treatment component is to improve functional and behavioural abilities of the participant. 2.Leisure Education Emphasis on participant developing and acquiring leisure knowledge, skills and attitudes. 3.Recreation participation Structured group recreation experiences. Social/Recreation Programs Programs are offered throughout various community centres giving children, youth and adults with special needs, the opportunity to participate in year round programs that provide recreation and social programming. The social/recreation programs take place throughout the city during the day, evening and weekends. The programs include a wide range of options: community outings, social clubs, fitness, aquatics, summer camps for children, youth and adults, health and wellness and other leisure activities. The City of Ottawa, with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion – is offering a Shared Care After School Program to Children and Youth with Special Needs. The After School Program will be offered across the city and will maintain a 1:3 ratio. This project promotes physical fitness, healthy eating and nutrition. If you would like more information please contact the After School Diane Cyr, Portfolio Coordinator East District at 613-580-2424 ext. 29300. Tactile Signage and Wayfinding Maps Program The City of Ottawa initiated the Tactile Signage Program and introduced the first tactile wayfinding map at the Walter Baker Sports Centre in an ongoing effort to remove barriers and increase access to City facilities. The City is phasing in the use of standardized, high-contrast Tactile signs in all City of Ottawa public facilities to help visitors find what they are looking for. The strategic placement and design of these signs is guided by Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard B651-04 (Accessible Design for the Built Environment) and the City of Ottawa’s Visual Identity Standards. Tactile maps are designed for people with visual impairments; however the map is easy and beneficial for everyone. The wayfinding map is similar to “You are here” display at shopping centre but is placed lower to the floor and is mounted on a podium to facilitate access to everyone. Your feedback is encouraged at the Walter Baker Sports Centre customer service desk, or by emailing [email protected].
