John Poetker is Counsel in our Calgary office practising in the Securities/Capital
Markets and Corporate/Commercial areas. John focuses his practice on assisting
clients, both public and private, in a variety of sectors with respect to corporate and
securities law matters, corporate governance, stock exchange and continuous
disclosure matters and transactional matters in the oil & gas sector both domestically
and internationally.

John’s current practice evolved from a previous broader and general practice that
included litigation and labour relations matters. Prior to becoming a lawyer, John was a
member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for 13 years, until April 1981. His
experience in the force consisted of general detachment work in Saskatchewan,
administrative responsibilities in the commercial crime branch in Ottawa, and
commercial crime investigation in Alberta. This background contributes to the practical,
common-sense approach he brings to legal matters.
REPRESENTATIVE WORK

Advising both multinational and small business in corporate and
commercial matters and in the negotiation of and drafting of related
agreements.

Transactional matters involving both oil & gas and oil & gas service
companies in their domestic and international operations.

Co-advising and acting on behalf of major contractors with respect to
public private partnership construction contracts and initiatives.

Acquisition and disposition of oil & gas interests.

Mergers and acquisitions of public and private companies.

Acting as counsel to publicly traded and private companies and providing
day-to-day advice on a broad range of corporate matters.

Acquisition and disposition of businesses.

Reorganization of corporate groups, including creating and restructuring
corporations, partnerships and limited partnerships within the group.
