Academics
Why Strasbourg?
- French language and culture courses at the
Institut International d’Études Françaises,(IIEF)
- A perfect city for learning
French.
Strasbourg favors a full
linguistic
immersion
experience.
With an urban population of just
400,000,
of
which
10%
are
university students, it has an
intimate feel.
- A full range of humanities and social science
courses taught in French at the Université de
Strasbourg
- Political science, international relations and
economics at the Institut d’Études Politiques
- Two elective courses just for Accès students: Les
valeurs républicaines en France, the development of French republican values and their use
and misuse today;
Laïcité, sécularisation et
religion en France, exploration of the dramatic
changes in the French religious landscape since
1789.
- For advanced students, part-time internships at
associations, NGOs and government agencies with 4
credit individual research project.
Students take a minimum of 15 credits per
semester. More advanced students enroll in 3 or
more credits outside the IIEF. ACCÈS provides an
academic transcript to the student’s US college at
the end of the semester.
- A historical and cultural gem.
The Grand’Ile island in the center of
town is a UNESCO world heritage
site containing the tallest cathedral
in France, nine museums, and the
16th century Petite France quarter.
Most of the center is reserved for
pedestrians and bicyclists.
-A
cosmopolitan
European
capital.
Located on the French
border with Germany, Strasbourg
has been a crossroads of people and
ideas for centuries. It was home to
Gutenberg, Goethe, Pasteur, Marc
Bloch and Jean Calvin. Today, it is
the seat of the European Court of
Human Rights, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe. The
Université de Strasbourg is the
largest in France, attracting students
from all over Europe. It’s also just
2 ½ hours by train from Paris.

interest in and around Strasbourg. These

- Haut Koenigsbourg castle
- The 14th century hospices wine cellar
- Art nouveau in Nancy

Cultural immersion, on-site support
The ACCÈS program is designed for students who want to
improve their French language skills through a cultural
immersion experience. Students live with host families
or in boarding houses with French students. All classes
are taught in French. ACCÈS stresses daily use of French
language, even with other foreign students. Part-time
internships are available for advanced students.
At the same time, our resident staff provides the
academic guidance and personal support students need.
We are intentional about getting students involved in
French culture. In addition to an academic transcript,
ACCÈS provides a relevé d’intégration culturelle for each
student. This is a record and evaluation of pre-approved
cultural activities involving student participation and use
of French language. The director helps each student
identify and get involved in such activities throughout
the semester.
ACCÈS organizes 3-5 stages per semester where students
learn French through practical experience.
These
include:
- French cooking
- First aid certification at the Croix Rouge
- Sailing
- Grape harvesting and wine tasting class
- Alsatian folk dancing
