a French immersion study abroad program for American students in Strasbourg, France Academics Why Strasbourg? - French language and culture courses at the Institut International d’Études Françaises,(IIEF) - A perfect city for learning French. Strasbourg favors a full linguistic immersion experience. With an urban population of just 400,000, of which 10% are university students, it has an intimate feel. - A full range of humanities and social science courses taught in French at the Université de Strasbourg - Political science, international relations and economics at the Institut d’Études Politiques - Two elective courses just for Accès students: Les valeurs républicaines en France, the development of French republican values and their use and misuse today; Laïcité, sécularisation et religion en France, exploration of the dramatic changes in the French religious landscape since 1789. - For advanced students, part-time internships at associations, NGOs and government agencies with 4 credit individual research project. Students take a minimum of 15 credits per semester. More advanced students enroll in 3 or more credits outside the IIEF. ACCÈS provides an academic transcript to the student’s US college at the end of the semester. - A historical and cultural gem. The Grand’Ile island in the center of town is a UNESCO world heritage site containing the tallest cathedral in France, nine museums, and the 16th century Petite France quarter. Most of the center is reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists. -A cosmopolitan European capital. Located on the French border with Germany, Strasbourg has been a crossroads of people and ideas for centuries. It was home to Gutenberg, Goethe, Pasteur, Marc Bloch and Jean Calvin. Today, it is the seat of the European Court of Human Rights, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe. The Université de Strasbourg is the largest in France, attracting students from all over Europe. It’s also just 2 ½ hours by train from Paris. These have included: - the World War I battlefields of Verdun - Haut Koenigsbourg castle - The 14th century hospices wine cellar - Art nouveau in Nancy - the monastery of Sainte Odile - the musée de l’automobile in Mulhouse - theater performance at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg - Carnival in Black Forest town of Gengenbach - Session of the European Parliament Cultural immersion, on-site support The ACCÈS program is designed for students who want to improve their French language skills through a cultural immersion experience. Students live with host families or in boarding houses with French students. All classes are taught in French. ACCÈS stresses daily use of French language, even with other foreign students. Part-time internships are available for advanced students. At the same time, our resident staff provides the academic guidance and personal support students need. We are intentional about getting students involved in French culture. In addition to an academic transcript, ACCÈS provides a relevé d’intégration culturelle for each student. This is a record and evaluation of pre-approved cultural activities involving student participation and use of French language. The director helps each student identify and get involved in such activities throughout the semester. ACCÈS organizes 3-5 stages per semester where students learn French through practical experience. Fee does not include: international airfare, personal travel, books, cell phone use, and laundry expenses. The Director Originally from Pennsylvania, Alex Neff has lived in France and directed a study abroad program for American students for over 10 years. In 2012, he will complete a Ph.D. in sociology at the Université de Strasbourg. He also has degrees from the George Washington University, the Université Robert Schuman and Messiah College. Alex lives in Strasbourg with his wife and four sons.
