We were appointed editors of the journal by the CIESC executive last year, and this is the first issue produced under our joint editorship. Marianne A. Larsen, Western University, is the Editor in Chief, and Paul R. Carr, Lakehead University, and Gina Thésée, Université du Québec à Montréal, are the Associate editors. We have a number of people to thank. First we begin with a hearty thank-you to Suzanne Majhanovich for her fine work as editor of the journal since 2005. She has been a tremendous help with the transition phase over the past year, and we wish her the very best as she enjoys her retirement. We would also like to thank our previous editorial board members: Vandra Masemann, Peter Fan, and Deo Poonwassie, who have served the journal so well for many years as editorial board members. We have a new editorial board, which is comprised of Kathy Bickmore, Wendy Bokhurst-Heng, Michael Cottrell, Yvette Daniel, Mark Evans, Lucy Karanja, Xuemei Li, Linyuan Guo, Shibao Guo, Suzanne Majhanovich, Lorna McLean, Donatille Mujawamariya, Dalene Swanson, and George Zhou. Thanks to all of those individuals who have agreed to serve in this position. There are a number of exciting developments for our journal. The first is that we now have a new website where you can find past issues of our journal dating back to 2005. The website link is http://ir.lib.uwo.ca/cie-eci/. Authors are now able to submit their manuscripts through the online journal website, and we have a much better, streamlined process for manuscript reviews. On that note, we have a much bigger pool of reviewers to call upon, and thank all of those who have kindly agreed to review manuscripts through our new system, which ensures a fair and rigorous peer-review process. Le groupe de réviseurs a également augmenté et nous aimerions de ce fait également remercier tous ceux qui ont bien voulu réviser les articles de cette édition avec le Education canadienne et internationale Vol. 41 no 1 - juin 2012 iii are also in the process of having our journal indexed by Proquest Canada, which along with the online accessibility, will allow for much greater dissemination of articles in our journal. The most important piece of news to pass onto subscribers is the decision, which was endorsed unanimously at the Annual General Meeting of the CIESC on May 29th, 2012, to discontinue print copies of the journal. We will honour our subscribers with 2 print issues for 2012 (volume 41, issues 1 and 2), but after that our journal will be completely online. Only subscribers will have access to issues in the most current volume, so there are still good reasons to subscribe to our journal. The CIESC executive and CIE editorial board could see that the costs of printing and mailing out the journal are now prohibitive, and the corresponding need to increase the visibility of our journal and disseminate our author’s work more widely by going online. In this issue, we have articles by new and more established scholars in the field. The first article International Volunteers’ Serving as Teachers in Rural Indigenous Schools in Ecuador: Challenges and Opportunities for Culturally Relevant Teaching, by Julia Rao and Sarfaroz Niyozov from OISE/University of Toronto, is based on the results of an ethnographic study about international volunteers serving as teachers in rural indigenous schools in Ecuador. The authors situate their work within the complexities and dilemmas of international aid education, the volunteer sector and cross-cultural learning and teaching, and demonstrate the implications that international aid education may have in international, cross-cultural contexts. The next three articles are also concerned with education in cross-cultural contexts. These interpretive studies all address various aspects of the experiences of Chinese students, parents and scholars in navigating educational realms in Canadian contexts. In A Model for a Sustainable Partnership: Connecting Chinese nouveau système. Les trois articles suivants iv Canadian and International Education Vol. 41 no. 1 - June 2012 abordent Visiting Scholars, the University and the Community, Marilyn Miller and Dongyan Blachford from the University of Regina explore the impact of Chinese visiting scholars’ social interaction both on and off-campus, and develop a new model for sustainable partnerships between universities, local communities and international visiting scholars. The next two articles focus on the experiences of Chinese students and parents in Canadian secondary schools. In Finding Hope in the Darkness: Stories of Two Chinese Newcomers Enrolled in a Canadian High School, Yi Li (University of Manitoba) and Denise Larsen (University of Alberta) draw upon conceptual theories of hope to understand the experiences of two Chinese newcomers in Canadian high schools. Their findings demonstrate the importance of recognizing that hope is a process that has important implications within educational contexts. A group of scholars from the University of Windsor collaborated on a study about the experiences of relatively new Chinese immigrant parents in terms of their communication with the schools that their children attended. Their article, Chinese Immigrant Parents’ Communication with School Teachers, challenges commonly held assumptions about immigrant parents’ involvement with their children’s school, and suggests additional ways that schools may better engage immigrant parents. The final article in this issue is by Ararat Ospian, Vanderbilt University. In Who is Guilty and What to Do? Popular Opinion and Public Discourse of Corruption in Russian Higher Education, the author explores the problem of corruption in higher education in Russia. He turns his attention to the discourse of corruption as perpetuated by the mass media as well as the consequences of this discourse including the implementation of a country-wide, university admissions standardized test. Although there are not any articles in également l’éducation dans des contexts interculturels. Education canadienne et internationale Vol. 41 no 1 - juin 2012 v French for this issue, we would encourage scholars, researchers, graduate students and others in the field to consider submitting their manuscripts in French for future issues. The interplay between English-language and French-language texts is an important component of the work of the CIESC, and we believe that as a Canadian academic society this bilingual component will have a very positive impact on our work in comparative and international education. The two books reviewed in this issue are written by and/or include contributions by members of the Comparative and International Education Society of Canada. There are so many excellent publications by our members that we would like to highlight their work in our journal. Do take time to read the review of Doing Democracy: Striving for Political Literacy and Society Justice, by Darren Lund and Paul Carr; and Postcolonial Perspectives on Global Citizenship Education, edited by Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti and Lynn T. M. de Souza, which includes chapters by many of our members.
