Antidote 7 PRESS RELEASE Exhibition, from 6 October 2011 to 7 January 2012 at the Galerie des Galeries Show opening, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 For this seventh installment of the Antidote exhibition series at the Galerie des Galeries, Guillaume Houzé wanted to highlight the graphic artist Jean-Marc Ballée and the work he did for the catalog of Ginette Moulin and Guillaume Houzé’s collection. The catalog is especially original in its composition and makeup thanks to the inclusion of twelve pages of black-and-white drawings by Ballée that were inspired by the world of Comic books. Dipping into Ginette Moulin and Mr. Houzé’s collection of contemporary art, Ballée selected a group of works that he looked at from a purely formal point of view in order to lend them new life as characters, monsters, even landscapes through the prism of his drawing. Mr. Houzé was quite taken by Ballée’s joining of these works, which were suddenly infused with new energy thanks to their insertion in two different story lines, and he invited the graphic artist to serve as a co-curator of an exhibition that would imagine a coming together of pieces from his collection and drawings by Ballée. Dans l’espace de la galerie, des îlots réunissant plusieurs pièces se formeront, In the gallery space, small concentrations of works will take shape, encouraging a range of faisant ainsi dialoguer les œuvres entre cross-references between pieces by artists like elles, comme celles de Michel Blazy, Ugo Rondinone et Pierre-Olivier Arnaud. The graphic artist Jean-Marc Ballée is especially interested in questions of fiction and narrative. His career to date has taken him to various creative fields, from contemporary art (with Adel Abdessemed, Fabrice Hyber and Sophie Ristelhueber), to design ( Petite histoire de la capsule d’habitation en images, with Alexandra Midal), to architecture (with Rem Koolhaas and Dominique Perrault). Mr. Ballée is currently preparing a cinema adaptation of Graham Masterton’s novel Ritual (1988), which he is shooting as a short film in woods near Philadelphia. Si le Laurent (2005) ADVENTURES by jean-marc Ballée text : ANTOINE MARCHAND In 1946 Salvador Dali and the Disney studios joined forces to create Destino, an animated fantasy that unfortunately was never completed because of budgetary concerns. In 1961 Roy Lichtenstein created Look Mickey, the first of a long series of paintings that were notably inspired by American Comic books. In 1999 Mike Kelley began his ambitious project entitled Kandors, which takes shape around Superman’s native city. This prestigious line of creative animation and comics-inspired art is now joined by Antidote 7, the brainchild of Jean-Marc Ballée and the latest installment of the Antidote exhibition series. Ballée has reappropriated various works in Ginette Moulin and Guillaume Houzé’s collection to offer us a thoroughly off-the-wall reading of the pieces, one that looks more to Marvel and DC Comics in this case than to the wonderful world of Mickey. To carry out his project, Ballée sought inspiration in a 1967 issue of Tales of Suspense, a review that deals exclusively with Captain America and Iron Man. Reproducing almost identically the sequence of images of the two adventures recounted in The Deadly Victory! and To Be Reborn!, Ballée has literally storyboarded the artworks in question, replacing the original characters and landscapes with them. Transposed in this way, they assume an entirely new dimension, suddenly becoming the protagonists of a story that has already been written. Impossible to know if this connection has been approved by the “Comics Code Authority,” but we must admit that bringing the two worlds face to face works completely, transforming the Marvel Comics writers into exhibition curators by procuration. The exhibition features the “perverted” poster-size plates borrowed from the two comic books along with a selection of manipulated works. While Xavier Veilhan’s aluminum-andsteel Laurent (2005), reminiscent of Steel from DC Comics, and Michel Blazy’s Patman (2006) quite logically lend themselves to Ballée’s exercise, integrating some of the works proved a real challenge. Indeed it is fairly difficult in the end to imagine a Clément Rodzielski print or a Walead Beshty FedEx in the world of Captain America and other Superman types. By imbuing these with life in the most singular manner there is, Jean-Marc Ballée manages to devise a crossover between Comics and contemporary art that is indeed as unexpected as it is successful, a Gesamtkunstwerk that would seem to have spent more time around Stan Lee and Jack Kirby than Richard Wagner. The works brought together here thus reveal a hidden part of their identity, recalling in this regard the X-Men, who are forever in search of their true nature. With Claude Lévêque’s Rise of the Poisoned Youth (2009) raised high up like a banner, they proudly dominate the wall before us, like an army of masked avengers spoiling for a fight. Antoine Marchand is an art critic and a freelance curator based in Reims. He is also in charge of exhibitions and publications at FRAC ChampagneArdenne. He is a regular contributor to the review 02. With his work in art Pierre Ardouvin is patiently building up a poetry of banality. All of his installations and drawings take society as a motif and are tinged with both a good-natured nostalgia and an unmistakable pessimism. The disillusion of daily life is suggested through arrangements of simple objects and the biting connections the French artist draws between them. Behind the pop music Ardouvin likes to employ, we feel our weariness of spectacles and the spectacular beginning to surface. Seeking the moment, in his words, “when the gaze becomes double,” Pierre-Olivier Arnaud uses photographic images as an art material. He gathers them during his walks in cities to create groups of shots according to themes. Arnaud reworks their texture in a way that partially dissolves the subject, that is, he imposes on them a shift to black and white, treats them in grisaille, then elaborates plays of overlaid and rephotographed images. Stripped of their aura, they are stuck to the wall like banal posters or scattered over the floor of his exhibitions. The classic subjects are jostling and falling all over one another in Whitney Bedford’s painting. Battles and landscapes grab most of the attention, but a predilection for disasters also persists. Most of her paintings indeed represent shipwrecks, which the artist evokes as a metaphor for American soldiers’ departure for Iraq. Her work swings between images of destruction and redemption, and the young artist likes to speak of her art as an output of votive offerings, allegories of chaos and crisis that are nevertheless pertinent in today’s world. Sculpture or photography, Walead Beshty’s pieces often display the same motifs. While utterly different for each work of art, the roduction process involves either a diffraction of the image or object, or a fragmentation of their surface. Whether the piece is posited on the exposure of light-sensitive paper or, in the case of his sculptures, the trip they make via FedEx, Beshty is engaged in a reflection on time, which his works carry over to the public. To live and let rot could be Michel Blazy’s leitmotiv. In his art we see at work a real benevolence towards the life force running through all things, from the most natural, such as insects, to the most industrial, like packaged Asian noodles or instant mashed potatoes. He injects this “vitality” into the very core of exhibition venues—normally neutralized by their white paint— to create joyous reminders of our mortality, soliciting our childlike curiosity as much as our awareness of what is to come. Katinka Bock’s work is shaped around her constant search for balance or a tenuous stability that proves easily destroyed. Through the use of elemental or mineral materials like water, glass, unbaked clay and stone, or the vegetable matter from which wood and paper are derived, the artist produces delicate artifacts that seem to gather within themselves the energy of the venue. Her works are spare; they pick up the tensions of the existing space, whether it is pictorial and bound within a frame, or architectural and, in that sense, infused with history. He had musicians play music for the plants during his first show, likes to lend concrete form to shadow puppets in almost two-dimensional sculptures, and has tried to reproduce in neon light the development that goes on when an idea takes shape in the mind. Coffin’s interest in science and its more or less serious spin-offs is on display in works that assume many shapes, though all share a genuine poetry. It might be said of the work of this British artist in his forties, an activist and anti-authority type who is well versed in popular culture, that he is attempting to revolutionize something in the world of art. Indeed, photographs or posters, his pieces underscore the collaborative form that art can take by bringing to light, for example, the “workers” in the shadows that fans can appear to be to rock stars, or the creators of banners to protest marchers. This raises the question of the creator and that of the omnipotence of the artist who has been officially accepted by the system through creations that are often immaterial and of temporary duration. Sound and light are the two major ingredients of Claude Lévêque’s recipe for generating powerful emotional experiences in the viewer. Standing before a piece by Lévêque, the viewer is always in the presence of a show, a spectacle. Often done on site, his pieces draw from our collective unconscious and its wealth of popular imagery a force that conjures up our personal and shared history, the history of a generation that has seen its dreams sink into the triviality of the real world. - Claude Lévêque Rise of the poisoned youth, 2009 Neon blanc — White neon light — 180 x 21 x 0,6 cm Collection Ginette Moulin / Guillaume Houzé, Paris Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris © ADAGP Claude Levêque. What you see is not what it is: views on politics and poetics. George-Henry Longly’s pieces slip into the exhibition venue under the appearance of odd geometric shapes. In fact they are a reaction to such architectural constants as corners, columns, ceiling lights, etc., with a deadpan humor that takes off in this British artist’s titles and the performative note they sound: What you see is not what it is: views on politics and poetics. Shifting between plays of light and plays on words, these simple assemblages of concrete, wood and glass display a healthy relativism. Against a background of pictorial abstraction, Marlène Mocquet’s brief sketches give free rein to candid epics that witness colorful monsters becoming crossed with little wide-eyed girls, and multicolored birds fusing with gaping fish. Yet at the very heart of this world lurk stories that are quite dark, which the crazy compositions of this young artist never reveal straight-off, since her narratives take shape with a stain or drip giving birth to her characters and their relationships in space, and hence the story. It is the viewers’ task to follow the adventure in the veins of the marble or drawings of clouds. Mathieu Mercier’s work stands at the crossroads of art and design’s esthetic, conceptual, humoristic and functionalist ambitions. His oeuvre springs from a painstaking observation of form’s relationship to use, and produces objects that harbor different jostling temporalities. The old, the new and the contemporary interact there in a great formal simplicity that can’t fail to suggest the ingenious material appropriations of the bricoleur, the handy do-it-yourselfer, who embodies one of the facets of human genius. The calm before the storm, or has the catastrophe already occurred? Prefiguring the ruins of the 20th century and questioning the extinction of supermodernism and the end of any belief in a universal progress and style, Nicolas Moulin’s imagespush to the extreme the architectural archetypes that sprang from the megalomania of totalitarian politics. His models of buildings in reinforced concrete and arrangements of junked computer parts are an echo of both brutalism and industrial landscapes. Voiding all traces of the human, as when the artist empties Paris of all life by touching up photographs of the city, Moulin’s works generate an undeniable malaise in the viewer. - Mathieu Mercier Provisoirement sans titre, 2001 Peinture, bois, venilia, vernis Paint, wood, contact paper, varnish — 42 x 35 cm Collection Ginette Moulin / Guillaume Houzé, Paris. Landscapes in faded tones float on the surface of Anne Neukamp’s canvases, wavering between a vague figurative painting and an abstraction that is not quite geometrical. Forms and colors tend towards both the organic and the outmoded with a slight air of renewed constructivism, although what really forges the identity of this Berlin-based painter is the successive layers of pigment that melt into one another to better reveal themselves. Steeped in the time the artist puts into producing each piece, Neukamp’s work is part of a pictorial tradition that infuses it with a certain poetry. To the seasoned eye, movie posters and vintage postcards offer a suspicious colored halo that seems to come from the wall where they are displayed. Collages and doodles cloud the original messages and offer us a moment of reflection in the daily hurly-burly of visual communication. Embracing the principles of duplication and re-presentation of used images, Clément Rodzielski formulates, through a reframing effect, hypotheses that allow him to render the subject abstract in favor of the resulting motif. Revealing what lies hidden on the backs of images, Rodzielski raises this question, Does profound meaning come from a mere direction? Ugo Rondinone’s protean work combines the most diverse range of references in systems that this Swiss artist elaborates so as to get closer to and capture human beings’ emotional instability. Shifting between installations that employ sound, sculpture or light, Rondinone’s oeuvre draws viewers into open, indeterminate narratives that are projected in their mental space. The writing of Beckett is often mentioned when talking about this artist’s work, not just because the world is a stage and people wear masks there, but especially because all the mute mouths of his bronze figures seem to be desperately trying to tell us of its emptiness. Narrative and in particular what surrounds it—Joe Scanlan’s ability to generate rumors, his credibility and the impact of fiction on reality lie at the heart of the artist’s work. Along with the sculptures he creates,Scanlan exhibits paintings done from the wood offcuts lying scattered around his studio floor. Bearing the signature of one Donnelle Woolford, a fictional woman artist, they question the relationship the viewer entertains with the work of art and notably the importance the artist’s name plays in our understanding of that work. Gedi Sibony’s sculptures and installations discreetly disturb the space in which they are shown. This New York artist works cardboard, wood, carpeting, plastic sheathes and latex paint into the architecture of the exhibition venue, and the interaction of these “commonplace materials” gives rise to fragile arrangements. Once they have been laid out by the artist, these special collages articulate a new constitution of the space in which the sudden appearance of the unexpected no longer looks like a mess and offers the possibility of a different view of the exhibition venue. Niels Trannois’ paintings tend towards sculpture by highlighting the irregularities of the support and the additions of pigments. This play of collage and overlay develops, in its obvious complexity, a unique twilight world of utter tranquility. Abstraction underlies a strong figurative mental base that is seconded by titles rich in imagery. In this dreamlike stroll, with its weakened colors and dissipated time, memory looms up through flashes, spangles or eternal moons. Xavier Veilhan’s statuary brings together abstract representations of objects, human beings and animals, whose imposing size and faceted rendering conjure up the extensive yet imprecise view of insects; it is a process that introduces a decomposition-recomposition along the lines of a natural analytical cubism. Whether she is inviting us to slip over the wall of illusion by letting us go behind the scenes through scores of curtains and draperies, or leading us into the depths of our unconscious, which she represents with a dark forest, Ulla von Brandenburg plays on the codes of psychoanalysis blended with those of parapsychology, the better to beguile us in the end. Collection / Imprint Catalogues, Biennales & Collections Édité par / Edited by Guillaume Houzé, avec Aurélie Voltz et Mathias Schweizer Auteurs Jean-Marc Ballée Pierre Bal Blanc Jens Hoffmann Claire Le Restif Christiane Rekade Alexis Vaillant offers visitors each year the chance to discover works of art drawn from these two art lovers’ private collection. Now after six years of exhibiting works, the two have decided to publish a retrospective catalog detailing the contents of their collection. Presenting a complete listing of the whole of the collection by acquisition date, the catalog also offers two original approaches to the works of art. The first involved giving carte blanche to five exhibition curators, Pierre Bal Blanc, Claire Le Restif, Alexis Vaillant, Jens Hoffmann, and Christiane Rekade. These individuals develop a personal view of the collection, mounting an exhibition “on paper” in each case. The second original approach is a presentationof the collection in the form of comics, drawn by the illustrator and graphic artist Jean-Marc Ballée, in which the artworks, like humanoid figures, seem to live and move in a science-fiction world. The catalog also gives carte blanche to the graphic artist Mathias Schweizer, who has designed both the book and the overall graphic identity of the Antidote shows.
