Née en 1979 à Dallas, Texas, Gina Qawson vit et travaille à Brooklyn, NY, USA.
Diplomée des Beaux-Arts de University of North-Texas en 2002, elle réalise un Master’s de Beaux-Arts
de la School of the Museum of Fine Arts de Boston en 2005.
Recevoir une lettre de rejet n’est jamais très drôle, de même qu’une couronne funéraire. C’est avec cette
idée en tête que l’artiste Gina Dawson a choisi d’associer des lettres standards de refus à des couronnes
mortuaires. Elle pare ses couronnes en papier d’écharpes brodées d’extraits des lettres de refus reçues.
Cette ensemble de lettres-couronnes suit l’idée qu’un écrit de rejet comme les couronnes funéraires
sont des objets donnés aux gens dans un but de consolation, sans jamais vraiment atteindre leur but.
«Mon travail actuel fait référence à la peine que se donne l’artiste mais aussi à la déception qui accompagne souvent ce choix. Ces lettres, comme la vie et la mort, font partie du parcours d’un artiste.» Ce
travail est toujours en cours.
Born in Dallas, Texas in 1979, Gina Dawson lives and work in Brooklyn, NY, USA.
She received a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2002 and an MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2005.
Getting a rejection letter isn’t fun, neither is getting a funeral wreath. With that in mind, artist Gina
Dawson decided to combine the generic rejection letter writing with funeral wreaths, surrounding the
wreaths with knit sashes with the rejection. The rejection letter wreaths were made with the idea that
funeral wreaths and rejection letters are both things given to people and are intended as consolation,
but always fall short of being consoling. «These are funeral wreaths with text pulled from my personal
rejection letters. I created these pieces after stitching some of my rejection letters and becoming fascinated with them. They are objects of consolation that can’t possibly make up for the loss.» «My current
work addresses both the labor of being an artist and the disappointment that often comes with that
choice. These letters, like work and death are all part of the life of being an artist.» This work is still in
progress.
