Chapter III - Nocturnal Navigation At the time of the successful conclusion of the engine-and navigation trials, the lower limb of a vernal sun was already tangent to a bright horizon line. In spite of a sweet twilight on that part of the North Sea, no star was shining yet on the celestial vault, the eastern part of which, however, already belonged to the mysterious domain ruled by the night. On board the " Flying Tramp ", a few glasses of champagne had generously contributed to a cheerful atmosphere. In the wheel-house, however, weariness and light drunkenness united their efforts to exhaust the white-collar's who were not used to remain standing during so many hours. The only person, indeed, who availed of a chair, was the pilot, a former naval officer of an earlier generation; while honouring the various sandwiches, he had cautiously avoided champagne and preferred the more refreshing taste of some light beer. With the exception of two engineers, the whole company left the wheel-house and, with an unstable step, aimed at the door of the gangway leading to the mess of the maintenance-crew where they sat down with relief and, crossing their arms under their heads, quickly fell asleep. Reaching for the steering console-telephone, the pilot said: - Hello Arthur! - and switched over to " Loudspeaker ".... No reply. He gave a swift glance at the neighbouring chief engineer : -1 bet... that bloody bus-driver is snoring...-The engineer indifferently shrugged his shoulders. Upset, the pilot pushed the " Emergency " button... The intercom-loudspeaker released some confused noise...then the cough of someone trying to recover his countenance. - Arthur! ...Did you believe you still were in your damned bus during the mid-day pause?-uttered the pilot in a rather irritated tone. - Certainly not, sir ...excuse me, sir... I am afraid a sustained attention during a six-hour watch is ...is beyond my nervous resistance... but my colleague has just arrived to take over, sir...replied Arthur. In a persuasive tone, the pilot retorted: - I'am afraid you shall remain stand-by while your mate keeps the watch...the automatic navigation lights got just into operation...switch them off to check the emergency system...fine...please switch again to automatic and re-start both engines... we' re going home right now - ; then he pushed the " RC " button again. At the very instant when the side-, fore- and aft navigation lights got turned on again, the wheelhouse's floor lightly shivered under the feet of the three men. During the post-trial immobility and due to some three-knot tidal current, the vessel had drifted to SSW; this was without consequence since she was sufficiently distant from the British coasts. In the SRGO, Artur's mate, a former operator of the automatic letter routing- machines in the London's Central Post Office, took over the guidance of the " Flying Tramp ". Like it often happens, hazard, in its magic ways of operation, had helped this man in successfully passing the selection tests and in realizing a childhood's dream: navigate. His name was...John Sailors! Through the intercom, the pilot heard his voice: - John Sailors, sir, I just took over the command -Aye, John... we still got a long way to go...full speed ahead... take care of the priority rules... we remain in permanent radio-contact...don't hesitate to call when necessary...good luck! - said the pilot, lightly smiling. - Okay...thank you, sir - replied Sailors. A black night fully covered the North Sea: on the port side of the ship, the pilot observed a brightly shining Venus in the ENE, neglecting for a moment to look at the navigation screens. In the London's SRGO-tower, Sailors got another view of the marine traffic than the one his colleague Arthur had enjoyed of in the course of the diurnal trip: instead of a live picture of all environing floating objects on a white background, he was astonished to see a multitude of extremely bright spots shining on a black screen. Thereby he got aware of the unexpected naval traffic density, particularly along the south-eastern coast of England which appeared on the screen as a continuous yeUow line. In order to get a better idea of the distances separating the " Flying Tramp " from the surrounding ships, he zoomed and, at that view, felt sweat wetting his forehead and his back. Pointing to the closest vessel, he noticed that she was only two miles straight ahead and decided to reduce the speed down to 15 knots. He set the course five degrees to port and stated with satisfaction that the opposite ship was effecting the same manoeuvre. Thanks to the insertion into the navigation system of a modernized version of Internet's Marine Traffic, he was able to identify not only the ships, their category and their trade, but also the coastal aids to navigation such as North Foreland's Radar Tower under the form of a rose-coloured diamond with a point in the middle. In the " Flying Tramp" 's wheel-house, the pilot commented : - Well done, John...keep that speed ...as you can see on your screen, at the height of Dover, you're going to meet a mixed downwardsand continental traffic through the Strait...but...so far, we are not yet...by the way, what about Arthur? He had some meal, sir...now...well...he could do nothing but falling asleep - replied the man wholly engaged in his task. -1 guess he did...- shortly added the pilot. A few hours later, the " Flying Tramp " had successfully inserted herself into the downwards traffic off Dungeness and, in the headway of numerous other vessels, was making for Beachy Head. In the East, the sun was just emerging from the horizon when the ship rounded that point off. Sailors set the course at 270° and increased the speed up to 25 knots. At the end of a second hour in such sailing conditions, the vessel arrived in view of Bembridge Point at the Solent's outlet. The pilot reached for the steering board-telephone and said: - Fine, John...you proved to be wellposted on your job...once at the roadstead's inlet, I'll take over He pushed the " LC " ( Local Control) button. - Thank you, sir...we'll be there within about half an hour...we have already been contacted by a ship-owner's officer...they will be waiting for us on wharf 15 - answered Sailors, not concealing his own contentment. Not withstanding his state of fatigue, the pilot, who had taken only a pair of hours rest after the completion of the trials in the middle of the North Sea, reached for the binoculars and clearly distinguished the inlet of Southampton's roadstead. -1 guess you may awake all the sleeping white-collar's downstairs...we are nearing the company's wharves - he told the chief engineer who sat down on the wheel-house's floor near his two colleagues. Keeping with difficulty his eyes open, the man got up and unhooked a wall-telephone and said: - Gentlemen, within half an hour, we'll get moored at wharf 15...you're requested to disembark immediately upon the arrival in order to allow the maintenance team to occupy the control room and the mess Downstairs, ship-owner's representatives, engineers and technicians acknowledged that announcement with relief and gathered their belongings in view of leaving the ship. As soon as the " Flying Tramp " came at a stop at the height of wharf 15, the pilot started both port side-propellers: the vessel drew slowly closer to the quay along which big rubber fenders had been disposed every five yards over a distance of about half a mile. Just before the hull came gently into contact with them, the pilot pulled a handle which caused two pairs of fore-and aft mooring-loops to emerge until they got fastened around the mooring-bitts by a team of wharfingers. By pressing a button on the control board, the stern port-hole opened and the accommodation ladder got lowered: the people who had witnessed the maiden trip embarked on a service-boat waiting for them along the wharf. They were immediately replaced by a maintenance team and dock workers who started the loading operations: opening the huge side-panels and preparing the integrated cranes for the lifting of the containers. The work of the maintenance team consisted in verifying the correct operation of all the equipment necessary for the steering of the ship, checking a safe nuclear radiation level in all compartments and proceeding to a general check of the reactors. Twenty-four hours later, the " Flying Tramp " was ready to undertake her first blind transatlantic adventure. At six o'clock pm, after the closing of all side-and wheel-house's panels, everybody left the ship, except a single man who purposedly remained behind: Abdoul Jamiil Al Baabouj. L. Bouillon ( 8th Prom. « S.S.Manitoba. 14h.l2. 20°40 long.ouest et 45° 11 lat.nord. Victimes attenta. Bespoke race tracker delivers real-time data using FB150 A global audience is keeping minute-by-minute track of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet thanks to a bespoke race tracker powered by FleetBroadband. Dark twist: Abu Dhabi finish first in stage 1 of Leg 3 Photo: IAN ROMANA/olvo Ocean Race The FleetBroadband 150 terminal on each boat is powerful enough to deliver race positions and a range of other data every 10 seconds. The boats' positions are then updated every minute on the Volvo Ocean Race tracker - which has attracted 1.4 million unique visitors during the race to date. More data "It is beautifully efficient, transmitting only 80 bytes per second, but delivering pinpoint accuracy, and the crew don't have to do anything - it is completely automatic," explains Mark Covell, Inmarsat's race correspondent. "As if the position reporting wasn't enough, the trackers also deliver live data from the yachts' onboard systems, including distance to leader, heading, average speed, instant speed, average and maximum wind speeds, true wind direction and even average wave height," he added. The tracker also 'geotags' other content. The user simply clicks on a boat on the tracker map to see news, images and video from that point in the race. Stealth zone Mark said that teams love the tracking facility - it allows families to keep up to date with where their loved ones are and lets support crews know how their team is progressing. The crews don't have access to the tracker themselves - they only get a read-out of the yacht's latitude and longitude every three hours. However, the information did help teams prepare before they entered a 'stealth zone' during legs two and three to avoid possible pirate attacks. Secret haven The boats were lifted onto a cargo vessel and carried to a new start point for stage two of the second leg for a sprint to Abu Dhabi and once again at the start of leg three, before heading for Sanya. The secret haven for both legs was later revealed to be Male in the Maldives. During this period, the public tracker hid the true location of the yachts and informed the audience about what was happening. Bespoke solution Hauwell Studios, which provides the Géovoile services, developed the tailor-made race tracker building on experience in many other races, including the previous Volvo Ocean Race. Manager Yann Groleau is a big fan of yacht racing and loves maps of all kinds. He has worked on web-based race tracking solutions for eight years. "Every race tracker is different to meet the requirements of the race organisers - this time it had to deliver the compressed data every 10 seconds, whereas normally the requirement is usually around every 30 minutes," explained Yann. Piracy reporting His online solutions use home-grown algorithms to ensure specific encrypted information can be delivered in a highly-compressed format using the limited bandwidth available. "When the boats entered the stealth zone in leg two, I essentially changed the tracker to ensure their positions were hidden once they crossed a certain latitude," he explained. "The positions were then hidden, but known - of course, I cannot divulge how we did this." FleetBroadband provides ideal connectivity to the internet, where all vessels can access the latest information provided by the International Maritime Bureau piracy reporting centre in Kuala Lumpur and also MSCHOA, the EUNAVFOR maritime security centre for the Horn of Africa. Distress and Safety "The Volvo Ocean Race yachts are all fitted with the full range of GMDSS-compliant distress and safety communications equipment," explained Inmarsat safety services manager Peter Blackhurst. "Additionally, their FleetBroadband terminals were modified to be distress enabled with the latest voice distress upgrade before the race started. "This provides direct access to rescue coordination centres in case of emergency." Telefonica triumphs Tracker fans saw how Telefonica won leg three, arriving at Sanya on 4 February. This was three wins out of three for the team, which now leads the table ahead of Camper. The fleet came through the congestion and light winds of the Malacca and Singapore Straits to face the perils of stronger winds and unidentified floating objects before reaching Sanya. The boats set off on leg four, a 6,007nm race to Auckland, New Zealand on 19 February - the day after the in-port race at Sanya.
