The present of the past. Modes and tenses in historical writing The matter seems vast: students embarking on history studies are assured by professors that historians write using the present or the past, but that they never mix the two tenses, and in the same way, they never write using the future. Dissertations must be written in this way during one’s studies, and books also, when the time comes for doing research. And yet, it is not difficult to demonstrate that Résumés / Abstracts Écrire l’histoire, n° 12 – automne 2013, 153-158 EH12.indb 153 the best historians often go against this rule. This article intends to examine the roles devolved on the present and the past in historical writing which must ceaselessly intermingle discourse and narrative, and mistrust fiction. In this domain, it is without a doubt counterproductive to decree norms which are too strict. What is essential is to be conscious, with each sentence, of the effects of knowledge and intelligibility produced by the use of such or such mode, or such or such tense. A country without a history. Algeria, 2011-2013 The contemporary history of Algeria is divided between the complex history of the colonial period – and especially of the war of independence – and the period of an independent Algeria which does not exist as a field of research for historians. In a country which opened itself up to the experience of democracy over 20 years ago, recent history remains a taboo, despite a growing social demand on the part of the younger generations. Based on concrete experience, this article explores the working conditions of historians of the present. In particular, it analyses the issues which are at stake in the interaction between historians and witnesses, each marked – and in different ways – by events: the October 1988 riots, the years of democratization from 1988-1992, and especially, the civil war of the 1990s. The present is more than the current moment The main question of this paper is to think about the singularity of the history of the present, which differentiates it from immediate or very contemporary history. This singularity resides in the contemporaneousness of the non-contemporary, in the temporal dimension of the area of experience, of the entire dimension of the 154 EH12.indb 154 present of the past. The history of the present is not, therefore, a new period to add to the four ‘old’ ones, but a new way of looking at the past, examining how it is used, re-used, and recycled. To support this position, I will focus on the problematics in Lieux de mémoire (Realms of Memory), by Pierre Nora, and also on the history of reflections on time since Saint Augustine, Bergson, Husserl, Gadamer, Deleuze… Moreover, I will show that the notion of present time results from both the crystallization of meaning, and heterochrony, which is non-linear time examined by psychoanalysts and scholars of hermeneutics. Résumés / Abstracts Écrire l’histoire, n° 12 – automne 2013, 153-158 8/11/13 15:27:44 The writing and the experience of erasure. Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly’s empty present In the politically conservative vision of the writer Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly (1808-1889), the present seems devoted to emptiness and absence, while the past – the time before the French Revolution or the last counter-revolutionary struggles of the 19th century – is celebrated with nostalgia. Beyond this explicit political positioning, one can find in Barbey’s novels a specific narrative representation of the emptiness of the present. And one can thus invent, with Barbey, a kind of alternative historiography, where the traces of the past are less important than the marks of their erasure in the present – a historiography of haunting. This article also puts forward a contextualization of this writing of the empty present in Barbey, by emphasizing the fact that his literary project developed during the time, and in the shadow, of the 1848 Revolution. As a man of letters and a journalist, Barbey was first committed to the Legitimist Party and the defense of the Bourbon family, but in 1851 he became a supporter of Louis Napoléon Bonaparte’s authoritarian government. This shift in Barbey’s political experience is not visible in his novels – it was erased. The emptiness and insipidity of the present in Aurevillian novels can be interpreted as being something other than the only expression of a historical reactionary’s thought. They are evidence of erasure, the marks of a non-representative action of a political experience. News, event and history in L’été 80, by Marguerite Duras As a novelist, Marguerite Duras does not configure her stories much, giving central importance to the event, as a break and as an obstacle: a politically-committed woman, faithful to a ‘communism of thought’ (to cite the expression of Dionys Mascolo), the author abandoned all thought which was doctrinaire from 1950 onwards. After 1968, she was only interested in utopia. Then in 1980, the editor of Libération, Serge July, asked her to write a column for his paper, which would be devoted to ‘alternative news’ neglected by the ‘mainstream press’. Duras accepted. For two months, every Wednesday, she stopped or embraced the ‘passage of time’: one could follow stories about ‘the peaceful strike of the Gdansk shipyard workers’, ‘the mad passion of a young holiday camp supervisor for a child, whom she has arranged to meet for a date when he is no longer a minor’, ‘the 30th of July at midnight’, and the arrival at the sides of the columnist of the formal ‘you’, of the person who would become ‘Yann Andrea’ in the autumn and to whom the book was dedicated. That summer, ‘on Gdansk I rested my mouth and I kissed you’, she tells us. Writing the present, and in the present, the column L’Été 80 fabricates the event, all the while projecting its historicity and rewriting twelve years forward, under the title of Yann Andréa Steiner. Quick, produce a genocide. The Despoiler, by Reginald Barker (1915) From its creation at the end of July 1915, Triangle, an ambitious new American production and distribution company, got started on a feature-length fictional motion-picture entitled The Despoiler, which combined the best talents from Kay Bee, a production unit under the responsibility of Thomas H. Ince. The story opposes a modest Christian village in the Balkans with a Middle-Eastern and cruel khan that a counsellor from Mitteleuropa cannot manage to control. Even though the places and names are imaginary and censored, the allusions to the Armenian Genocide are quite plain. The film is known only from a copy distributed in France in 1917, put together again in relation to the original, itself known only by means of the complete shot list. In studying these two versions and the history of their distribution, one endeavours to go back over the complex relations between the American film industry and the country’s foreign policy at a time of neutrality (1915), and then when the USA became engaged in the conflict (1917). Listening to history or the key to past struggles. About the credits to A Grin without a Cat, by Chris Marker (1977) Official images, extracts from films, ends of television reports and neglected film reels constitute the basic materials of the documentary which Chris Marker devoted to left-wing struggles and the crushing of these between 1967 and 1977. A Grin without a Cat, that Marker has built as an ‘anti-police investigation’, looks like a history essay on the present. Marker, however, through his aesthetic convictions, puts forward a way of working which is unusual. This lucid film about failure, made for the generations to come, begins and ends with long credits which create a singular audio-visual symphony. In particular, Marker relies on a music arrangement by Luciano Berio, whom he chose for the task of incarnating his conception and sense of history. This paper is about understanding the way in which using and listening to a theme and variations for orchestra, associated with archive images, enable history to be written in the present. Or, it is about the way in which images and sounds come together to make history. Rappeler Roland: a translation of La Chanson de Roland into the present present. Interview with Frédéric Boyer In Rappeler Roland (2013), his latest published book, Frédéric Boyer evokes his work, that of the ‘translateur’, when he translated La Chanson de Roland (The Song of Roland), a chanson de geste, into the language spoken today. Is this chanson a song of veterans which bears witness to a living connection with an epic past? How does his translation enrich the language we speak today? What does a battle lost by Roland in a very distant past that is the Middle Ages tell us in a lyrical way today? Translation is an art of voluntary and constructive confrontation, which mobilizes very specific tools: those of transposition and of trans- or teleportation within the very language itself. J. H. Prynne To Pollen. To Pollen. Language at war extract translated and presented by Abigail Lang. To write the history of the present, for a poet, might be to transcribe in the heat of the event, in the uncertainty of outcomes, the confusion of sometimes paroxysmal impressions before they settle in a self-evident narrative. To testify to the Iraq War in words that tell the violence the media expurgate. To find a form and a language for this, that avoids pathos and complacency. To let an individual voice intermittently sound against the hum of the contemporary, the white noise of political, financial and military systems. The Iraq war burst into the work of British poet J.H. Prynne (1936-) in 2004, forcing him to rethink the connections between this massive event and his own life. This may be, he thinks, what is at stake in To Pollen, a sequence published in 2006 and whose seven last stanzas are here given in French translation. As to translating in the present, it feels like confronting a text before the sediments of the original have settled. Writing history together. The return of conterfactual experimentation This paper is about a singular form of historical writing production which is interactive and playful. It concerns a collective experiment carried out in November 2011 in Grenoble with about sixty people, whom we asked to reflect on two counterfactual questions: the successful escape of King Louis XVI in 1791, and the absence 157 8/11/13 15:27:44 of the slave trade. Our exchanges were retranscribed in this article which reveals the reflexive dimension and the pedagogical potential of counterfactual exercises. Uchronia as conjectural cultural history. Rêves de Gloire, by Roland C. Wagner Uchronia is a literary genre which sets the scene for possible variations in our history. In his novel Rêves de gloire (2011), Roland C. Wagner, presents the reader with characters who participated in the establishment of a counter-culture, and whose paths cross in an alternative Algiers born of another resolution to the Algerian War. These fictional documents, testimonies, articles and stories allow for a piece-by-piece reconstruction of the mosaic of a conjectural cultural history, where rock n’ roll, LSD (‘Glory’) and pacifism occupy a crucial place. Re-reading ‘Le Voltaïque’ and La Quête infinie de l’autre rive African historiography has contributed to the renewal of the problematics, methods and material at the disposal of historians and literary critics in general. Studies on uchronia, while showing great interest in the writing of history and its possible diversions, have nevertheless given little space to Africa. This essay proposes a rereading of two uchronian fictions, namely ‘Tribal Scars’ (1974), a short story by Ousmane Sembène, and my epic poem, La Quête infinie de l’autre rive (2011). The essay also suggests that the ‘uchronian corpus’ within African literature would, if better known, enrich reflection on the specificities of this genre.
