Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America, Nardi converted 1955 B24S
Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America, Nardi converted Automobiles d'Exception à Retromobile, Paris Year: 1955 Auction House: Bonhams Chassis number: B24S-1148 Date February 07 2009 Engine number: B24-1204 Registration number: Unknown Body number: Unknown Sold for: € 315.500 This Lancia Aurelia Spider America is one of the rare examples still in original and unmolested condition. Possessing a delightful patina, the car has covered a mere 47,000 miles (76,000 kilometres) from new and had only three owners to date. The first owner, a resident of San Francisco, drove the Aurelia for two years before selling it to the second owner, Mr Barnett, an engineer. Mr Barnett kept the car lovingly for 41 years and only used it on special occasions. After the death of his wife, he stored the Aurelia before selling it to the third (lady) owner, who has covered approximately 8,500 miles in ten years. When - after a personal tip off - this fully authentic Spider America was discovered, it was hidden away in Mr Barnett s garage, located in the wooded hills south of San Francisco, sharing its accommodation with a Bugatti Type 35B and Type 57 Ventoux, Ferrari 275GTS, Lancia B20 Nardi and other exotics. At this time the Spider was silver grey, repainted by its second owner more than 20 years previously. After acquisition, the Spider was shipped to Europe where examination of the coachwork revealed no rust at all, while traces of the original creamy-white paint were observed in several places. It was therefore decided to strip the body back to bare metal and repaint it in its original colour. No welding was necessary because no rust was found an extremely rare occurrence with a car of this age! It received a high quality nitro-cellulose re-spray in the correct shade of cream. The interior and boot upholstery were both completely original and all rubber floor mats and related carpets were reusable after cleaning. The factory-original black leather seats were likewise intact, and their renovation was entrusted to a respected classic car upholstery specialist. Consequently, all leather in this car remains the same as delivered by Lancia in 1955. Even the original canvas top and tonneau have been preserved after replacement of only the plastic rear window. All four bumpers and the grille were in good and undamaged condition, but it was nevertheless decided to have some of the parts re-plated. In the process all of the coachwork s rubber seals were replaced by authentic parts, while the rare and precious Marchal headlamps, with their distinctive vertical bars, were retained. The special Nardi engine (with two down-draught Weber carburettors and alloy airbox) turned out to be in original and excellent running condition. It showed, and still shows, impressive oil pressure even under strain. Consequently an overhaul was not considered necessary and a major service turned out to be sufficient. An original mild-steel dual exhaust system was installed, while further servicing included fitting a new clutch disc with heavier springs, and rebuilding the front axle in Italy to eliminate oil leakage from the sliding pillars. For safety reasons the braking system was fully rebuilt using new linings, wheel cylinders, pistons, hoses and master cylinder, while all drums were cleaned and checked for roundness. New and improved Michelin X 165x400 tyres of the correct pattern, permitting a higher top speed, were fitted. Since then the car has been used exclusively for special events and rallies. The lady owner took the car to the Giro di Sicilia and Targa Florio and participated twice in the Milano Sanremo Rally (2003 and 2005). The car was shown at the Dutch Palace Het Loo Concours in 2003, exhibited at the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring and demonstration-driven on the track. Apart from several local rallies, it also participated in the well known Red Cross Rally in the Netherlands (2006 and 2007). Recently the Lancia was an invited entry in the Rothschild Concours in Genval, Brussels where it received high acclaim and was rewarded with a trophy. The Aurelia has never once failed its owner, and apart from replacing a non-functioning regulator during the Giro di Sicilia (a Bosch unit is now fitted) no repairs had to be undertaken in any of these events, all of which were finished in a most impressive display of reliability. Today this cherished B24 Aurelia Spider America remains an exquisite and original automobile showing an impressive patina that is rarely encountered these days. It has always been kept in heated storage, while restricting its use to spring and summertime only has contributed to the present lovely condition of this beautiful Pinin Farina creation. With the car comes the Netherlands title, US title, FIVA passport, a file on all maintenance work undertaken at Strada e Corsa, a collection of photographs, a leather bag for storage of the side screens, the original tonneau cover and the jack. The owner is prepared to give the rare Aurelia parts book, a facsimile of the B24 Spider owner s manual and an extremely rare and original Lancia Aurelia tool kit (in its authentic plastic box!) to the fortunate private purchaser. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a three-owner, low-mileage, Nardi-converted Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America in original condition and equipped with all its authentic accessories, ready to drive anywhere! A rare find indeed. 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America, Nardi convertedCoachwork by Pinin Farina Chassis no.
