JunE 3, 2015 - 6PM Results for Greek Art Reflect Dynamic Development of PIASA’s Specialist Department PIASA 118 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré 75008 Paris - France PRESS AND COMMUNICATION Cécile Demtchenko Woringer T +33 1 53 34 12 95 - M +33 6 22 16 85 96 [email protected] Press Release RESULTS On Wednesday 3 June 2015, PIASA offered a selection of major works epitomizing the best of Greek creativity. The 90 lots generated over €540,000 – the highest auction total since PIASA launched its specialist department. By showcasing artists like Takis and Pavlos, PIASA’s saleroom selection wowed both Greek and international collectors, with results confirming the importance of Greek artists on the international market. Success of New Approach The sale’s top price of €78,680 rewarded Magnetic Wall IV (lot 39) by Vassiliakis Takis (est. €60,000-70,000), an emblematic work by the celebrated kinetic artist born in 1925. By playing with light, movement and music, Takis has become a major figure in Greek contemporary art. His famous Signals – metallic antennae reacting to the slightest movement – were also on offer and proved mighty popular, with a Signal from 2009 (lot 38) fetching €31,900 (est. €25,000-35,000). The acrylic on canvas Infinity Field – Lefkada Series (lot 46) by Theodoros Stamos (1922-1997) attained €57,420 (est. €35,000-45,000). Stamos was one of the youngest exponents of Abstract Expressionism alongside Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko. The influence of these illustrious contemporaries can be found in his work, together with a taste for powerful expanses of luminous colour. A 1964 poster assemblage (lot 68) by Pavlos (born 1930), exploiting his favourite technique to create a veritable sculpture in paper, his favourite material, took €51,040 (est. €40,000-60,000). Also of note was the bronze sculpture Cactus (lot 30) by Memos Makris (1913-93) that sold for €16,588 (est. €7,000-10,000). After a bidding war between the saleroom and the telephone, a painted bronze (lot 49) by Costas Coulentianos (1918-95) flew to €10,846 (est. €1,200-1,800). The section devoted to artists’ jewellery also enjoyed great success, with a silver necklace (lot 57) signed Philolaos (1923-2010) – from an edition of 8 – obtaining €2,807 (est. €800-1,000). All prices include buyer’s premium. 2 Top Lots Lot 39 – Takis: estimate €60-70 000 | Result: €78,680 Lot 46 – Stamos: estimate €35-45,000 | Result: €57,420 Lot 68 – Pavlos: estimate €40-60,000 | Result: €51,040 Lot 38 – Takis: estimate €25-35,000 | Result: €31,900 Lot 34 – Takis: estimate €15-20,000 | Result: €25,520 Lot 35 – Takis: estimate €15-20,000 | Result: €24,244 Lot 37 – Takis: estimate €15-20,000 | Result: €24,244 Lot 31 – Athanassiades: estimate €18-20,000 | Result: €22,968 Lot 36 – Takis: estimate €15-20,000 | Result: €21,692 Lot 30 – Makris: estimate €7-10,000 | Result: €16,588 3 Takis (born in 1925) Mur magnétique IV, 2003 Technique mixte sur panneau de bois 150 x 300 cm Signé et daté au dos «Takis 2003» Exposition : Takis Acireale Milan, l’oeuvre d’Art comme forme d’énergie, Milano-Sicily, illustré sur les pp. 138-139, 144-145 €60,000-70,000 Lot n° 39 Result: €78,680 4 Takis (born in 1925) Signal, 2009 Fer et aluminium Signé sur la base «Takis» Enregistré sous le numéro 798 des archives de la Fondation Takis Cette oeuvre est accompagnée d’un certificat de la Fondation Takis Provenance : Collection privée, Grèce H 294 cm €25,000-35,000 Lot n°38 Result: €31,900 5 Theodoros STAMOS (1922-1997) Infinity Field, Lefkada Series, 1980 Acrylique sur toile Signée, titrée, datée et dédicacée au dos sur le chassis « ‘Infinity Field, Lefkada Series, For C.D.
