BENEDETTO MARCELLO (1686 - 1739) SONATAS FOR RECORDER No. 2-3-9-10-12 SONATAS FOR CELLO No. 1-3-4-5-6 Piero Barbareschi Translated by Daniela Pilarz B MUSICA Benedetto Marcello’s artistic output spans many types of compositions, and even strays into prose and poetry. Among his literary works is his famous «Il teatro alla moda», a satire on the degeneration of the music world of his days. In music, he applied himself to various genres, writing instrumental, vocal and sacred compositions for a total of about 700 works. The Sonatas for recorder and continuo featured on this disc are part of a collection of twelve, published for the first time by G. Sala in Venice in 1712. Reprinted in Amsterdam in 1715, they became very popular and were later transcribed obviously not by the same composer - for transverse flute, when this instrument won the favour of both composers and performers. The sonatas are structured in the traditional Adagio - Allegro - Adagio Allegro movements, and are typical of 18th-century Venetian music: expressive adagios in binary rhythm (or, as in the first movement of Sonata No. 2, in the triple rhythm of a siciliana) and agile and high-strung allegros with frequent episodes of imitation in the bass. Sonata No.12 is atypical: the customary four movements (which include also two dances: a menuet and a gavotte) appear in a different order (Adagio - Allegro - Allegro - Adagio), and the work ends with a famous Ciaccona where the flute, owing to the repetitiveness typical of that music form, can demonstrate at length its expressive and virtuoso qualities. ANTICA enedetto Marcello (1686-1739), like his brother Alessandro (1684-1750) and Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1750), was one of those «amateur» composers who lived and worked in the Venice of the great Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741). The word amateur must be understood in its nobler meaning, for it refers to artists who possessed a fine musical education and the taste and cultural background which was theirs either by birth - as many of them belonged to noble families - or by acquisition, as in Marcello’s case, through the important positions held in the city’s public life. Of course, living in 18th-century Venice was by itself a great fortune, as this city offered a limitless and unmatched source of cultural and artistic stimuli. Despite his diligent study of the instrument, Marcello’s thematic ideas, resulting in a very charming dialogue between it and the customary continuo, be it a harpsichord or a second cello. Also these Sonatas consist of the traditional four movements, but in the fast tempos the episodes of imitation between the rhythmic and melodic lines of the cello and those of the harpsichord are more frequent, an element, this, granting a greater cohesion to the whole. ANTICA MUSICA Benedetto Marcello never became as skilled a violinist as, for instance, his brother Alessandro; however he developed a profound knowledge of string instruments, of their strengths and weaknesses. This is why his Sonatas for cello and basso continuo, published for the first time in Venice between 1712 and 1717 and reprinted in London in 1732, are among his more meaningful instrumental works.
