Arlington, Virginia SAINT AGNES CHURCH MASS INTENTIONS This week, with the tragedy at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC, we were once more confronted with the senseless loss of life. Whether the loss of life of a loved one or an injury, or the emotional trauma that comes to people as a result of this event, we see the effects of choices for evil. As I am writing this, the reasons for all of this are being unraveled. Perhaps we will never know all of the motivations behind this. We bring to God in prayer, those who died, those who were injured, our public safety officials, medical personnel and so many others who helped others on that day and will do so in the weeks ahead. As a people of the Gospel of Christ, we also pray for the man who did this, that he may be forgiven and know the mercy of God. We will have a seminarian for the Diocese of Arlington come to St. Agnes for a pastoral education assignment. Mr. Andrew “Drew” Haissig is a third year theologian at Theological College (“TC”) in Washington, DC, taking his academic studies at the Catholic University of America. As part of his parish placement learning, he will be at St. Agnes with us on particular Sundays during the school year as a seminarian, and the next school year, Fall, 2014, as a transitional deacon. His ordination to priesthood is expected in June, 2015. Drew will be involved with assisting in the Sunday Religious Education program classes. Please remember to keep him and all of our seminarians in your prayers. Last Sunday was a picture-perfect day with sunshine, a few clouds, and cool breeze. It was the perfect setting for our parish picnic. Thank you to Owen Beirne, Jr., and all of the tremendous volunteers that made this possible. Father Lee Roos Question of the Week: Are we the “children of light” Jesus seeks, as enthusiastic for the coming kingdom as we are about less-enduring treasures? 2nd Collection next Sun., Sept. 29: The Catholic University of America is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, DC. It provides an academically rigorous education guided by Catholic intellectual tradition to nearly 7,000 students every year. Founded in 1977, New Hope Housing is a non-profit agency in Northern Virginia committed to finding creative and lasting solutions to end the cycle of homelessness by offering homeless men, women and children the services they need to change their lives and succeed. Each of these success stories adds to a stronger, healthier community for all. Its vision is “a home and bright future for every man, woman and child in our community.” It is the oldest and largest provider of shelter beds in Northern Virginia. New Hope Housing is community-based, welcomes all, treats each individual with dignity and respect, is an effective steward of its human and financial resources, and a competent and dedicated staff is critical to its mission. In line with providing not only shelter but also the tools to build a better life, the core of New Hope Housing services for residents is built around education, employment, debt reduction, and life skills as the means to obtain and maintain housing. Many residents work with individually assigned case managers to develop Individual Service Plans, designed to address the resident’s immediate crisis needs and to outline steps toward housing. Residents are also provided on-site alcohol/drug services; mental health assistance; medical/dental services; educational assessment, counseling; life skills classes; recreational, social and cultural programming; employment assessment, job skill training placement, job search and job placement help; and a children’s services program. Referral to public services in the community, both on-site at New Hope Housing locations and in the community, are used extensively. New Hope Housing operates six emergency shelter programs providing 179 shelter beds year-round plus an additional 47 beds during winter months. During extreme cold or hot weather, there is a “no turn-away” policy. The shelter programs first provide safe, decent, and welcoming housing along with nutritious meals. The goal is to rapidly re-house residents into appropriate affordable housing in Brother Dennis wishes to contribute $1,600 to New Hope Housing to assist in its work with homeless families and individuals in Northern Virginia.
