Arlington, Virginia
SAINT AGNES CHURCH
MASS INTENTIONS
This week, with the tragedy at the Navy Yard in
Washington, DC, we were once more confronted with the
senseless loss of life. Whether the loss of life of a loved one
or an injury, or the emotional trauma that comes to people
as a result of this event, we see the effects of choices for
evil. As I am writing this, the reasons for all of this are
being unraveled. Perhaps we will never know all of the
motivations behind this. We bring to God in prayer, those
who died, those who were injured, our public safety
officials, medical personnel and so many others who helped
others on that day and will do so in the weeks ahead. As a
people of the Gospel of Christ, we also pray for the man
who did this, that he may be forgiven and know the mercy
of God.
We will have a seminarian for the Diocese of Arlington
come to St. Agnes for a pastoral education assignment. Mr.
Andrew “Drew” Haissig is a third year theologian at
Theological College (“TC”) in Washington, DC, taking his
academic studies at the Catholic University of America. As
part of his parish placement learning, he will be at St.
Agnes with us on particular Sundays during the school year
as a seminarian, and the next school year, Fall, 2014, as a
transitional deacon. His ordination to priesthood is expected
in June, 2015. Drew will be involved with assisting in the
Sunday Religious Education program classes. Please
remember to keep him and all of our seminarians in your
prayers.
Last Sunday was a picture-perfect day with sunshine, a few
clouds, and cool breeze. It was the perfect setting for our
parish picnic. Thank you to Owen Beirne, Jr., and all of the
tremendous volunteers that made this possible.

Question of the Week: Are we the
“children of light” Jesus seeks, as
enthusiastic for the coming kingdom as
we are about less-enduring treasures?

St. Agnes now has a bi-weekly e-newsletter (email
newsletter) which includes various parish updates and event
info. Email ([email protected]) to subscribe.
With school and religious education classes beginning, we
want to remind all driving on the premises to please drive
slowly and safely in the church parking lots. For Saint
Agnes School and the Religious Education program, this
includes both drop-off and pick-up car pools. Also, walkers,
please remember to look both ways before crossing lanes
where cars may be driving.
With September upon us it’s time to see if there’s sufficient
interest among parents of young children to re-start the
Sunday 9:00 AM Mass Nursery co-op. If several parents
would like to get together and re-establish the nursery coop, it would be helpful. There’s a nursery room in the lower
church (downstairs) that is equipped with toys. However,
the room cannot be used without adequate adult
supervision. Want to help? Please call the parish office.
Volunteers must meet Protection of Children requirements.
Please join us at the 2nd annual Time and Talent
Stewardship Fair in the parish hall after the 9:00 AM and
10:30 AM and 12:00 NOON Masses today, Sun., Sept. 22.
All parishioners are welcome to learn about volunteer
opportunities in various parish ministries and organizations.
Coffee and donuts will be provided. We look forward to
seeing you.
It’s less than a month away! Forget the foursome, register

HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY
Thank you to those who attended the Kick-Off last Sunday!
We continue to welcome all high school students to join us
at our weekly St. Agnes Youth Nights (STAY’n) in the
parish hall from 7:00 – 8:30 PM.
Today, Sun., Sept. 22, the focus is STAY’n hopeful. Pope
Francis said that our personal journeys as Christians are not
always easy. Difficulties are part of the path that leads to
God’s glory; therefore we must not be discouraged. Come
out for an evening of fellowship, games, and discussions
about our journeys of faith. Snacks will be provided.
Next Sun., Sept. 29, we are blessed to have our very first
Youth Ministry Holy Hour & Community Dinner!
Spend time in prayer STAY’n hungry for our Eucharistic
Lord, and then join us for a free, delicious home cooked
meal afterwards.
Save The Date: This year, RALLY
will be on Oct. 27 at Marymount
University. Every year the Office of
Youth Ministry sponsors RALLY as
their largest outreach event that
celebrates our faith and love of the
Lord! They are planning for
hundreds of high school students to gather for over eight
hours of music with Sanctus Real and the Run Tour, Paul
George, and Sunday Mass with Bishop Loverde. Cost is
$20 (includes t-shirt, dinner, and snacks). Registration

BROTHER DENNIS & ASSOCIATES
(PARISH SOCIAL OUTREACH)
the community and then provide services to help them
maintain their housing and thrive.
Founded in 1977, New Hope Housing is a non-profit
agency in Northern Virginia committed to finding creative
and lasting solutions to end the cycle of homelessness by
offering homeless men, women and children the services
they need to change their lives and succeed. Each of these
success stories adds to a stronger, healthier community for
all. Its vision is “a home and bright future for every man,
woman and child in our community.” It is the oldest and
largest provider of shelter beds in Northern Virginia. New
Hope Housing is community-based, welcomes all, treats
each individual with dignity and respect, is an effective
steward of its human and financial resources, and a
competent and dedicated staff is critical to its mission.
In line with providing not only shelter but also the tools to
build a better life, the core of New Hope Housing services
for residents is built around education, employment, debt
reduction, and life skills as the means to obtain and
maintain housing. Many residents work with individually
assigned case managers to develop Individual Service
Plans, designed to address the resident’s immediate crisis
needs and to outline steps toward housing. Residents are
also provided on-site alcohol/drug services; mental health
assistance; medical/dental services; educational assessment,
counseling; life skills classes; recreational, social and
cultural programming; employment assessment, job skill
training placement, job search and job placement help; and
a children’s services program. Referral to public services in
the community, both on-site at New Hope Housing
locations and in the community, are used extensively.
New Hope Housing operates six emergency shelter
programs providing 179 shelter beds year-round plus an
additional 47 beds during winter months. During extreme
cold or hot weather, there is a “no turn-away” policy. The
shelter programs first provide safe, decent, and welcoming
housing along with nutritious meals. The goal is to rapidly
re-house residents into appropriate affordable housing in
Brother Dennis wishes to contribute $1,600 to New Hope
Housing to assist in its work with homeless families and
individuals in Northern Virginia.
