An old Japanese proverb states that “one kind word
can warm three winter months.” We can’t promise
that the words contained in our winter issue will actually lift the seasonal temperatures, but the stories
they tell should suffuse you with a benevolent glow.
Our City Spotlight section drops in on a revitalized,
regenerated St. John’s; Weekender takes to the
glittering slopes of our winter ski destination, Mont
Tremblant; Skate Canada CEO William Thompson,
our Frequent Flyer interviewee, talks up Canada’s
medal chances at the Vancouver Olympics; and we
go behind the scenes at the Hike Metal boatyard
as the Toronto Port Authority’s new passenger ferry,
bringing Porter flyers to Toronto City Centre Airport
in enhanced comfort, is constructed.
As if all that weren’t as cockle-warming as a

A mere 200 years or so after setting the template for East Coast WASP style, this US
menswear giant has decided that it’s finally time for Canada to get prepped up. Bay
Street businessmen can now choose their iconic look off the peg, from Jay Gatsby to
JFK via Mad Men’s Don Draper, or – for the fatally fashion-forward – Pee Wee Herman
by way of Thom Browne’s oops-it-shrunk-in-the-wash Black Fleece line. This is one
American invasion that will be welcomed with open blazer-clad arms.

How does the Double Deuce distinguish
itself from the also-rans in the everexpanding Queen West bar scene? By
targeting its casual ambience toward
locals – in a where-everybody-knowsyour-name-and-they’re-always-gladyou-came kind of way – and leaving its
trendy neighbours to cater to the influx
of 905ers. Hearty fare (beef brisket sandwiches) and an expansive beer list (Pabst
Blue Ribbon to Blanche de Chambly)
should help to ensure brand loyalty.

thread running through all the city’s

Harbord. The apotheosis here is the
siphon coffee, which takes three
minutes to prepare, but whose light,
pure flavour has addicts gibbering.

Torontonians swear by their street
vendors and smog dogs, but sometimes you want a little wonder in your
wiener, and that’s where the west
end’s Buddha Dog comes in. These
mini franks (around three inches long)
luxuriate inside house-made buns and
are draped in gourmet toppings and
sauces (running the gourmand gamut
from pepper jelly to Jamaican jerk).
They can’t promise enlightenment
in every bite, but they can at least get
you on the road to Nirvana.

This puckish bar aims to put the sass into sushi and draw fashionable foodies to the
Byward Market with its modish mix of Asian fusion dishes, whimsical cocktails and
outré decor. The dining room is upscale, the presentation is Damien Hirst-meets-Jeff
Koons inside a kaleidoscope, and the service is about the only thing that’s kink-free.
The perfect place to get your wasabi wobbled, your sashimi subverted and your
teriyaki tweaked.
Ce restaurant vise à donner un peu de piment aux sushi et il attire les amateurs branchés au Byward Market avec son mélange de plats asiatiques fusion, ses cocktails
fantasques et sa déco outrancière. La salle à manger très haut de gamme est un peu
comme si Damien Hirst rencontrait Jeff Koons dans un kaléidoscope et le service est
sans doute la seule chose qui semble normale. Idéal pour faire trembler votre wasabi,
subvertir le sashimi et raffiner le teryaki.

The city’s gourmands were bereft when
this cozy upscale eatery peremptorily
closed its doors. But now the salivating
can stop – brothers Ross and Simon Fraser have reconvened in bigger, broader,
better premises around the corner, and
New Edinburgh residents can thrill all the
more to their expanded palette of local,
seasonal delicacies. For the most audacious of treats, the Kitchen’s Choice –
which could be anything from the spryest scallops to the liveliest lentils – takes
some beating.

orphelins lorsque ce refuge tranquille de
la bonne chère a fermé ses portes. Le
deuil est fini depuis que les frères Ross

Craving some collard greens? Hankering after hominy grits? There was
a time when Canucks would have to
hotfoot it over the border in search of
genuine, old-fashioned soul food, or
settle for a lumpen slab of fast-food
fried chicken. As luck would have it,
Jean Albert’s has finally arrived to fill
the void. Deep Southern expat LeRoy
Walden serves up his grandmother’s
down-home recipes with style, with
skill, and – most crucially – with soul.

Aunt Olive’s
Imagine an eccentric dowager’s attic
with an ace café attached. That’s the ambience conjured by Aunt Olive’s, where
coffee bar and vintage store cohabit to
charmingly idiosyncratic effect. Kick
back with a book and some homemade
soup amid the 70s furniture and random
tchotchkes before trying on a vintage
flapper dress and an eclectic mix of costume jewellery. The only things missing
are the big wet auntie-kisses and the
exclamations as to how much you’ve
grown since your previous visit.

There are bookshops, there are designer bookshops, and then, in the case of
Librissime, there are bookshops so haute couture, they might as well be made out
of Komodo dragon skin and kookaburra feathers. Specializing in high-concept,
limited-edition volumes by posh publishers, each book is treated like a work of art;
reverently displayed, handled with soft white gloves and cooed over by connoisseurs.

à sept (aka happy hour). At sundown, Suite 701 morphs
seamlessly into Old Montréal’s liveliest hot spot, buzzing

Firmdale Hotels’ first foreign outpost.
Located on a fittingly tranquil street
in SoHo, the Crosby’s 86 individually
designed rooms mix subtle-not-shouty
modernism with artful-not-gaudy prints
and patterns. There are huge windows to
aid contemplation, and refined bathroom
amenities by British perfumer Miller Harris
to keep upper lips suitably rigid.

The stroller-jams are a sure sign that a cool,
quirky new food store has landed in Brooklyn’s
Park Slope. Larder flaunts a cannily curated
array of premium foodstuffs from around the
world – Spanish cookies, covetable salts,
artisanal sodas, exotic preserves (the bloodorange and pomegranate doesn’t lack for
pep), cured meats and a whole maison’sworth of fromage (courtesy of the in-house
cheesemonger). Sandwiches are made to
order (or should that be ordr?) on the premises.

If the lightning bolt adorning its facade
doesn’t alert you to the fact that the Wit is
more skittish than the average boutique
hotel, then the wake-up calls from local
comedians, toilet rolls patterned with Rodin’s The Thinker, and warm chocolatechip cookies at check-in should put the
matter beyond doubt. But the well-appointed gym and yoga studio, plus destination in-house restaurants (note the
roaring fire at the 27th-floor Roof lounge)
add some gumption to the mad gaiety.

like homemade goat sausage and smoked Sardinian sheep’s milk cheese are
testament to their painstaking attention to detail, as is the mural adorning the wall
– a starburst of buttons that must have left a whole thrift store fastener-free.

Aaron Levenson, Porter’s duty officer, on planning, programming,
planespotting...and pigeons. Aaron Levenson est agent de service
chez Porter. Il est expert en programmation, avions...et pigeons.
I’ve recently been promoted from dispatch to duty officer.
What does that entail? I’m in charge of running the entire
back-of-house day-to-day operational schedule. I oversee the
dispatchers, who look after flight planning, air traffic control,
fuel planning, anything that concerns the planes themselves;
operation coordinators, who look after the commercial side
of things; and the crew schedulers, who organize the crew
logistics. I’m basically the one who endeavours to keep
things running as smoothly as possible in the face of a lot
of variables.
I was a dispatcher for Porter for about three years. The
dispatchers release the flight plan to the crew, and they’ll
then do something called flightwatch, where they’ll monitor
the flight for unexpected weather conditions or anything that
occurs after the preplanning stage, and advise the captains
accordingly. As duty officer, I have to be able to think on my feet
and deal with all kinds of random issues. It’s not like that movie
Pushing Tin – it’s never as dramatic as that – but there’ll be

de service. Quel est mon rôle ? Je suis chargé de la gestion
quotidienne de la programmation. Je supervise les contrôleurs
qui ont la charge des plans de vol, du trafic aérien, du carburant
et tout ce qui concerne les avions; les coordinateurs des
opérations qui s’occupent de l’aspect commercial et les
planificateurs d’équipages qui sont chargés de la logistique
des équipages. En bref, je m’efforce de faire en sorte que
tout se déroule sans accrocs dans un environnement pleins
d’impondérables.
J’ai été contrôleur chez Porter pendant trois ans. Les
contrôleurs communiquent le plan de vol à l’équipage. Ils suivent
ensuite le vol au cas où le temps changerait subitement et pour
tout événement imprévu dont ils avisent le commandant. En
tant qu’agent de service, je dois savoir réagir vite afin de faire
face à toutes sortes de problèmes. Ce n’est pas comme dans
le film Les Aiguilleurs – rien n’est aussi dramatique, mais il y a
des échanges constants entre l’équipe et moi : « Peut-on faire
some back-and-forth between me and the team on shift: “Can
we do this? What’s best for the passenger? How will it impact
on the crew?” If you look like you’re getting into what’s called
a ground delay program, which is where air traffic control has
to reduce the amount of traffic, that will have a knock-on effect
on your connections, crew transfers, and everything else. The
most important qualities for this job? A cool head for sure, and
the ability to multitask. You’ve got to be thinking three, four
steps ahead all the time. You won’t always be right. And yeah,
I’m the one everyone blames if that turns out to be the case.
But, as a previous boss of mine said, you’re either going to be
the statue or the pigeon.
I can pinpoint the exact moment when I realized I wanted
to be involved in the aviation business. I was 14 or 15, and
I went to the Toronto Air Show. I was so into watching the
aircraft, I was in a trance. The minute after I left the show I
decided that airplanes had to be my life. I started working at
air shows myself, meeting people and making connections.
There are probably only about 200 dispatchers in the whole
of Canada, and it takes dedication and persistence to get into
it. I took a York University course, with exams in meteorology
and flight operations. My first job was at the Island Airport,
with a company called Paladin, dispatching flight medevacs
(medical evacuations). Then I came over to Porter when it was
starting up, even before they had any planes. So I know pretty
much everybody in the company, which is great, because I’m
always talking to a lot of people from the tower, and it’s always
better to relay your issues and concerns if you have a personal
relationship with the people you’re dealing with.
I am a big airplane geek. Every time a plane goes overhead, I
look up and check it out – I can usually tell what type and series it
is. I still go to air shows in my spare time. And on the weekends,
I might go up to Pearson and watch the planes taking off. So
the idea of working with planes every day? And getting paid for
it? Great. I’d like to stay hands-on with the planes as long as
possible. If I’m travelling by plane, I tend to sit there and think
about everything that’s going on behind the scenes to get the
flight off and get it to its destination on time. I feel more confident
about the whole process, because I know how hard people are
working to ensure that everything passes off without a hitch.

constamment anticiper. On se trompe parfois, et bien entendu
dans ce cas, tout le monde m’en attribue la responsabilité. Mais
comme disait un de mes anciens patrons, ont est soit le pigeon,
soit la statue.
Je me rappelle exactement quand j’ai décidé de faire carrière
dans l’aviation. Je devais avoir 14 ou 15 ans et je suis allé au
Toronto Air Show. J’observais les avions avec tant d’intensité
que j’étais dans une sorte de transe. En sortant de là, j’ai décidé
que les avions seraient ma vie. J’ai ensuite collaboré à de tels
événements pour rencontrer des gens, me faire des relations.
Comme il y a seulement quelque 200 contrôleurs dans tout
le Canada, ce n’est pas un métier facile d’accès. J’ai étudié
à l’université de York où j’ai passé des examens en météo
et opérations de vol. Mon premier emploi, à Island Airport,
consistait à guider des vols Medevacs pour la société Paladin.
Puis, je suis entré chez Porter, dès ses débuts. Il n’y avait pas
encore d’avions. Alors je connais presque tout le monde ici, ce
qui est pratique car je dois contacter beaucoup de personnes
depuis la tour de contrôle. C’est mieux d’avoir une relation
personnelle pour communiquer votre message ou en cas de
problème imprévu.
Je suis un vrai passionné. À chaque fois qu’un avion passe, je
lève le nez pour voir de quel type il s’agit. Pendant mes loisirs je
vais à des rencontres aériennes. Les fins de semaine, il m’arrive
d’aller à Pearson pour regarder décoller les avions. Alors l’idée
de travailler quotidiennement avec des avions et d’être payé
pour ça ? Super, non ? Je voudrais continuer à m’occuper des
avions de près le plus longtemps possible. Si je prends l’avion, je
pense à tout ce qui se passe en coulisses pour permettre au vol
d’atteindre sa destination à l’heure. J’ai confiance, parce que je
sais que de nombreuses personnes font le maximum pour faire
en sorte que tout se passe comme sur des roulettes.

“Regeneration” is sometimes a synonym for a lick of paint and
a lot of crossed fingers, but renewal really is in the air in St.
John’s. It may be the oldest continually inhabited settlement in
Canada – it was founded in the mid-16th century – but more
recently its downtown has been languishing. Today, however,
Water Street, the city’s main artery, is a buzzing thoroughfare
of homespun retail innovation, bars and restaurants. Alberta
and Texas licence plates around town may confirm Newfoundland and Labrador’s oil-producing status, but St. John’s transformation has less to do with new money than old values, as
expat Newfoundlanders return home to open traditional-yetinnovative bars and boutiques. Add generous government
investment to this thriving community of entrepreneurs and
locavores, and the signs are that St. John’s is all set to embark
on a new and exciting chapter in its long and illustrious story.

of Portugal Cove. St. John’s-born chef
Jeremy Charles partners with nearby
farms and is serious about drawing on
the regional bounty. How serious? A
recent tasting menu even included
mushrooms foraged by Charles himself.
The Beach House offers a lovely suite of
rooms for those who have delved a bit
too deeply into the wine list.

Twisted Sisters Boutik
Tennille Ashley and Jaclyn Gruchy really
are sisters; their relative twistiness is
expressed by means of their inventory
of accessories, jewellery and the odd
home decorating object. The focus is
largely, though not exclusively, on Canadian products, and eco-friendly wares
feature prominently. Treasures include
colourful aprons and oven mitts by
Vancouver’s Astrosatchel and greeting
cards and stationery from Winnipeg’s
Kate & Birdie. The shop is bold, with an
aesthetic that is girly but not at all frilly.

Gingersnap
Owners Janet Murphy and Nancy DayHoward built Gingersnap’s idiosyncratic
inventory by asking stylish people on the
street where they bought their clothes.
Thankfully, enough parents of fashionforward kids in New York and Montréal
spilled the beans, and the store is filled
with a dizzying range of child-centric
goodies, from the cheap-and-cheerful
(sparkly non-toxic nail polish) to the
big-ticket and covetable (Monte Design
Group nursing chairs). Many of the goods
are Canadian-made, and no child leaves
without a lollipop, parental injunctions
notwithstanding.

The Bookery on Signal Hill
Every bit as inviting as its name suggests,
The Bookery is the only independent
bookstore in St. John’s focused on new
titles. The art, architecture and baking
sections are particularly strong and
owner Russell Floren strives to carry
every Newfoundland-related book in
print. The part bookstore, part café is
housed in the oldest surviving structure
in the city, a hipped-roof house built for
a sergeant in 1804.

I moved from Stockholm to St. John’s six
years ago. I love it here. The weather is
reminiscent of home but the pace is more
restful. It’s also been a great place to start
a business. There is lots of support for
local initiatives, and the downtown area
continues to regenerate.

of art buyers in St. John’s. They come to

The crowning glory of St. John’s – the
vertiginous Signal Hill – bespeaks its
storied past as a strategic military and
communications post. The final North
American battle of the Seven Years’
War was fought here in 1762; Guglielmo
Marconi received the first transatlantic
wireless signal here in 1901; and the site
was a WWII military post. Walk the paths
today for resplendent views of St. John’s

It’s also one of the few sports where all the effort you
put in is supposed to look effortless. Dave Pelletier,
the 2002 Olympic champion, likened it to being told
to run the 1,500 metres with a smile on your face.
We have real medal contenders in all disciplines for the Vancouver Olympics. Who to look
out for? Patrick Chan, for sure. He’s only 18 and already a World Championship silver medallist. Then
there is Joannie Rochette, who I think is one of the
most underrated women in the world. Virtue and
Moir are definite gold contenders. They were injured
all of last season, had almost no time to prepare, and
still managed bronze at the World Championships.
Break the Ice
William Thompson, 43, is the CEO of Skate Canada, the largest figure-skating
governing body in the world. He’s been charged with bringing the country’s
skaters and ice dancers up to tip-top triple-salchow form in time for Vancouver
2010. William Thompson, 43 ans, est le PDG de Skate Canada le plus important

I’ve been in the job for three years now. Skate
Canada has a membership of 180,000 – that’s a
larger membership than the US equivalent, despite
the fact that our population is a tenth of its size. Obviously Canada is a winter sport country, and skating’s second only to hockey. Just about everyone in
Canada goes skating. It’s funny – the International
Skating Union once asked me how many ice rinks
there were in Canada. I said, you must be joking
– there are thousands upon thousands. Even the
tiniest towns have a twin pad of ice.

ri car il y en a des milliers et des milliers. Même les
petites villes ont une patinoire.
I was a skater myself, then I became an Olympic
judge, then I started working for the Federation. I’ve
seen the sport from both sides and at every level,
from local to elite. I was a national-level pair skater,
so I know what they go through; my main memory
of those years is endless training. I stopped at 17;
I knew what my limitations were as an athlete.
J’ai moi-même patiné, puis je suis devenu juge
olympique et ensuite j’ai travaillé pour la Fédération.
J’ai vu le sport des deux côtés et à tous les niveaux,
du club local à l’élite. J’ai atteint le niveau national en
couple alors je sais de quoi il retourne. Je me rappelle
qu’il fallait s’entraîner sans arrêt. J’ai arrêté à 17 ans,
je connaissais mes limites en tant que sportif.
One thing we’re emphasizing now is the athleticism of skating. You know, these guys skate
faster than most hockey players, jump higher than
most basketball players, and fall harder than most
football players – and they don’t have padding.

I travel a lot with the national team. I fly between
75,000 and 100,000 miles a year. For international
flights, I get my book and my noise-cancelling headphones and I get my head down. It’s always go-gogo between family and work, so I like to indulge in
some serious me time when I have the chance.
It’s the convenience of Porter that’s such a
boon. I mostly do the Toronto-Ottawa route; our
head office is in the latter, but we do a lot of our marketing, sponsorship and web initiatives out of the
Toronto office. It’s easy to change flights, you don’t
have to be there hours beforehand – it’s like flying
used to be. It’s great to find an airline you can trust.
The level of service is significantly better than most
of the large airlines. I’ve been ahead of schedule
more than anything. You can walk from our Toronto
office to Toronto City Centre Airport in 15 minutes.
Flying in from Ottawa, you can arrive half an hour
before the meeting and still have time to pick up a
Starbucks on the way downtown.
I have a four-year-old daughter. She’s just about
to start to learn how to skate. We’re not intending to
fast-track her through an intensive training program.
If she likes it, that’s great; if not, I won’t be worried.

alors j’aime me consacrer un peu de temps quand
j’en ai l’opportunité.
Porter et son aspect si pratique est une bénédiction. De Toronto, je me rends souvent à Ottawa,
où se trouve notre siège, mais nous faisons une
bonne partie de notre marketing, parrainage et initiatives Internet en dehors de Toronto. Les correspondances sont si pratiques qu’il n’y a pas besoin d’arriver des heures à l’avance. C’est génial d’avoir une
compagnie à qui on peut faire confiance. Le service
est bien meilleur que sur les grandes compagnies
aériennes. Je suis souvent en avance. Notre bureau
de Toronto est à 15 minutes à pied de Toronto City
Centre Airport. En venant d’Ottawa, je peux arriver
juste une demi-heure avant ma réunion et j’ai quand
même le temps de boire un Starbucks en chemin.
Ma fille a 4 ans. Elle va apprendre à patiner. Je ne
veux pas lui faire suivre un programme intensif. Si
cela lui plaît, tant mieux; sinon, tant pis.
Les journaux vont jusqu’à dire que le podium
doit nous appartenir à Vancouver 2010. Il y a
de telles attentes. Ce serait une légitimation de nos
efforts si cela arrivait, mais nous voyons plus loin que
les Jeux; je veux avoir un gros réservoir d’athlètes.
Nous mettons en place un nouveau modèle de
développement à long terme, dont le but est de
développer le patinage parallèlement aux sciences
du sport. Nous améliorons aussi notre système de
chasse aux jeunes talents. La matière première ne
manque pas; il faut juste tout rassembler.
The papers have been saying that we have to
own the podium at Vancouver 2010. There is that
level of expectation. I guess it would be vindication
for us if it happened, but we’re looking beyond the
Olympics; I want to have a deeper pool of athletes.
We’re introducing a new, long-term athlete development model, and its goal will be to bring on skating
skills and sports science side-by-side. We’re also
improving our scouting so that we don’t lose out on
talent. We’ve got an abundance of raw material; we
just have to put it all together.

Let’s face it: there’s a reason celebrities such as Michael Douglas,
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tommy Hilfiger have flocked to
Mont Tremblant for years. It is, quite simply, magnificent. Until
recently, the French Canadian ski town was hard to get to,
requiring a 90-minute drive from Montréal through rural, and
largely unlit, Québec (those traveaux are nothing to mess with).
But between December and April, Porter runs seasonal flights
to the recently renovated Mont Tremblant International Airport,
meaning you can log in a half day at the office and be fireside
with a cup of cocoa by evening.

Tucked into Québec’s Laurentian Mountains
and overlooking the expansive Lake Tremblant, the
region of Mont Tremblant includes two peaks – Mont
Tremblant and Mont Blanc – and three villages. It’s
a four-season destination, but without a doubt, the
best time of year to visit is winter. The mountains
are covered in thick snow, the revamped Mont
Tremblant ski resort is in full swing, and the mood
throughout the villages and across the candycoloured rooftops that mark the wooden buildings
of the Mont Tremblant pedestrian village is reminiscent of everyone’s favourite Julie Andrews film.
Mont Blanc, the Laurentians’ second-highest
peak, is best suited for families, with 41 easy to
moderate trails, two snow parks and, at the base of
the mountain, an indoor playground. But the area’s
star is the majestic Mont Tremblant, consistently
ranked the best ski resort in the East. Over 620 acres
of slopes include 95 trails and three snow parks,
which cover all sides of the 875-metre mountain
and receive an average four metres of snow each
year (though Tremblant also boasts Canada’s
largest snowmaking system, just in case). Its name
is a derivative of “trembling,” but don’t let that scare
you off; there are plenty of scenic trails as well as a
ski school equipped with more than 450 capable
instructors. Lifts, or “stations,” are state of the art,
including the new Telecabine Express gondola. And
for the less slalom-minded, there’s still an abundance

d’activités de Tremblant vous propose des promenades en carriole, en raquettes et télémark, en
motoneige, en traîneau à chiens ou la collecte de la
sève d’érable. Pour la détente, rien ne vaut un bain
scandinave, attribut de la plupart des auberges,
hôtels et chalets de location de la région.
La station de Mont-Tremblant comprend trois
villages (deux autres sont en construction. Au pied
de la montagne, accessible à skis, le village piétonnier de Tremblant relie les plus luxueux complexes de
la région – Fairmont Tremblant, Westin Resort&Spa
et Wyndham Cap Tremblant. De tous ces villages,
le piétonnier est le plus récent, le plus réussi esthétiquement et souvent le plus fréquenté grâce à ses
restaurants familiaux, boutiques d’équipement de
ski, chocolatiers et autres. Les enfants adorent aussi

Au Fairmont Tremblant, au pied d’une des
remontées rapides de Tremblant, le feu qui ronfle en

rides, snowshoeing and telemarking, snowmobiling,
dog sledding and sap-tapping – the collection of sap
from maple trees – all available through the Mont
Tremblant activity centre. Or opt instead for a soak in
one of the area’s many outdoor hot tubs, a highlight
of most local inns, hotels and private chalets-for-rent.
Mont Tremblant the region is made up of three
villages. (Two additional villages are in the works.)
At the base of the mountain and accessible by ski,
the Tremblant pedestrian village connects the area’s
most luxurious resorts – including the Fairmont Tremblant, Le Westin Resort & Spa and Wyndham Cap
Tremblant. Of the villages, the pedestrian village is the
newest, most aesthetically vibrant, and most generally crowd-pleasing, with family-friendly restaurants,
shops selling skiwear and homemade chocolates,
and kid-approved features like La Source Aquaclub,
an indoor aquatic park. At the Fairmont Tremblant,
situated at the base of one of Tremblant’s high-speed
chairlifts, the fire’s always roaring and the woodsy
scent of burning logs drifts throughout the hotel.
Many rooms offer views of Lake Tremblant, and the
hotel’s new ski-in, ski-out Nansen Lounge features
casual-chic cuisine from French-trained executive
chef Daniel Tobien. Service here is impeccable, with
perhaps the best coming courtesy of Gracie, the
hotel’s resident yellow Lab, who’ll share her well-loved
plush owl with you whether you ask her to or not.
There’s plenty to do, and eat, throughout the
pedestrian village, which runs along and around
Place Saint-Bernard. Mountainside, there are
options for pre- and après fueling, including Crêperie
Catherine (more than 50 varieties), and the kitschy
Le Shack, which serves a stellar French onion soup.
Cabane à Sucre de la Montagne supplies still-warm
maple taffy from a tiny hut near the gondola, while
most cafés dish out plenty of queue de castor,
pieces of sugary dough formed into the shape of
a beaver tail and covered, in the best cases, with
a layer of locally tapped maple syrup. (Find impeccable specimens at the appropriately named
Beaver Tails.) Real sustenance, however – the sort
that’ll power a person through a long day of downhill skiing, say – is better found at the casual, if
occasionally raucous, bar and grill La Forge or the
more sophisticated Aux Truffes, where the house
specialty caribou shepherd’s pie (not to mention the
award-winning wine list, much of it sourced from
Canadian vineyards) is like salve to weary muscles.
Boutiques in the pedestrian village are heavy in ski
and après-skiwear, but worth a peek are children’s
clothier Boutique Rodin, high-end womenswear
dealer Boutique Chamonix (Metropolis, Bogner),
and unisex Canadian purveyor Roots.

exceptionnelle, dont beaucoup de vins canadiens).

For a slightly more authentic Québécois visit, the
historic village of Saint-Jovite is just a 10-minute drive
from the mountain and a world away. If you’re rusty, be
sure to pack your French-English pocket dictionary.
More than 30 shops and cafés line the quaint Rue
de Saint-Jovite, including the cozy-chic home goods
shop Plaisirs de Provence and the tiny ice cream
shop and Belgian chocolaterie Crème et Chocolat.
If you’re out this way, save room for dinner: Seb –
run by Sebastien Houle – one-ups classic Québécois
comfort food (poutine, rabbit stew) in an upscale, laidback setting and regularly plays host to the town’s
who’s who, including the Douglas Zeta-Joneses.
In the original Mont Tremblant village, which still
retains a bit of a quaint Alps-like feel with many
private residences and traditional dining spots like
La Savoie, famed for its selection of French-Canadian
favourite, fondue, the new is slowly creeping in.
The best comes in the form of Jardin d’Hiver, a
home accessories store and art gallery perched
on a hill overlooking the village centre that features
works from local Canadian artists. Of course, what’s
winter sporting without time spent snuggling around
a fire by night, cold brew in hand (call it après-aprèsski)? Do that at dive bar Le P’tit Caribou, where
the locals are known to dance on the tabletops, or
Microbrasserie La Diable, where the bartenders are
friendly and the devil-themed microbrews housemade. Make like a Québécois and drink up: at Mont
Tremblant, you’re always in for a long weekend.

Bien entendu, les sports d’hiver n’en valent la peine
que si l’on passe aussi une soirée au coin du feu, une
bière fraîche en main (c’est l’après après-ski). Quelques bonnes adresses : le bar Le P’tit Caribou, où
les locaux dansent parfois sur les tables, et la Microbrasserie La Diable, où les barmen sympas servent
des bières maison diaboliques. Faites comme les
Québécois : videz votre verre, à Mont-Tremblant, la
fin de semaine dure longtemps.

That seems like a pretty big car deck, doesn’t it? It’s mainly for those
vehicles servicing the airport, and that includes the occasional cement
mixer or garbage truck. That’s why there is so much height clearance. But
you will be travelling on the upper deck. Le pont des véhicules a l’air plutôt

Andy Stanton was five when his family
emigrated from England to Canada and
before long he was making model boats
as a hobby. It was no surprise to anyone
when shipbuilding became his trade.
Stanton has been at the helm of Hike
Metal since 1980. Andy Stanton avait
5 ans lorsque sa famille anglaise est
arrivée au Canada. Bien vite, il s’est mis
à faire des maquettes de bateaux. Pas
étonnant dès lors, qu’il ait fait carrière
dans un chantier naval. Stanton est à la
barre de Hike Metal depuis 1980.
If you are flying with us you probably already appreciate the
convenience of our home at Toronto City Centre Airport. But
there is a small matter of its being on an island. The ferry journey
takes barely a minute, but we are very excited about the Toronto
Port Authority’s new vessel that will guarantee an even easier
ride. For that you can thank Andy Stanton and his team at the
Hike Metal yard in Wheatley, southern Ontario. Nearly nine
months after the keel was laid, the new ferry – the bottom layer of
it anyway – was lowered into the water on September 10th 2009,
and that same afternoon the superstructure was fitted neatly on
top. While its hull measures the same as its predecessor – over
30 metres long with a beam of 11.5 metres – the passenger
deck is twice as large. This new ferry can get you on and off
and on your way faster. The crew will be happy too: aside from
a new hull profile constructed to handle ice in winter, the ferry
has the latest fly-by-wire technology and two wheelhouses
(one for going out, the other for returning). Andy and his
guys at Hike Metal know what they are doing: some of the Maids
of the Mist tour boats at Niagara Falls are theirs, as are the City
of Chicago’s Fireboats. They make hovercraft too, but for the
purpose of getting you to and from our Toronto digs that may
have been a bit too fancy. Even for us.

Toronto qui permettra un trajet encore plus facile. Pour cela, il

construction de la quille, le nouveau traversier – au moins la coque

(une pour l’aller, l’autre pour le retour). L’équipe de Hike Metal
connaît son travail : c’est elle qui a fourni quelques-uns des Maids
of the Mist, les bateaux des chutes du Niagara et les Fireboats de
Chicago. Et elle fabrique aussi des hovercrafts mais cela aurait
été un peu exagéré. Même pour nous.

connect to two drive-legs at each end of the vessel
and to propellers made of a special alloy supplied
by Rolls-Royce. Ce n’est pas un marshmallow,

won’t be any glitches as they lower the
superstructure onto the main hull of the
new ferry. Sure enough, all the pins find
their holes and suddenly a ferry is born.

There is no margin for error at Hike. The challenge
was to deliver a hull profile similar to the former City
Airport ferry that could fit into the existing slip with

When delivery day arrives, the ferry will
nose its way down this channel to the
waters of Lake Erie for its 360km journey
to Toronto on Lake Ontario. That means
taking it through Canada’s Welland Canal and its eight locks just west of Niagara Falls. Au jour de la livraison, le traversier descendra le chenal jusqu’au lac

It’s not quite champagne time, but months after the
keel-laying, the hull is finally lowered into the waters at Hike Metal. It’s always a delicate business
putting a new baby into the bath, so to speak, but
those straps are made of Kevlar. They never snap!
