A WORLD OF DANCE IN OTTAWA UNIQUE AU MONDE, LA DANSE À OTTAWA Cathy Levy, Dance Producer, Productrice de la Danse The season ahead will explore ideas of myth, history, collaboration, and dedication; it will pay homage to great creators and introduce cultures unknown. It will feature new creations and co-productions as well as many Ottawa firsts. It will honour Canadian creators as well as those from eight other countries, including Argentina, Slovakia, and Australia. It will be humorous and intense, lyrical and theatrical, innovative and entertaining. I encourage you to see a company you don’t know and enjoy those you do. You are a lively and devoted public, and I thank you for all your feedback and participation over these last years. The world of dance is at your doorstep: A World of Dance in Ottawa. FRONT COVER/PAGE DE COUVERTURE Shen Wei Dance Ar ts, Re–. Dance is a magical force: it can connect to one’s heart and soul like a beautiful song or a touching story. Through its largely non-verbal format, it can speak universally to both simple and complex themes, enriching our experience and our lives. Dance can be pleasurable, but it can also be compelling and engaging… even confronting. Music is also a huge motivator – music not only affects the way we dance, it affects the way we see. Limitation is also very important. There are two lines of inquiry that are constantly twisting and bending each other. One line is curiosity and discovery, the other is a series of limitations. Both lines serve the work. All of that bending and twisting will eventually produce something new.” Like Crystal, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a huge creative force in contemporary dance. A protégé of Alain Platel – Artistic Director of Belgium’s Les Ballets C. de la B. – Sidi Larbi stormed into the European consciousness with his first major work, Rien de Rien, in 2000. While the link to Platel’s provocative, layered work is evident, Sidi Larbi quickly developed a distinctive voice. His fascination with ancient music, ritual, stereotype, and identity blend into colossal landscapes of human joy and anguish. Each performance reveals through the body the compelling nature of the human spirit. For centuries, artists have been both defining and reflecting society in their explorations. Contemporary choreographers explore life’s many layers through dance, often with startling and profound results. Each performance reveals through the body the compelling nature of the human spirit. I have the great good fortune to present choreographers from around the world at the NAC. Over time, audiences witness the evolution of their styles and can create a greater context in which to appreciate their œuvres. Our commitment to dance artists includes NAC co-productions, where we contribute financially to the creation costs of developing a work. This season we see five co-productions, including Myth, by Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (in October) and new work by Canadian Crystal Pite (in April). Vancouverite Crystal Pite is one artist whose work moves me deeply, and one with whom I hope to work for many years to come. I first saw her choreography in the early 1990s and was immediately struck by her precision and grace, her audacity and charm; a compelling and dynamic dancer herself, she had an innate understanding of space, time, and music, finding new energies in the bodies with which she worked. Crystal relocated to Frankfurt in 1996, where she danced with the world-acclaimed William Forsythe for five years. Her talent, tenacity, and individuality shone, and it was only a matter of time before Crystal’s choreographic wings took flight. Crystal is now in great demand, leading her own Vancouver-based company, Kidd Pivot, as well as preparing commissions for companies worldwide. She is one of our inaugural NAC Associate Dance Artists, and we have been delighted to welcome several of her projects to the NAC, including this season’s world premiere. I asked Crystal about her creative process and about what influences her when she is choreographing. “Creativity does not manifest itself (for me) as a big flash of inspiration. Creativity is just a lot of work, done regularly and diligently. It’s not romantic or mysterious…it’s about being curious and observant and focused. I always feel terror when I start a new creation…trying to work in spite of [that fear] is a skill in itself. Ultimately, though, creating gives me energy and joy. It’s a heightened state of seeing, listening, feeling. It’s where I’m at my happiest. A fascinating performer himself, we have seen in his collaborative work (zero degrees, D’Avant) a soul unbarred, a stunning presence with gripping talent. Now based in Antwerp, Sidi Larbi has created pieces for numerous companies, including this year’s collaboration in China with the Buddhist Shaolin monks. Sidi Larbi writes that his first dalliance with art “was not dance, but drawing…as a child I wanted to draw reality and images I associated with it. But I got impatient – the two dimensions were not enough. Then I started dancing…you have to dance constantly to see the drawing. Dance is always a temporary drawing – it disappears when the movement ends. Each performance has to be drawn again the next evening.” * Sidi Larbi is fascinated with the question of equality between individuals, cultures, languages, and means of expression. His works are rich explorations of big themes, fervent modules laced together in surprising combinations. His originality and innovation lie in his adept means of linking contemporary expression with tradition: his use of text, narrative, music, and movement hurl the viewer through a cacophony of different worlds and cultures. He transforms theatrical space into a world where cultural differences are brought to light and intercultural exchange is key. “In every working process, intuitive, emotional choices are made, and then what you are doing is trying to extract sense out of nonsense. The nonsensical things in life, or the things you can’t express, you try to make sense of in your work. You look for something rational, a pattern, in irrational proposals. A performance is a sort of emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end.” * Myth has been compared to a Brueghel painting, “a pictorial encyclopedia of mainly Western myths and archetypes brought to life three dimensionally.” * Together with singer Patrizia Bovi, a master of Italian traditional music, and her ensemble Micrologus, the 21 performers unleash a flood of images, inspired by religion, the tarot, Japanese manga, and martial arts. Crystal Pite and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui are without a doubt each laying down a legacy of choreography that has enormous impact on the way we see dance today. They broaden our vision, speak to us of universal ideas, and touch our hearts. * Quotes by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui are taken from inter views with Guy Cools for Toneelhuis, Antwerp 2007. (…) With technical skills to die for and impeccable comic timing, these hair y-chested men dar t about in tights, tutus, and plus-size toe shoes, channelling an old-style Russian ballet company full of stroppy ballerinas, runaway egos, and diva glamour. The Trocks put their hear ts and souls into being “ballerinas” and the result is as affecting as it is hilarious. “By the end of the evening, you’re exhausted from laughing, not because it’s intrinsically funny to see a man in a frock...but because in all of this excess, there’s a core of absolute emotional truth.” BALLET BRITISH COLUMBIA – Canada a. With an original New Orleans-influenced jazz score by Canadian Tobin Stokes, Alleyne’s vigorous choreography pits Blanche DuBois’s faded gentility against Stanley Kowalski’s brutish animal vitality. Full of eye-catching, interlacing duets, A Streetcar Named Desire showcases the extraordinary power of dance – and the 15 supremely talented members of Ballet BC, who per form with confidence and style. “Alleyne is a choreographer of cool elegance...there is a grace and favour about his movement. Stokes’s score runs from progressive jazz riffs, to slinky strumming, to hot Dixieland…The opening night audience gave the ballet an enthusiastic response, and it is an impressive achievement.” LUKE JENNINGS, THE OBSERVER (LONDON), 2006 PAULA CITRON, THE GLOBE AND MAIL, 2006 BALLET BRITISH COLUMBIA – Canada A Streetcar Named Desire Mardi 28 avril 2009 Salle Southam 20 h 3 a Awakenings Tuesday, October 28, 2008 Southam Hall 8:00 p.m. Global dance phenomenon Bangarra has soul -- blending 40,000 years of Australian Aboriginal culture with contemporar y dance in a power ful onstage language. » a. Fluid, fierce, almost brutal choreography by Ar tistic Director Rodrigo Pederneiras is complemented by a cutting-edge original score by Lenine, stark black-tile set design, and geometric black-and-white costumes. The gorgeous dancers collide, push, shake, rise, and fall, barely sur viving in a nether world of aggression and alienation. Thir teen dancers in the internationally-acclaimed Körper (Bodies) explore morality, immor tality, the inner human body, and its outer shell in an extraordinarily rich variety of movement. Körper unfolds in a series of stark and mesmerizing scenarios as semi-nude bodies overlap, intertwine, and separate in a series of hypnotic friezes, a visceral tangle of humanity. Funny, tragic, preposterous, repulsive – Körper has the look of surrealism and the feeling of a dream. Note: Mature themes, nudity. “What a mistake it would have been to miss out on Sasha Waltz…[Körper] reveals not only Waltz’s gift for stagecraft but also her eye for the truly creepy. Dance leaves a mark, after all. Art survives, creativity triumphs.” It’s in the air in British Columbia. In spring 2009, Canada’s National Ar ts Centre will present 600 ar tists from all ar tistic disciplines on the stages of the nation’s capital: it’s BC Scene from April 21 to May 3. BC Scene will celebrate a dynamic culture that is the fusion of traditional and contemporar y, East and West, and established and emerging ar tists. With over 90 events, BC Scene will present a vast living por trait of the province, capturing its edgy creativity and palpable energy. » 24 1.866.850.ARTS | 613.947.7000 GARTH A.
