Singaporean Hotel Industry Growth to Continue
Singaporean Hotel Industry
Growth to Continue after
Recovery
Continued growth is expected in Singapore’s hotel industry
after a slump in the wake of the global financial crisis.
According to Timetric, Singapore’s hotel market value has
expanded at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 10.96%
since 2008. This is due to a recovery in tourist inflows
during 2010-2011. Timetric forecasts that revenue in the
Singaporean hotel industry is expected to reach US$6.7 billion
by 2017. This is due to an increase in tourism volumes, rising
levels of disposable income and more competitive prices for
accommodation.
As a major business hub, Singapore is especially exposed to
the global business cycle, experiencing surges in business
travel during high growth periods and suffers declines during
crisis periods. In the wake of the global financial
crisis Singapore experienced a decline in the number of
tourists. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council in
2012, it accounted for 11.3% of the country’s GDP and
comprised 9.1% of its total employment. Key growth drivers for
tourism to 2017 will be sound economic conditions, rising
levels of consumer confidence and government initiatives to
increase domestic tourism.
New innovative initiatives will drive tourism in the future
“We have to look beyond mere numbers and make a strategic
shift towards quality tourism,” says Chew Choon Seng, chairman
of the Singapore Tourism Board in its 2012 annual report.
“This will emphasize hospitality, service standards,
innovative developments and rejuvenation of older attractions,
with the aim of offering visitors and experience that will
commensurate with higher expectations.”

Airlines
Mobile App
Expands
Adds new features; mobile boarding pass scanning to be
available at all U.S. locations
CHICAGO, July, 2013 — United Airlines today announced
refreshed applications for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry 10
that include streamlined user interfaces along with a new
feature, also available on Windows Phone 8, which will enable
customers to manage their travel in real time during irregular
flight operations.
With the new feature, United mobile app users who experience
flight delays or cancellations will be offered the option to
keep their existing itinerary or, where available, the ability
to change to a new itinerary. Customers whose flights are
affected may use the mobile app to accept new flights
that United has automatically confirmed or search for
alternate routes, airports and dates of travel.
“United continues to invest in mobile technology that improves
the travel experience for our customers,” said Scott
Wilson, United’s vice president of merchandising and
ecommerce. “The new features and updated look of these apps
give travelers increased convenience, flexibility and
control. United will continue to invest in building powerful
mobile tools for our customers with many significant
enhancements scheduled to roll out over the next year.”
Separately, the airline also announced plans to make mobile
boarding pass scanning available at all of the more than 220
domestic airports it serves by the fall of this
year. United was the first U.S. airline to introduce mobile
boarding passes in 2007, and it is the first mainline carrier
to announce that it plans to make the service available at all
of the domestic airports it serves. United also offers mobile
boarding passes at over 40 international locations.

New edition of Meeting Point
Cologne 2013/2014 – Cologne
Convention
Bureau
(CCB)
builds on the key industry
sectors
strategy
of
the
German
Convention
Bureau
(GCB)
The Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) has
published a new edition of the Meeting Point Cologne manual
for event planners. The new Meeting Point Cologne, which is
now available, gives meeting planners comprehensive yet
concise information about Cologne as a congress and conference
destination. The brochure, which is almost 130 pages long,
provides an overview of Cologne’s convention infrastructure as
well as many interesting facts about the city in both German
and English.
In terms of the content of the new brochure, the CCB builds on
the key industry sectors strategy of the German Convention
Bureau (GCB), emphasizing Cologne’s strengths as a science and
economic hub. Both of these areas of expertise are
increasingly relevant to international congress organizers
when they choose the destination for their event. In addition
to a clear presentation of Cologne’s science landscape, the
brochure includes an interview with the dean of the University
of Cologne, Prof. Dr. Axel Freimuth, in which he talks about
the excellence status of the university and the new horizons
this opens up for the city. In another conversation Frank
Bartels, the head of event and travel management for the REWE
Group, explains why his company and Cologne have been a
perfect team for a long time.
In keeping with the theme of the year for the Kölner
Wissenschaftsrunde (Cologne’s science round table), the topic
of aerospace is a common thread that runs through the new
Meeting Point Cologne. The five-member CCB team got into the
spirit of the year’s theme by venturing into a space capsule
dressed as astronauts for a photo shoot at the European
Astronaut Centre (ESA/EAC).
The concept for the design of the new Meeting Point relies
more on images than previous editions. Through this fresh,
modern imagery, Cologne’s unique atmosphere will be made more
vivid to the reader. In this way, the brochure serves as a
practical tool, but it also has an attractive magazine-like
character.
In addition to the section concerning Cologne’s image,
congress organizers will find a great deal of concrete
information about some 100 locations and service providers,
including conference facilities, catering services and
providers of supporting programmes.
The new Meeting Point Cologne is available now and can be
ordered for free from [email protected]. It is also
available as an e-brochure at www.conventioncologne.de. Here
you can also access further and continuously updated
information about location and service partners using the
online meeting planner.
Koksijde-Oostduinkerke: Une
On y

patrimoine Paul Delvaux & George Grard : « En toute
d’amis.
Centre culturel Casino Koksijde

Croatian Oasis Hotel Lone
redefines outdoor living
Berlin, July 3, 2013 – Tucked into the hillside of the ancient
town of Rovinj, Hotel Lone complements the rich history of
past settlements as Croatia’s first design conscious hotel.
This summer brings the opening of the Hotel Lone’s new
sweeping open-air living area. Seamlessly cut into the
Adriatic hillside, the sunbathing terrace, bar, restaurant and
three pools, harmoniously blend with the nearby protection of
Lone Bay. Designed by Croatian architects 3LHD, this swathe of
luxury mirrors the hotel’s sleek and curved S-shape, conjuring
up images of an elegant cruise liner floating through the
forest-edged waters. Cocooned by pine, cypress, and cedar
trees, the 248-room Hotel Lone’s new all-encompassing outdoor
area
fuses

polished minimalism hugged by nature’s raw appeal. The pools
are divided into Aqua Fun, Relax Pool and a shallow children’s

waterfall and feature a whirlpool, water massages, geysers,
fountains and a 25-meter swimming track. The surrounding
terrace’s elevated height, split among six levels, offers
sunbathers stunning views of the bay and Croatian coastline.
For the ultimate in relaxation, two outdoor massage spaces
await.
Along with the addition of the new outdoor area, Hotel Lone
also introduces Restaurant Oleander. Dine on light
Mediterranean cuisine from the grill or stone oven while
sipping wine under wooden pergolas with the soothing
soundtrack of sea breeze. Daytime invites the ease of linen
and sandals, while night brings summer libations and grilled
steaks for the cocktail crowd. Set to the side of the property

Brussels Airlines passengers
can now enjoy free digital
newspapers
Brussels Airlines passengers who check in online receive a
free digital copy of their newspaper thanks to a unique
collaboration with publishers De Persgroep and Rossel.
Passengers can choose from a wide selection of newspapers on
the day of their flight on any route of the Brussels Airlines
network.
E-newspapers have gained popularity over the last years, and
news sites get more and more visits. Thanks to a collaboration
between Brussels Airlines and the Belgian publishers De
Persgroep and Rossel, Brussels Airlines’ 6 million passengers
can now enjoy a free newspaper on their laptop, tablet or
smartphone while they travel.
The growing number of passengers that check in online for a
Brussels Airlines flight can now not only select their plane
seat and save time at the airport, but they are also invited
to select a newspaper, for which they will receive an access
code.
Free for all passengers
This new service is free for b.light economy, b.flex economy+
and b.business passengers on European flights, as well as for
Economy- and Business Class passengers on intercontinental
flights to the United States and Africa. Passengers can choose
from a selection of popular Belgian and Dutch newspapers: Het
Laatste Nieuws, De Morgen, De Tijd, Le Soir, l’Echo, La Meuse,
La Capitale, Nord Eclair, La Province, De Volkskrant, AD, Het
Parool and Trouw. The aim is to expand the offer with more
foreign newspapers as well as magazines soon. Negotiations are
ongoing.
“This is a good example of how Brussels Airlines responds to
the rapidly changing consumer needs”, says Anne Tricot, VP
Customer Experience at Brussels Airlines. “A lot of passengers
consult news sources on their computer or
paper service we are the first airline
digitization trend. We expect that the
success and that it will motivate more

service will be a

At this stage, the free e-paper service does not entail that
Brussels Airlines will not distribute newspapers to b.business
or b.flex economy+ passengers anymore, although it is expected
that the number of paper newspapers on board the nearly 300
daily Brussels Airlines flights, will drop significantly.
That’s a good thing for the environment thanks to both the
paper saving and the weight reduction of the planes.
The other season at Canet-enRoussillon
canet-en-roussillon is…
• 320 days of sunshine every year
• 9 km of fine sandy beaches
• Ideally situated between Perpignan and Spain
• A “Natura 2000” classified lake with its nature path and
bird watching hides
With the school holidays over and the summer crowds gone, how
about taking a few of the back roads to explore another side
to Canet-en-Roussillon? Indeed this Catalan seaside town has a
lot more to offer besides its beaches and its summer holiday
atmosphere. For this little corner of the Roussillon, which is
kissed by the sun and buffeted by the tramontane wind, is home
to some quite distinctive wines, whether they are red, rosé,
or white or dessert wines, with their Côtes du Roussillon
appellation or the IGP (Protected Geographical Indication
–European Union) label. But don’t just take our word for it..
If you want to find out more why not come and explore the
vineyards or meet the wine growers themselves? Far away from
the crowds, the beginning of autumn is the ideal time for
enjoying that walk out among the vines. If it’s only for the
pleasure of:
Exploring th vinEeyards and all that is special about them.
At the Château de l’Esparrou where you’re given an MP3 to take
with you on your walk or mountain bike ride, your route will
take you along the rolled up pebbles, on your way through what
is a Natura 2000 classified estate complete with the 250
species of birds which can be seen here, to places where you
can taste the grenache and syrah grape wines and enjoy a picknick in and amongst the vines.
At the Château de Rey, visitors are invited to share the love
that Cathy and Philippe have for the land and its vineyards
but also for art, in the form of the artists’ paintings and
sculptures which they regularly put on display in their wine
cellar.
At the Domaine Lafage, the 165 hectares have, for the last 6
generations been managed by a family with recognised expertise
and which is always in search of something new. If proof was
ever needed, look out for the very clean-cut shaped wine
bottles
with their glass stoppers. And then there is the Domaine
Benassis which is now run by the 5th generation of the family
and where the wine is made in one of the oldest buildings of
Canet Village, built completely from cayroux (the local stone)
with its traditional ceiling made from reeds. And finally
there’s the Mas Baux, where Serge has restored an old
farmhouse and replanted the vines which he grows selectively.
Hiking or pedalling around the vineyard
If you’re interested, there’s a new map which shows the 4
routes that will take you up from the port to the lake via the
seafront and of course through the vineyards. This detailed
but easy to use map shows how many kilometres each route
covers, the details of the roads that you’ll be taking, as
well as the places to see along the way…
Not forgEtting, the canet club card
Canet-en-Roussillon has come up with something new this year
with its “Canet Club” card which you can buy from the Tourist
Information centre and which you’ll find is very useful
indeed! It entitles you to:
– Use of the tennis courts – Entrance to the swimming centre –
Entrance to the aquarium – A guided tour of the lake – A
guided tour of the old village – A guided tour of the
arboretum With as a bonus, the Nins Pass and the Canet pass,
which are two mini cheque books offering reductions on a
variety of activities.
Prices: – €11 / adult – €20 / for two adults – €8 for children
under 12 years of age – €33 for a family of 2 adults and 2
children under 12 years
Why not try “The wine growing adventure” ?
If you really want to see everything that Canet-en-Roussillon
has to offer, then why not try the “The Wine Growing
Adventure”? This all-inclusive package starting at €180 is for
2 nights for 2 people in a double room including breakfast and
also bike hire for 2 days, along with an audio-tour of the
Château de l’Esparrou with wine tasting in the cellar, a
typical Catalan pick- nick that you can enjoy in the vineyard
as well as a visit to wine cellars of the Château de Rey
complete with wine tasting.
World Airline Awards 2013:
Austrian Airlines Given Top
Rankings
Austrian Airlines among the ten best European airlines
Among the world’s top five airlines for Business Class
Catering
Overall global ranking improved from 39th to 33rd
Austrian Airlines once again achieved top ratings in the World
Airline Awards 2013. It was ranked once again as one of the
best airlines in Europe, improving its position in the
European rankings from eighth in the previous year to sixth
this year. Austrian Airlines also placed fourth and thus among
the top five as the Best Western Airline in Europe. Thus it
also improved in this category compared to its prior-year
fifth place rating. Austrian Airlines also placed fifth and
thus among the world’s five best again in the category
Business Class Catering thanks to its exclusive DO&CO service
on board. This once again demonstrates that the premium
culinary offering on board with the gourmet food, the Viennese
Coffeehouse Service and professional chefs on board is among
the very best.
In the overall ranking of all global airlines, Austrian
Airlines was rated 33rd in the world. This comprises an
th
improvement from the 39 place achieved in the previous year.
“We are pleased that our customers evaluate us favorably. This
shows that we are on the right path with our resolute product
and quality improvement. We understand the results of the
award as a mandate to improve even more“, says Bernd
Hartweger, Vice President Product Management and Marketing.
Austrian Airlines is working on a whole series of product and
quality improvement measures. It was only two years ago that
the medium haul aircraft were equipped with the new Europe
cabin featuring new, modern leather seats and completely new
interior decorations. At present the conversion of the long
haul aircraft is being implemented. The airline is investing
more than EUR 90 million in order to equip all its long haul
aircraft with new, modern Economy seats, a new in-flight
entertainment system and new Business Class seats which can be
converted into fully flat beds. The first converted aircraft
has been in operation since January 2013. The conversion of
the remaining aircraft is taking place on a step by step
basis. Due to the fact that the survey for the Skytrax ranking
already began six months beforehand, namely in July 2012
(until May 2013), the new product is only partially being
taken into account. “As our current customer surveys indicate,
the level of satisfaction of Austrian Airlines passengers in
Business Class as well as in Economy Class has significantly
increased in recent months with the conversion of our long
haul aircraft”, Bernd Hartweger explains.
The World Airline Awards
The World Airline Awards are not bestowed by a jury but are
based on the results of the world’s most extensive customer
survey in the airline industry carried out by the opinion
research company Skytrax. More than 18 million passengers from
over 160 countries evaluate 200 airlines. All detailed results
are available at www.worldairlineawards.com.
