ABOUT THE HIGGINSON HOUSE
The Higginsons were among the first settlers in the Hawkesbury area; they came here about
1819. This historic building was built as a home for his parents by Colonel William Higginson,
the son of Lieutenant Thomas Higginson. It took about eight years to complete. According
to an 1894 edition of The Eastern Ontario Review, Colonel William Higginson was actively
engaged with the militia of Eastern Ontario since his boyhood days.
Today, the Higginson house is owned by Phil Arber; its space is shared by two tenants: Arbor
Gallery (downstairs) and Terre des Hommes (upstairs).

LA MAISON HIGGINSON

LA GALERIE ARBOR Centre des arts contemporains
La Galerie Arbor - Centre des arts contemporains organise des expositions d’artistes locaux
et invités depuis longtemps. Situé dans la maison Higginson, nous exposons de l’art contemporain et de l’art traditionnel côte à côte pour un mélange rafraîchissant et stimulant. Nous
croyons que les amateurs d’art en milieu rural méritent des expositions aussi sophistiquées et
intéressantes que ceux en milieu urbain. Venez profiter d’une expérience relaxante dans une
galerie au coeur du village ... De l’art visuel excitant dans un contexte historique chaleureux.

ABOUT THE HIGGINSON TOWER
The stone portion of the Higginson Tower was originally built in 1832 to serve as a windpowered grist mill. About 1900, the windmill was dismantled and additional height was
added to the tower. As an observatory, it welcomed members of the Vankleek Hill Mechanical
Society and local high school students as they looked to the stars for knowledge. In the mid
20th century, the tower fell into a state of disrepair.
In 2006, a committee formed to restore the tower as a historic site open to the public. Tour
groups are welcome! Find out more about the tower and the restoration process.

LA TOUR HIGGINSON
La portion en pierres de la Tour Higginson a été construite en 1832 pour servir de moulin
à vent. Autour de 1900, la moulin a été démantelé et on a ajouté de la hauteur à la tour. En
tant qu’observatoire, elle accueillait les membres de la Vankleek Hill Mechanical Society et
des étudiants du secondaire afin qu’ils étudient les étoiles.
Dans le milieu du 20ième siècle, la tour est tombée dans un état de délabrement.
En 2006, un comité a été formé afin de restorer la tour en tant que site historique ouvert au
public. Les groupes sont bienvenus! Apprenez-en plus à propos de la restauration.
