Documentation 1.1 Documentation, textbooks and course materials • Formulaire Fortec • Formulaires et tables. Editions du Tricorne, Genève • Algèbre et trigonométrie. Earl W. Swokowski Jeffery A. Cole PWS Publishing Company. LEP Loisir et pédagogie Lausanne • HP 48 calculator 1.2 Documentation, reference system The course is designed in accordance with the following document: Framework Study Programme for the Professional Maturity. PEC Office fédéral de la formation professionnelle et de la technologie (Federal Office of Vocational Education and Technology) Programme : Mathematics 1.3 Documentation, course plan Integrated Technical Professional Maturity Mathematics : 440 teaching units Post - CFC Technical Professional Maturity Mathematics : 320 teaching units 2. Evaluation process A comparative analysis is impossible since we know neither the textbooks nor the calculators (programmable devices) used by the standard. 1321 Euba Mathematics.doc / 21.03.2001 EURO-BAC II – Evaluation of standards: Mathematics 3. Page 3 Classroom tests It was not possible to conduct classroom tests. Actually, 10 out of 13 examination examples of the standard require the pupils to master differential and integral calculus and statistics and probability. These skills are not taught within the PEC programme. 4. Comparative Analysis Algebra and geometry The content of this field seems quite similar to that of the new PEC, with the exception of matrix calculus (only determinants are taught and applied for the resolution of linear equation systems). Analysis The tool of “differential and integral calculus” is not addressed in Professional Maturity, but linear and second-degree functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, raising to power and extraction of roots, and trigonometric functions are studied in detail with numerous applications. Probability calculus and statistics This area is not contained in the new framework study programme (PEC) or in the programme of the Technical Professional Maturity (MPT) of the Canton of Neuchâtel. Practical mathematics The content of this area is fairly comparable to what is taught in MPT, with the exception of the elements touching on differential and integral calculus. 5. General assessment We find the difficulty level of the exercises comparable to that at the Integrated and PostCFC Technical Professional Maturity of the Canton of Neuchâtel, where the number of mathematics lessons is higher than the minimum of the PEC, but the choice of topics is different. 6. Consequences of a potential introduction of the standards in MP (Professional Maturity) training in Switzerland Currently this standard cannot be applied since its objectives coincide only very partially with those of the framework programme of the PEC. Nevertheless, if the content of the PEC were to be modified (differential and integral calculus) and adapted to the standard, this programme could be considered as comparable to that of the secondary academic schools and should therefore enable students for university access. 1321 Euba Mathematics.doc / 21.03.2001 EURO-BAC II – Evaluation of standards: Mathematics (C) Page 6 EPC-Fribourg Secondary Business School Division of Business-oriented Vocational Matura Data on basic training: 1 hour per week in the 2nd year of MPC 2 hours per week in the 3rd year of MPC (total: 120 hours) Written exam at the end of the training cycle (90 minutes – non-programmable calculator permitted) taken in the presence of a qualified teacher from the HEG Fribourg Brief evaluation report 1. Reference documents Internal working programme for mathematics (cf. document in the Annex) as defined for and currently used within the framework of the EPC, meeting the requirements established by the OPET (Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology, section Business-oriented Vocational Matura). The textbook used is by H.Bovet and called “Mathématiques”. It is supplemented by chapters on progressions, compound interest and annuities. 2. Evaluation process Carried out within the French-speaking branch. The conclusions are drawn on the basis of a comparison between the programmes which are currently used within the framework of the MPC and the mathematics standards proposed for EURO-BAC 2 The involvement of teaching staff was restricted, since only one teacher teaches mathematics in the French-speaking MPC division (a total of 6 hours) 3. Classroom verification: (based on: sample problems provided) N/A, for a single reason: the EURO-BAC 2 standard cannot be adapted to the skill level of our MPC pupils. Exercises 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 11 are reserved to MPT (Technology-oriented Vocational Matura). Exercises 7 and 9 relate to statistics, which we only address in passing. Only the problems 10 and 12 could be addressed, if we increased the number of hours allocated. 4. Comparative analysis between the standards and the MPC framework programmes: With regard to the educational objective, a global similarity is noticeable (cf. PTI EPC) With regard to the examinations, the MPC covers only a part of the area “Algebra and Geometry” (i.e. calculations with constants, variables and expressions, 1321 Euba Mathematics.doc / 21.03.2001 EURO-BAC II – Evaluation of standards: Mathematics Page 7 percentage and interest calculation, equations, inequalities, linear and quadratic equations, working with formulas. However, vectors, matrixes, planimetry, stereometry and trigonometry are not addressed). In the “Analysis” chapter, only linear functions, raising to a power, exponentials, and, to a very limited degree only, logarithms, as well as arithmetic and geometric progressions are addressed. Integral and differential calculus are not addressed. Probability and statistics are only mentioned in passing by way of describing unidimensional data (frequency distribution, measure of central tendency). Descriptions of relationships are not addressed. During the whole course we use, to the maximum extent possible, tangible economic data which relate to the professional environment of our pupils for the exercises. 5. General assessment of the mathematics standards: The standards described could be met if several conditions were fulfilled:: § re-orientation of the programme in an economic environment § pronounced increase of the weekly hours allocated § perhaps even stricter MPC admission criteria …. In addition, the following conditions would have to be met, if these standards were really to be applied effectively as a permanent element of education: § Genuine and efficient co-ordination between the individual vocational schools (common support, exchange of tests, common final exam, common workshops for the teachers concerned) § Improved upstream co-ordination with the cycles d’orientation § Enhanced downstream co-ordination with the HEG (Economics Universities, the most common professional destination for our pupils) 6. Consequences of a potential introduction of these standards in MPC training in Switzerland: I will be unable to answer this question until the above issues are clarified and the new Business-oriented Vocational Matura will be in force.
