Profile of Funding to Media Arts, 2000
THE CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS / LE CONSEIL DES ARTS DU CANADA Profile of Funding to Media Arts, 2000-2001 Profil de l’aide aux arts médiatiques, 2000-2001 Planning and Research / Planification et recherche The Canada Council for the Arts / Le Conseil des Arts du Canada July 2001 / juillet 2001 FUNDING TO MEDIA ARTS PROGRAMS, 2000-2001 • In 2000-2001, the Canada Council for the Arts provided grants worth $9.9 million to media arts in Canada. • Media arts funding is evenly distributed between artists and organizations, with the Council awarding $4.3 million in grants to individual media artists and $5.6 million to media arts organizations (see Table 1a). Media artists received $97,000 for New Media Residencies and $134,500 was awarded in travel grants. A total of 22 Aboriginal artists received $325,000 to pursue projects, while production and creative development grants to 124 film, video, new media and audio artists totaled almost $3.1 million dollars. • Organizational funding assists a wide variety of media arts organizations with their operating, programming, dissemination, project and equipment purchase needs. In 2000-2001, increased funding to media arts organizations was directed towards media arts festivals, with $540,000 distributed to 33 Canadian media arts festivals. Operational and equipment purchase assistance to 40 film production cooperatives and electronic media arts organizations totaled almost $2.7 million. Project assistance and dissemination project grants combined provided almost $900,000 in funding to 56 diverse organizations, while annual assistance programs to production and distribution organizations, as well as cinematheques accounted for $2 million in funds. • In terms of Canada Council funding allocations, media arts received the third least amount of funding of all disciplines. The media arts budget of $9.9 million comprised 11.4% of Council funding for 2000-2001 (see Table 1b). The Canada Council for the Arts/Le Conseil des Arts du Canada Profile of Media Arts Funding, 2000-2001/ Profil de l’aide accordée aux arts médiatiques, 2000-2001 July 2001/juillet 2001 SOME FACTS ABOUT FILM AND VIDEO IN CANADA • Data taken from Statistics Canada’s Film and Video Distribution and Wholesaling Survey indicates that film and video distributors and videocassette wholesalers made more sales in Canada and abroad in 1998-99 than previous years, surpassing the $2-billion mark in total revenue. This increase in total revenues is quite dramatic, given that exports of Canadian film and video productions to foreign markets surpassed the $100-billion mark for the first time only in 1997-98. 1 • Total revenues for the film and video market rose to a record $2.1 billion in 1998-99, a 16% increase from 1997-98. Revenues from 1995 onwards indicate a strong upward trend of increased sales and continued growth in overseas exports of Canadian film and video productions: in 1997-98, overall revenues for the film and video industry as a whole totaled $1.8 billion, up 13% from $1.6 billion in 1994-95. • Slight gains were made in 1998-99 in the battle for increased screenings of Canadian movies on Canadian movie screens. In the theatrical market (commercial movie theatres and drive-ins), Canadian movies’ share in total revenue increased to 3% from 2% in 1997-98, while foreign movies accounted for 97% of $282.2 million in distributors’ revenue. In 1997-98, foreign movies accounted for 98% of $276.7 million in distributors’ revenue. • Limited screen time for Canadian films compared to American and international releases has resulted this low share of distributors’ revenue. This trend is reproduced in the home-video market, with foreign productions accounting for 98% of the $1.02 billion in domestic wholesale sales in 1998-99. This represents only a marginal increase since 1997-98 for Canadian films in the home-video market: that year, 99% of the $812.2 million in domestic wholesale sales was for foreign productions. 1 Data on Canadian film and video distribution was taken from the 1998-99 Film and Video Distribution and Wholesaling Survey conducted by Statistics Canada. The survey sample consisted of 200 film and video distributing and wholesale companies in Canada, primarily engaged in distributing film and video productions to motion picture theatres, television stations and commercial exhibitors.
