Welcome to the Jesmond Dene House wine list. We begin with the Jesmond Dene House Selection, nearly two dozen wines available by the glass or carafe, chosen to match our menu. We can offer wines from the greatest growers on the greatest terroirs in the greatest vintages, including Krug 1995, Chateau Haut Brion 1985 or Chateau Margaux 1985; but we are just as proud of our forty characterful wines under £25. Our house champagne comes from the long established family owned house of Henriot, who specialise in a Chardonnay-rich, elegant style. The 1996 was one of the greatest of all champagne vintages while the prestige Cuvee des Enchanteleurs is from 1990, another great vintage approaching maturity and a reminder that great champagne is great white Burgundy with a few bubbles. 1 2 3 4 10 5 8 7 11 12 561 14 15 9 Champagne Henriot Brut Souverain Champagne Henriot Blanc Souverain Pur Chardonnay Champagne Henriot Millesime Champagne Henriot Millesime Champagne Henriot Cuvee des Enchanteleurs Louis Roederer Brut Premier Pol Roger Brut (White Foil) Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill Bollinger Special Cuvee Bollinger, La Grand Annee (magnum) Moet & Chandon, Cuvee Dom Perignon Krug, Grand Cuvee Krug Vintage NV NV 1998 1996 1990 NV £70 1999 1998 NV 1999 2000 NV 1995 £40 £60 £75 £90 £135 £75 £70 £95 £145 £75 £195 £140 £155 £195 NV NV £70 £90 Rose Champagne 21 23 Henriot Rose Billecart-Salmon Rose Sparkling wines A wonderfully diverse world of fizz – don’t miss the sparkling Shiraz, with its unique notes of black fruits with a hint of oak and tannin - a rare treat for the adventurous. They are the meat eater’s white wine, while the fresh fruit, generally low alcohol and lack of oak also make these wines versatile with more complex and spicy dishes. The Hugel Gentil (formerly Fleur d’Alsace) is a great introduction to what Alsace has to offer, while the Clos Ste Hune is almost unopposed as the greatest of dry Rieslings. 39 35 36 37 42 38 34 Riesling-Gewurztraminer-Pinot Gris, Gentil, Hugel Gewurztraminer, Cote de Rouffach, Rene Mure Pinot Blanc, Reserve, Lucien Albrecht Pinot Gris, Rene Mure Riesling, Trimbach (half bottle) Riesling, Jubilee, Hugel Riesling, Clos Ste Hune, Trimbach 2007 2005 2006 2006 2004 2004 1997 £29 £39 £29 £30 £18 £65 £125 2007 2006 2007 2007 2007 2007 £27 £31 £22 £24 £42 £39 2004 2005 2007 £65 £42 £55 2008 2007 2007 2007 2006 £18 £20 £23 £23 £32 2007 2007 2007 2006 £18 £32 £26 £38 THE LOIRE 40 508 43 44 45 47 Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, Sauvion, Chateau du Cleray Vouvray Sec-Tendre, Chateau Gaudrelle Saumur Blanc, La Cabriole, Vignerons de Saumur Cheverny, Domaine des Marnieres Sancerre, La Croix du Roy, Lucien Crochet Pouilly Fume, Château Favray THE RHONE VALLEY 54 542 59 Condrieu, Les Vins de Vienne Condrieu, La Petite Cote, Yves Cuilleron (half) Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, Domaine de Beaurenard PROVENCE AND THE LANGUEDOC 30 31 32 33 41 Sauvignon Blanc, Domaine de la Prade, VdP d’Oc Picpoul de Pinet, Coteaux du Languedoc, Beauvignac Viognier, VdP d’Oc, Delas Freres Cotes du Roussillon, Grenache Blanc-Malvasia, Malis, Abbe Rous Cotes de Provence Cru Classe, Dom de Rimauresq THE SOUTH WEST 56 53 57 55 VdP des Cotes de Gascogne, Colombard, Dom des Cassagnoles Jurancon Sec, Nays-Labassere Bordeaux Sauvignon Blanc-Muscadelle, Sirius Bordeaux Blanc Sec, Chateau Doisy-Daene 5 BURGUNDY Louis Michel makes Chablis for purists – with not a sniff of oak the stainless steel fermentation strips the wine back to fresh fruit and racy minerality. 60 61 571 Chablis Vieilles Vignes, Domaine de Vauroux Chablis 1er Cru Montmain, Louis Michel et Fils Chablis 1er Cru Montmains, Jean-Marc Brocard (magnum) 2005 2005 2005 £36 £55 £70 From the heartland of the Cote de Beaune these are the world’s most celebrated and imitated white wines. 64 68 63 65 69 66 Bourgogne Aligote, Michel Bouzereau et Fils Bourgogne Chardonnay, Domaine Vincent Girardin Auxey-Duresses, Morey-Blanc Meursault, Vieilles Vignes, Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles, Jean-Marc Pillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres, Alain Chavy 2006 2006 2005 2005 2005 2006 £28 £34 £55 £65 £75 £85 The Cotes Chalonnaise and Maconnais lies just south of the Cote de Beaune and offers a value introduction to white Burgundy. Jean-Marie Guffens is one of the best regarded winemakers in the region. 70 71 Montagny 1er Cru Sur le Cloux, Domaine Alain Roy Macon-Pierreclos, En Crazy, Domaine Guffens-Heynen 2006 2006 £42 £60 6 SOUTHERN EUROPEAN WHITES – SPAIN AND ITALY SPAIN Spanish white wines have been transformed by investment in new technology, especially for cool fermentation which retains fresh fruit character and avoid oxidation. The Albarino, from Rias Baixas on the Galician coast above Portugal, is a new classic match for seafood. But the greatest Spanish white is of course sherry – as well as the halves of fresh appetising Manzanilla, we have wonderful Palo Cortado and Pedro Ximenez by the glass. 75 74 76 77 79 Sanlucar de Barrameda Manzanilla, Solear, Barbadillo (half bottle) Rioja Blanco, Conde de Valdemar Binissalem Blanc de Blancs, Macia Batle, Mallorca Rueda, Marques de Riscal Albarino, Rias Baixas, Casal Caeiro NV 2006 2006 2007 2007 £16 £31 £22 £24 £34 2007 £31 PORTUGAL 78 Bucelas, Arinto, Vale da Murta ITALY Not just Pinot Grigio, although the Puiatti, from the inventor of modern Pinot Grigio, is a marvellously full and flavoursome example. Italian whites are easy on the oak, invariably refreshing, and wonderful with food. The Lugana, from the shores of Lake Garda, is a classic of this type. The southern varieties – Fiano, Greco and Malvasia – offer great alternative to Viognier. 81 84 83 85 88 89 90 87 82 92 93 91 Trentino Pinot Grigio, Mezzacorona Gavi di Gavi, La Meirana, Broglia Langhe Arneis, Cristina Ascheri Collio Pinot Grigio, Ruttars (single vineyard), Puiatti Lugana, Le Creete, Ottella Verdicchio Classico, Casal dei Cavalieri, Umani Ronchi Sannio Falanghina, Mastroberardino Gravina (Greco-Malvasia), Botromagno Fiano di Sicilia, Mandarossa La Segreta Bianco, Planeta, Sicily Chardonnay, Planeta, Sicily Fiano, Cometa, Planeta, Sicily 2007 2008 2006 2007 2007 2008 2006 2007 2008 2006 2006 2006 £22 £32 £36 £48 £36 £19 £28 £25 £19 £24 £48 £50 SLOVENIA Slovenia is just across the border from Italy’s best white wine area, and this Pinot Grigio is one of the best bargains on the list. 80 Goriska Brda Pinot Grigio, Quercus 2008 £22 7 NORTHERN EUROPEAN WHITES – GERMANY AND AUSTRIA GERMANY A century ago the finest German wines were considerably more expensive than first growth claret. The wines are as fine now as they were then, but now they’re hopelessly out of fashion, which makes them relative bargains for the discerning. The first group of wines, from the best sites of the central Rhine, are new wave Riesling, dry on the palate but full of fruit flavour. Erstes Gewachs is the German equivalent of “Grand Cru”. 101 98 100 Rheingau Riesling Trocken, Von Unserm, Balthasar Rees Rheingau Riesling Trocken, Josef Spreitzer Rheingau Riesling Erstes Gewachs, Schloss Vollrads 2007 2006 2005 £34 £38 £48 The following are more traditional, medium German wines, with distinct sweetness balanced by racy acidity, and surprisingly versatile with food. The Rheingau Spatlese offers pure lime fruit; the Scheurebe, from a very ripe vintage, has an explosion of opulent tropical fruit and gingerbread spice. 95 96 97 99 Ruwer Riesling Kabinett, Kaseler Nies’chen, Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Mosel Riesling Spatlese, Piesporter Goldtropfchen, Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Saar Riesling Auslese, Scharzhofberger, Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Pfalz Scheurebe Spatlese, Ungsteiner Herrenberg, Weingut Pfeffingen 2005 2005 2004 2003 £38 £45 £60 £33 AUSTRIA After years of neglect we are now seeing very exciting white wines from Austria. Gruner Veltliner is the native variety; unoaked, with plenty of body, stone fruit and an inimitable twist of white pepper on the finish. 103 105 Burgenland Gruner Veltliner, Hopler Wachau Riesling Smaragd, Loibner Steinertal, F X Pichler 2007 2005 £28 £65 8 NEW WORLD WHITES – THE AMERICAS UNITED STATES The Acero Chardonnay from Marimar Torres is unoaked, with wonderfully pure and intense fruit, while the Limoid Coir (from Roussanne, usually found in the Rhone Valley) has striking lemon fruit alongside nutty complexity. 107 108 109 Paso Robles Roussanne, The Limoid Coir, Garretson Wine Company Carneros Chardonnay, Saintsbury Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Acero, Marimar Torres 2004 2006 2006 £29 £40 £65 ARGENTINA Great value from the high altitude vineyards of Mendoza; this Torrontes, Argentina’s native white grape, is flowery and aromatic, comparable to dry Muscat. 111 Mendoza Torrontes, Bodega Norton 2008 £19 Central Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Los Gansos Colchagua Valley Semillon-Chardonnay, Casa Silva Casablanca Valley Chardonnay, Cuvee Alexandre, Casa Lapostolle 2008 2007 2006 £22 £18 £29 CHILE 116 117 115 9 NEW WORLD WHITES – SOUTH AFRICA, AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND SOUTH AFRICA The Quartz Stone Vineyard is an excellent example of the rich and full southern hemisphere style, while our Chenin Blanc is barrel fermented and more characterful than many. 120 119 122 123 124 Stellenbosch Riesling, Thelema Mountain Vineyards Elgin Sauvignon Blanc, Iona Paarl Chardonnay, Quartz Stone Vineyard, Glen Carlou Coastal Region Chenin Blanc-Clairette, Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Swartland Chenin Blanc, Spice Route 2005 2008 2007 2005 2007 £29 £29 £38 £36 £28 AUSTRALIA The Lehmann Semillon is unoaked, low in alcohol, but full of sherbert, citrus flavour and refreshing crispness, while Tyrell’s Vat 1, still a baby at 7 years old, is the best example of one of the most distinctive wine styles of the world, Hunter Valley Semillon. The Pitchfork Chardonnay is great value and full of melon fruit. But Australia’s greatest white variety is Riesling: the Lehmann Reserve is a rare chance to try an example with a few years’ bottle age and correspondingly developed minerality. 136 129 132 131 128 138 139 137 130 135 Barossa Valley Semillon, Peter Lehmann Hunter Valley Semillon, Vat 1, Tyrell’s McClaren Vale Unwooded Chardonnay, Pitchfork Margaret River Chardonnay, Vasse Felix Eden Valley Riesling, Peter Lehmann Eden Valley Riesling, Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Riesling, The Contours, Pewsey Vale Eden Valley Riesling, Reserve, Peter Lehmann Great Southern Riesling, Forest Hill New South Wales Verdelho, Canonbah Bridge 2005 2002 2008 2007 2007 2008 2003 2002 2006 2005 £22 £60 £24 £32 £25 £26 £35 £32 £26 £27 NEW ZEALAND The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc offers classic pungent gooseberry and asparagus. The Pinot Gris is an alternative, less aggressive than the Sauvignon Blanc but still with worthwhile character and body, while the Riesling is wonderful with a diverse menu. 141 143 140 Marlborough Riesling, Hunter’s Marlborough Pinot Gris, Lawson’s Dry Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Hunter’s 2006 2007 2007 £33 £30 £38 10 FRENCH REDS THE LANGUEDOC 151 156 155 Saint-Chinian, Domaine du Barres Minervois, Château Coupe Roses, Les Plots Coteaux du Languedoc-Montpeyroux, Domaine d’Aupilhac 2007 2005 2005 £21 £31 £32 2006 £23 2006 2005 1996 £29 £38 £80 2001 £27 2006 £39 ROUSSILLON 157 Collioure, Cuvee des Peintres, Abbe Rous THE SOUTH WEST 160 161 164 Cahors, Cuvee Tradition, Chateau Haut-Montplaisir, Madiran, Cuvee Charles de Batz, Domaine Berthoumieu Madiran, Cuvee Prestige, Château Montus PROVENCE 163 Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence, Cuvee Prestige, Château Calisanne THE LOIRE 170 Chinon, Clos des Marronniers, Domaine du Roncee 11 BURGUNDY BEAUJOLAIS 176 177 178 179 Fleurie, Clos des Quatre Vents, Georges Duboeuf Julienas, Domaine du Clos du Fief, Michel Tete Morgon, Cote du Py, Dominique Piron Moulin-a-Vent Les Trois Roches, Pierre-Marie Chermette, Domaine de Vissoux 2007 2006 2006 2006 £32 £29 £38 £42 2006 2005 2006 2000 £31 £60 £65 £65 COTE DE BEAUNE Traditionally in a lighter style than the Cotes de Nuits. 189 188 192 194 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Les Vieilles Vignes, Vincent Girardin Santenay 1er Cru Les Gravieres, Vallet Freres Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves, Domaine Maillard Pommard, Les Perrieres Vieilles Vignes, Jean-Michel Gaunoux COTE DE NUITS The fuller wines of Burgundy (although still Pinot Noir from a cool climate). The wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie are among the finest in the world – we have outstanding growers from the very fine 1999 and 2001 vintages. 200 201 203 206 208 202 Hermitage Les Bressards, Delas Freres Hermitage La Chapelle, Paul Jaboulet Aine Cote Rotie, La Landonne, Delas Freres Cornas, La Louvee, Jean-Luc Colombo St Joseph, Offerus, J. Marked by blackcurrant fruit and the pencil-box aromas of subtle oak ageing, these are the wines everyone in the world tries to imitate – and no-one succeeds. They have unparalled ability to age and are unmatched with food. The communes retain their distinctive character – the chewiness of St Estephe, the power and elegance of Pauillac, the balance and fruit of St Julien, the fragrance of Margaux, the minerality of Graves. 234 224 225 219 231 238 222 226 233 236 237 228 Medoc Cru Bourgeois, Château Potensac Medoc Cru Bourgeois, Chateau Ramafort Haut-Medoc Cru Bourgeois, Château Beaumont Haut-Medoc 5eme Cru Classe, Chateau Cantemerle Saint Estephe, Frank Phelan (2nd wine of Ch Phelan-Segur) Saint Estephe, 4eme Cru Classe, Château Lafon-Rochet Saint Estephe, 5eme Cru Classe, Château Cos Labory Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe, Château Pedesclaux Margaux 1er Cru Classe, Chateau Margaux Graves, Chateau des Gravieres Pessac-Leognan, L’Esprit de Chevalier (2nd wine of Dom de Chevalier) Graves 1er Cru Classe, Château Haut Brion 2002 2001 1998 2001 2000 1996 1990 2002 1985 2005 2002 1985 £48 £48 £45 £55 £50 £85 £98 £55 £395 £32 £40 £295 RIGHT BANK By contrast, the right bank offers the hedonistic thrills of Merlot. The Rioja and Ribero del Duero wines show the traditional values of mellow, oak aged Tempranillo, while the new wave of fresh and full wines from Mediterranean varieties is represented by Campo de Borja and Jumilla. The range of grape varieties is the attraction – not just another Cabernet or Syrah. The Vinha Maria Teresa is a classic of ripe fruit made into a full style, while the Xisto is a fascinating joint venture between the Roquette family of Quinta do Crasto and the Cazes family of Chateau Lynch-Bages of Bordeaux – Douro fruit, Bordeaux winemaking. 301 302 303 Bairrada Baga, Quinta da Rigodeira Xisto, Roquette e Cazes Vinha Maria Teresa 2005 2003 2003 £23 £65 £90 16 NEW WORLD REDS – THE AMERICAS UNITED STATES If you want to find the world’s most obsessive winemakers, those who love nature and hate chemicals, and genuinely want wines to have a sense of place at all costs, don’t bother with a gnarled French paysan; look for an philosophy professor from Stanford like Paul Draper of Ridge, or a retired TV actor like Fess Parker. No wine producers have such dedication to the highest standards of viticulture and vinification as those in California, Oregon and Washington. The Napa Valley Cabernet from Atalon is a classic explosion of ripe fruit, while the Ridge Montebello is in a more elegant, “European” style. Cristom’s single vineyard bottlings from Oregon are the pure essence of Pinot Noir. 307 300 313 306 309 312 310 Monterey Valdiguie, Wildflower, J Lohr Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon, Montebello, Ridge Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Atalon Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Eileen Vineyard, Cristom California Zinfandel, Fess Parker Sonoma County Zinfandel, Geyserville, Ridge Paso Robles Syrah, The Aisling, Garretson Wine Company 2007 1990 2001 2004 2005 2005 2003 £29 £225 £75 £90 £30 £65 £50 ARGENTINA All our Argentinian wines are from Salta and Mendoza, home of the world’s highest vineyards in the shadow of the Andes, where the hot days and cool nights create slow ripening and a character which valley wines simply can’t match. Thelema’s “Mint” Cabernet shows the refreshing eucalyptus flavours traditionally associated with Coonawarra. Underripe Pinotage is notoriously unattractive – ours, from hot inland Swartland, retains the quirky character of the grape while being well made and balanced. 333 335 332 339 334 331 Stellenbosch Cabernets-Shiraz, Mountain Red, Thelema Stellenbosch Cabernet-Merlot, Estate Red, Meerlust Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon, “The Mint”, Thelema Walker Bay Pinot Noir, Galpin Peak, Bouchard Finlayson Tulbagh Syrah-Mourvedre, Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Swartland Pinotage, Spice Route 2005 2004 2006 2006 2004 2007 £27 £30 £50 £55 £39 £34 AUSTRALIA Our Australian collection offers a real alternative to the big “South East Australian” branded wines, grown in the heavily irrigated inland desert and providing a reliable but slightly dull experience for the supermarket shopper. The following are all wines with a sense of place, and mostly from the cooler regions of Australia, allowing for long slow ripening and the development of character. Don’t miss the Red Horse, a St-Emilion blend at the lighter end of Australian wine, gorgeously scented, and with good table manners. 338 347 590 345 348 346 340 343 350 355 Grampians Shiraz, Cliff Edge, Mount Langi Ghiran Barossa Shiraz, Antiquus, Peter Lehmann Barossa Cabernet-Shiraz, The Signature, Yalumba (magnum) Barossa Valley Grenache, Peter Lehmann McClaren Vale Grenache, Bush Vine, Chapel Hill Eden Valley Merlot-Barossa Cabernet Franc, Red Horse, Irvine Connawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Leconfield Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, Vasse Felix Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, Yering Station Tasmania Pinot Noir, Pipers Brook Reserve 2004 2001 2000 2005 2006 2005 2005 2005 2005 2003 £32 £34 £95 £19 £36 £32 £32 £42 £34 £75 18 NEW WORLD REDS - NEW ZEALAND Famously diverse, New Zealand has two world-class areas for red wines – Central Otago, often hyped as producing the best Pinot Noir outside Burgundy, and Hawkes Bay, whose Gimblett Gravels district provides one of the New World’s few genuine terroirs. The Trinity Syrah has proper Northern Rhone black pepper. 351 582 Central Otago Pinot Noir, Quartz Reef Hawkes Bay Syrah, Gimblett Road, Trinity Hill (magnum) 2006 1999 £45 £60 ROSE WINES The Sancerre, from Pinot Noir, is light and dry. We move towards fuller and fruitier roses with the Scalabrone; the South African and Australian roses, while still dry wines, are bursting with ripe fruit. As well as the classic botrytised wines of Sauternes and Tokaji, we also offer a range of late harvest wines from Jurancon, Germany, California and Australia which offer purer fruit.
