Emotions with and without
a ball
Remarkable action shots from the world
of handball in 2005 were presented at
this year's Photo of the Year contest. The
number and above all the quality of the
photographs entered were such that the
international jury presided over by the
President of the IHF, Dr. Hassan Moustafa,
found itself impelled to take an unusual
decision: this year, the World Handball
Magazine is awarding two first prizes ex
aequo. Both prize winners, the Dane Lars
Rønbøg and his Austrian colleague Leena
Manhart – have been awarded CHF 5,000
each.
Tension on the bench
Although the photograph shot by the
Danish photojournalist Lars Rønbøg does
not display a classical scene from the field
of play, the impressive study of the players and officials on the bench catches the
tension like no other of the entries in the
contest. Condemned to watch passively
HK Viborg’s women handball players
feverishly observe the imminent 7m-throw.
Their faces clearly reflect a mixture of tension, fear and anticipation, and the way
they are literally holding on to each other
demonstrates team unity.
The object of desire
The work of the other prize winner, Leena
Manhart, shows the events on the field of
play in a more typical manner, although
she has photographed the scene in a
most unusual way. The jury was won over
mainly by the combination of the two
photographs. When contemplating both
in sequence, this “mini-series“ illustrates
perfectly how the object of desire, the
ball, is literally snatched from the stunned
defender und how the attacker to the horror of the victim prepares to throw the ball
in the same instant.
Amongst this year’s winners the following
photographers have already won a prize

1996 Kerstin Jönsson (AUT), 1998 Sandor
Kodrucz (HUN), 1999 Björn Langsem
(NOR), 2000 Björn Moe (NOR), 2001
Hisashi Yamakage (JPN), 2002 Jessica
Gow (SWE), 2003 Jack Mikrut (SWE)
and 2004 Sascha Klahn (GER).
The IHF is again seeking the Photograph
of the Year for 2006. The rules of participation in the contest will be published in the
WHM at the end of the year.

to share with our readers because of their
quality, are reproduced in colour on the

Valse d’émotions autour
du ballon
Un impressionnant panorama de l’actualité handballistique : c’est le résultat du
concours «Photo de l’année 2005». La
quantité, et surtout l’excellente qualité des
travaux en lice ont contraint le jury international sous la direction du Dr Hassan
Moustafa, président de l’IHF, d’opter pour
une solution inhabituelle : un premier prix
ex aequo. Les deux lauréats du prix 2005 du
World Handball Magazine, le Danois Lars
Rønbøg et l’Autrichienne Leena Manhart,
recevront chacun 5000 francs suisses.
Tension sur le banc de touche
Ce n’est peut-être pas une scène de jeu
classique que Lars Rønbøg, journaliste
reporter d’images, a capturé avec son
objectif. Sa photo saisit néanmoins avec
une acuité admirable la tension qui règne
aux abords du terrain de jeu. Condamnées
à rester passives, les joueuses du HK Viborg
attendent fiévreusement l’exécution d’une
frappe de sept mètres. Se tenant les unes
les autres, les visages marqués par la tension, l’angoisse, mais aussi une joie anticipée, elles sont soudées dans l’épreuve.
L’objet de toutes les convoitises
L’œuvre de Leena Manhart est une illustration plus classique du déroulement du
jeu, mais sa photo est prise d’un angle
des moins conventionnels. Le jury a été
particulièrement sensible à l’harmonie qui
se dégage de l’association des travaux de
Rønbøg et de Manhart. Admirés comme les
deux volets d’une même œuvre, ils révèlent
au spectateur comment le ballon, objet de
toutes les convoitises, échappe au nez et à la
barbe du défenseur qui, surpris, réalise avec
horreur l’imminence de la frappe.

«Photo de l’année 2006» seront publiées à
la fin de l’année dans le WHM.

Bemerkenswerte Momentaufnahmen aus
dem Handballgeschehen des Jahres 2005
standen beim aktuellen Wettbewerb zum
Foto des Jahres zur Auswahl, und die Zahl
und vor allem die Qualität der Bilder
zwangen die international besetzte Jury
unter dem Vorsitz des IHF Präsidenten
Dr. Hassan Moustafa zu einem ungewöhnlichen Schritt: In diesem Jahr vergibt das
World Handball Magazine gleich zwei
erste Preise. Beide Gewinner - der Däne
Lars Rønbøg und seine österreichische
Kollegin Leena Manhart - dürfen sich über
je 5000,- Schweizer Franken freuen.

Auch wenn das Foto des dänischen
Bildjournalisten Lars Rønbøg keine klassische Spielszene zeigt, so fängt doch die
eindrucksvolle Studie vom Spielfeldrand
die Anspannung wie kaum ein anderer
Wettbewerbsbeitrag ein. Zur Passivität
verdammt fiebern die Spielerinnen von HK
Viborg der Ausführung eines SiebenmeterWurfs entgegen. Ihre Gesichter spiegeln
eine Mischung aus Spannung, Angst und
Vorfreude, die Art, wie sie sich buchstäblich aneinander festhalten, demonstriert
mannschaftliche Geschlossenheit.
Das Objekt der Begierde
Die zweite Preisträgerin Leena Manhart
zeigt mit ihrer Arbeit die etwas typischere
Sicht auf das Spielgeschehen, wenn auch
anhand einer äußerst ungewöhnlich fotografierten Szene. Die Juroren überzeugte
vor allem die Kombination der beiden
Fotos. Sieht man diese im Kontext zueinander, dann illustriert diese “Mini-Serie”
wie dem verdutzten Abwehrspieler der
Ball, das Objekt der Begierde, vor Augen
weggeschnappt wird und der Angreifer
zum Entsetzen des derart Überrumpelten
noch in der gleichen Sekunde zum Wurf
ansetzt.
Vor den diesjährigen Gewinnern sind
bereits folgende Fotografen ausgezeichnet worden: 1992 Gerhard Uhl (GER),

Jahres im WHM veröffentlicht.
