Students will translate texts from French into English (version), and from English into French (thème). These translations will allow students to concentrate on the grammatical structures of both languages, to expand their vocabulary, and to be aware of the functioning and colloquialisms pertinent to each language. All the texts translated will be from authentic material covering a broad range of linguistic levels and registers, both past and contemporary. Because translating is a very precise work, you must have a good bilingual dictionary. You need a full size dictionary, not a pocket one! You also need to have an advanced French grammar book (i.e. En bonne forme used in MLL 321 French Grammar and Composition II). You may also need to consult an English grammar. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES (Methods of assessment of student learning) Students will have to practice two types of translation exercises: la version, translation of a text from a foreign tongue to your native tongue, and le thème, translation of a text from your native tongue to a foreign tongue. You will be given a thème or a version to work on each week. You will have three weeks to complete a polished translation: at the end of the first two weeks you have to turn in your advanced first draft; after your first draft is returned to you, you have the third week to polish it and turn in your final translation. You will be working on two texts most weeks. 2 We will meet about once a month (4 times throughout the semester) to discuss translation problems, methods and tricks. You attendance is mandatory, no absences will be permitted. You will also have a final project for which you must work on one thème and one version of two current magazine articles of your choice and turn in both translations at the end of the semester. Each translation should be 2-3 pages long. The chosen articles (in French and English) must be original texts (not texts in translation from any other languages). You will need to provide a copy of the original text with your translation. All work, included first drafts, must be typed, double space. All translations must be turned in on time in the appropriate Canvas Assignment category. They are all due by 12:00 pm (noon) on the due date. One-half of a letter grade will be deducted for each day any assignment is late. Students will also be required to spend a ½ hour per week in conversation with a native French speaker. Her/his schedule will be made available to you, and you will sign up for a permanent time-slot to meet with her/him each week (location to be decided with your conversation partner; Skype meetings may also be a solution). If you miss your appointment the Modern Languages and Literature Department budget cannot afford to pay your conversation partner double—for the time you miss and for the make-up appointment; so make sure to call your Conversation Partner in advance to cancel an appointment. You may call to reschedule only if you cancel in advance. The time spent in conversation will count toward the Monthly Meetings portion of the student’s grade. If you miss your appointment, you will not receive credit for it. Students are also encouraged to attend the French Table throughout the semester, as well as French Club activities. Knowledge # 1: The teacher is aware that language manifests itself in all aspects of life. Knowledge # 2: the teacher knows how the target culture and target language interrelate. Knowledge # 3: The teacher understands linguistic and cultural realities as dynamic and complex and views perspectives of language and culture in relation to practices and products. Knowledge # 4: The teacher knows both formal and informal aspects of the target language: geography, history, economics, the arts, religion, politics, daily living and customs, social sciences, literature, and origins of the language. Performance # 1: the teacher presents the target language, its literature, and its culture in contextually meaningful situations. Performance # 2: The teacher explains the interrelated connections between the target language and the target culture. Examples of Required Performance: Translation of authentic texts French English in a variety of genres, styles and epochs. Standard # 2: The teacher of a foreign language is proficient in the foreign language Knowledge # 1: The teacher is aware of the levels of proficiency in the basic skills in foreign language and his or her own level. Performance # 5: The teacher can express his or her own ideas on practical, social, and professional topics in most formal and informal writing styles in the target language. Performance # 6: The teacher can write most kind of correspondence, such as memos, social and business letters, short research papers, and statement of position in areas of special interest in the target language. Examples of Required Performance: Translation of authentic texts French English in a variety of genres, styles and epochs. IKE (Certificate of International Knowledge and Experience): This course counts towards the academic component of the IKE Certificate of International Knowledge and Experience. The IKE Certificate may be earned by students in any major. The academic component consists of five courses - two semesters of a foreign language, and three courses with international content in three different disciplines. To receive the certificate, students must also complete a second component, either by studying abroad, or by participating in co-curricular activities on campus. Completion of the IKE certificate as an undergraduate is noted on a student’s PSU undergraduate transcript, although graduate students may also earn the certificate.
