“New Canadian Flu Vaccine has entered Phase l Clinical Trial”
Saskatoon, SK – May 21st, 2014 – The Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise Inc. (PREVENT), a
national Centre of Excellence for Commercialization and Research (CECR), and FOLIA BIOTECH
Inc. in Quebec City are pleased to announce the initiation of an influenza vaccine Phase l clinical
trial at the Canadian Center for Vaccinology in Halifax. This clinical study will be the first in
human use of the novel PAL vaccine adjuvant.
The PAL adjuvant was invented by Dr. Denis Leclerc at Laval University and is being
commercialized through PREVENT and FOLIA BIOTECH. PAL technology is based on the rodshaped crystalline nanoparticles derived from the Papaya Mosaic Virus (PapMV).
The main objective of the Phase I clinical trial is to demonstrate that the novel adjuvant
platform PAL is well tolerated by humans. It is also the opportunity to get insight on the
potential clinical benefits to combine PAL to a current vaccine. Indeed, increasing doses of PAL
will be combined with a current Trivalent Influenza Vaccine (TIV) in this observer-blind,
randomized, controlled, dose escalation study in healthy adults. This combination is expected
to improve protection against seasonal flu.

Nouveau vaccin canadien contre la grippe
Début de l’essai clinique ─ Phase I
Saskatoon, SK – xx Mai 2014 – Pan-Provincial Vaccine Enterprise Inc. (PREVENT), un Centre
d’excellence en commercialisation et en recherche (CECR) canadien dont le siège social est situé
à l’Université de la Saskatchewan, et FOLIA BIOTECH, une société de biotechnologie, annoncent
le début d’un essai clinique de Phase I sur un vaccin contre la grippe au Canadian Center for
Vaccinology (CCfV) de Halifax. Il s’agit du premier essai chez l’humain pour PAL, un nouvel
adjuvant vaccinal innovateur.
L’adjuvant PAL découvert par le Dr Denis Leclerc, professeur à l’Université Laval, est développé
conjointement par PREVENT et FOLIA BIOTECH. La technologie PAL est une nanoparticule
cristalline en forme de bâtonnet dérivée du virus de la mosaïque de la papaye (PapMV).
L’objectif principal de l’essai clinique de Phase I est de démontrer l’innocuité et la tolérabilité de
l’adjuvant PAL chez l’humain. C’est également l’occasion d’obtenir un aperçu des avantages
cliniques potentiels de l’ajout de PAL à un vaccin commercial. À cet effet, des doses croissantes
de PAL seront combinées à un vaccin influenza trivalent (TIV) et administrées à des adultes en
bonne santé dans une étude clinique à simple insu, contrôlée et randomisée. Cette
combinaison devrait permettre d’améliorer la protection contre la grippe saisonnière.
