Summer Internship description Characterisation and simulation of pixel-detector prototypes Project Description: The CLIC-LCD vertex detector R&D aims at developing highly granular and ultra-thin position sensitive detection devices with very low power consumption and fast timestamping capability. The selected student will be involved in the ongoing tests of thin silicon pixel sensor prototypes with Timepix-based readout. He or she will participate in measurements with a pion beam at the CERN-SPS. The sensors will be characterised using the Timepix telescope setup developed for the LHCb experiment. The student will also participate in the TCAD and GEANT4 device and physics simulation activities. Based on the simulation models developed in the group, the student will perform simulations and compare the obtained results with test-beam data. Computing training: C/C++, Python, ROOT CAD software (ANSYS, COMSOL, MAXWELL, SYNOPSIS, SILVACO etc.) Labview/Labwindows CVI Division of the tasks: 1/3 computing (programming, data analysis) 1/3 hardware (data acquisition, instrumentation) 1/3 physics (simulation and modeling, interpretation of measurements) Training value: This project will allow the selected candidate to become familiar with modern simulation tools used in high-energy and semi-conductor device physics, such as the GEANT4 and TCAD simulation frameworks. The student will also be involved in a measurement campaign on innovative pixel-detector prototypes in development at CERN. The candidate will be able to participate in test beam activities and data acquisition with sensor prototypes. He or she will then use the obtained results to validate the simulation. The proposed project combines experimental and simulation work, thus allowing the student to obtain a comprehensive view of pixel sensor R&D. Furthermore, the student will develop his or her interpersonal skills by working in an international team of physicists. He or she will also have the opportunity to present and discuss the obtained results in meetings.
