Tyler TEMPORAL INTEGRATION AND COCHLEAR HEARING
TEMPORAL INTEGRATION AND COCHLEAR HEARING LOSS ABSTRACT Tyler Volume I, Autumn 1976 The effect of off-frequency energy on temporal integration measurements was investigated. Temporal integration functions for unfiltered and high pass filtered sinusoids of 20 and 200 msec duration with 1 msec rise-fall times were obtained from 4 normal hearing subjects and 4 subjects with high frequency, cochlear hearing impairments. Independent of filtering, normal hearing subjects produced integration functions that were similar to those shown by other research. All four hearing impaired subjects showed abnormal temporal integration in the unfiltered condition. When forced to listen on-frequency, two of the hearing impaired subjects demonstrated normal temporal integration. It was concluded that offfrequency energy can confound the measurement of temporal integration. A NEW APPROACH TO TREATMENT OF SPASTIC DYSPHONIA ABSTRACT Kaston, Atda Volume I, Autumn 1976 A case of successful treatment of spastic dysphonia is described. The procedure used was suggested by Dr. Herbert Dedo, and involved surgical sectioning of one recurrent laryngeal nerve causing paralysis of one vocal cord in paramedian position. The result in this case was similar to those reported by Dedo: complete elimination of spastic dysphonia. L'INTEGRATION TEMPORELLE ET LA PERTE DE L'OmE COCHLEAlRE RESUME Volume 1. PERFORMANCE OF BILINGUAL CUBAN·AMERICAN APHASIC PATIENTS ON A TASK OF BODY PART IDENTIFICATION ABSTRACT Volume I, Autumn 1976 Glass Controversy exists with regard to which language is recovered following cerebral insult in bilingual aphasic patients. This study attempted to examine individula's gestural responses to a verbally presented body part identification task. Six nonaphasic non-brain damaged and eight aphasix Cuban immigrants were screened for knowledge of the Spanish and English languages and for the frequency with which each language was spoken. They were given the Body Part Identification Subtest of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Test (Goodglass, 1972). Results indicated that fewer errors appeared in the first learned language (Spltnish), which more errors appeared in the second acquired language (Enl~ish). In both the aphasic and the control group, there were more verbal paraphaSIC errors than literal paraphasic errors in the English language than in the Spanish language. The results of this study and its implication regarding bilingualism and aphasia were discussed. THE USE OF COMPETING SPEECH FOR MAKING DISMISSAL DECISIONS IN ARTICULATION THERAPY ABSTRACT CampbeU, Manning, Robertson, DlSalvo Volume I, Autumn 1976 In order to estimate the readiness for dismissal from therapy of 76 elementary school children with Irl or Isl misarticulations, the Deep Test of Articulation was administered under three conditions: Condition I without auditory masking, Condition n with auditory masking, and Condition III without auditory masking three months after Condition II testing. Auditory masking took the form of a competing speech tape presented binaurally at 65 or 85 dB SPL. Each child's performance on the Deep Test with and without masking was compared to performance on the Deep Test during Condition Ill. Results indicated that significantly more children (p >.05) would have been accurately dismissed from therapy using performance on the Deep Test with masking as a criterion for dismissal than by using performance on the Deep Test without masking. The variables of sound pressure level of the masking and phoneme type did not make a significant difference in the number of children which would have been correctly dismissed from or retained in therapy. Ils ont passe le "Body Part Identification Subtest of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasis Test" (Goodglass, 1972). RELIABIUTY CONSIDERATIONS OF A VOICE PROFILING SYSTEM ABSTRACT Starr,Wllson Volume I, Autumn 1976 The Voice Profile is a clinical tool that is used, rather widely. to describe and evaluate features of voice disorders. This report provides data on the reliability of c1inicans use of the Profile. Fifteen experienced and 15 inexperienced clinicans used the Profile to describe the voices of 25 persons who had been diagnosed as having voice disorders. Analysis of data obtained is interpreted as indicating that the Profile can be used most effectively in tasks where one determines whether features are normal or deviant. and that experienced and inexperienced clinicians use it with similar reliability.
