Exercise 1
Read the text about Jamie Oliver. Then decide if the following statements are true or false.
Jamie Oliver
Born on 27 May 1975, Jamie took an early interest in food. He grew up in Essex, where his
parents Trevor and Sally still run their own highly respected pub/restaurant. Jamie Oliver is a
phenomenon in the world of food. He is one of the world's best-loved television personalities
and one of Britain's most famous exports. Jamie has had huge success with television series
like The Naked Chef (BBC) or Jamie's Kitchen.
Jamie has inspired people to spend more time enjoying being in the kitchen. His
programmes have now been broadcasted in over 100 countries. Having been translated into
over 30 languages, the accompanying cookbooks are bestsellers not only in the UK but
across the world. His 2010 book, Jamie's 30 Minute Meals, became Jamie's first millionselling book in the UK as well as being the fastest-selling non-fiction book since records
began.
Jamie's newest restaurant, Barbecoa in London, is a partnership with American chef Adam
Perry Lang. Jamie lives in London and Essex with his wife Jools and his kids, Poppy, Daisy,
Petal and Buddy.
In 2005, his TV series Jamie’s School Dinners went out on Channel 4.
Over the past 5 or 6 years, big changes have been made to school food thanks to this
programme but his work is far from over. The UK has the highest rate of childhood obesity in
Europe, with 25% of young people being classified as obese or overweight. The
Government’s Foresight report suggests this will only get worse, with 40% of Britons
expected to be obese by 2025 – unless we all do something about it.
1. Jamie is well known abroad.
2. Jamie’s programmes are shown in less than 100 countries.
3. Jamie’s books have only been published in English.
4. You can find all Jamie’s TV recipes in books.
5. Jamie has written a book on how to prepare food quickly.
6. Jamie runs a business with another cook.
7. Jamie was 30 when he started Jamie’s School Dinner.
8. In Great Britain a quarter of the population is obese.

British Sea Captain held at Gunpoint by Somali Pirates
(from The Times, April 4, 2008)
A British sea captain and his crew are recovering after being held hostage for 47 days by Somali
pirates who captured their boat near the African coast.
Colin Darch, 65, was on his way to Singapore when the ship was approached by five armed men in a
large speed boat. The captain tried to escape. His boat had very powerful engines and at first he
succeeded in getting away, but then a second boat arrived. This pirate boat was faster than the first
one and the pirates began shooting, so the captain stopped his boat. The pirates climbed on board
and said they would kill the captain and the crew if they did something wrong.
Captain Darch was on his last voyage, carrying goods from Russia to Singapore. He knew the
dangers posed by Somali pirates, who look for unprotected boats. There are reports in newspapers
almost every day on these acts of piracy which sometimes end in disaster for the members of the
crew. “That’s why we were following the approved route and 70 miles off shore,” he said.
After this voyage, which normally took 17 days, Captain Darch was going to retire in England. Instead,
with Fred Murphy, his Irish engineer, and four Russian crew members, he was held prisoner by 20
pirates for over six weeks. The only Somali who spoke English said that they wanted a ransom. Life
on board was hard. There were no activities for the crew but the cooks were very busy. The pirates
wanted them to cook meals for them. They even asked them to bake a birthday cake for their chief.
The pirates ate a lot but fortunately, they didn't drink alcoholic beverages.
Captain Darch talked everyday with the owners of the boat in Russia who didn’t want to pay the
ransom. Every week the pirates were more impatient and people were getting nervous. An American
warship watched from a distance but did not try to rescue the crew because they were afraid the
pirates would kill the hostages. Fred Murphy, the engineer, said every night he prayed to God the
American warship would not attack the pirates because he knew it would be very dangerous and
could end in a bloodbath.

After weeks of talks, a ransom was paid. However, there were still difficulties because the pirates had
no passports or bank accounts. Captain Darch said: "It was like a group of factory workers who had
won the lottery but couldn't find the ticket". No one knows how much money was paid because the
Russian company asked Captain Darch not to speak about the ransom as it could encourage future
pirates to attack boats.
On March 18, the pirates left and the crew continued their voyage. When he finally got home in
England, Captain Darch told his wife that he wasn't going to travel with her to Africa as they had
planned. He didn’t want to go back to that region of the world and his experience on the boat taught
him that life is very precious. As a sea captain he had not seen his own children grow up and now he
wanted to spend time with his grandchildren before it was too late.
