Where in situ installation meets graphics, the application of an offbeat urban sign gets pedestrians to discover the byways of the town of Gan. A set of panels giving directions punctuates the way and invents a visual language waiting to be discovered. By using a drawing inspired both by heraldic banners and road signs, we use a vocabulary of elements coming from the region, and compose colourful, poetic and disconcerting images. The panels, which are at once walking guides and enigmatic quest objects, are also signals which surprise onlookers and prompt them to walk around the town in a different way. They are set up at carefully chosen places based on the topography of the old walled town (bastide) of Gan and noteworthy urban features, thus creating an alternative itinerary. The appropriated use, in the public place, of an ordinary object in the town’s vocabulary, displaying a stylized representation of salient factors in the environment, some better known than others, is thus intended as a kind of disorientation in one’s own home, so to speak, a “reflection” of the town as if through a distorting mirror, for a different reading of the circuits, opening up unusual prospects, and ushering in deviations in walking and thinking. We are most grateful for their cooperation and support to the teams at the Gan town hall and the Bel Ordinaire, as well as to the people of Gan encountered during our stays in the town, and the Signature Industry company at Urruque, which manufactured the panels. Nos Barbie® et autres Playmobils® en prenaient pour leur grade, et nous nous demandions, soudainement, si leur plasticité générique ne nous avait pas fait oublier que la richesse de Déviations _Camille de Singly 42 Deviations Gan, Pyrénées Atlantiques, 5200 inhabitants, the scallop (named in French after St. James), des over our discovery of the works, and even a strategic site on the road from Pau to the the bricks, the bottle of Jurançon, and the over the general path we might take between Pyrenees, along the edge of the Ossau Valley. words “Nymphis” and “Ex voto”. The liberties taken by Augustin Gimel and Brigitte Perroto in relation to their two initial formal sources, the heraldic and the sign(al), attest to this desire to renew the relationship to the sign, and, thereby, to space. Others before them have been interested in the conception and appropriation of the astonishing formal vocabulary of signs and signals, aimed at creating a syncretic, synthetic image, an abstraction of reality, which would have itself understood by one and all, like Plato’s eidos. Some 15 years ago, the artist Julian Opie thus digitally produced a strange work, a seemingly thoroughly simple story where the décors were a kind of quintessence of landscape, with no distinctive features (Driving in the Country). Julian Opie thus emphasized the limits of this quest for a universally shared ideal: producing something insignificant.
