PRESS RELEASE THE NEXT 50 YEARS OF MUSIC STARTS TODAY THE NEW GENERATION OF INTERNATIONAL LABELS MEET THE ESTABLISHED PLAYERS AT MIDEM Paris, 31 March, 2016 – For its landmark 50th edition, Midem is bringing together an unprecedented combination of traditional power players - including the major and established independent labels - along with a slew of younger labels, publishers and tech companies, for four days of exciting industry networking, learning and business. Midem will once again prove to be an invaluable event as key industry players from all over the world map out the future of the music industry. It will bring together both upcoming and recognised talent including Daniel Miller (Mute Records), Olivier Robert-Murphy (Universal Music Group), Daniel Glass (Glassnote Entertainment Group), Lihui Shen (Modern Sky), as well as Mark Piibe (Sony Music Entertainment), Jason Flom (Lava Records) and Patrik Larsson (Playground Scandinavia). These forward-thinkers will share their experience and vision on the state of the music business and what lies ahead for the next 50 years. Key trade associations, including IAEL, ICMP, IMMF, IMPALA, Merlin, and WIN, will also welcome their members through an array of activities across the four days of Midem. “Record labels have always played an essential role in the past 50 years of music at Midem. We’re thrilled to welcome such a wide array of international record companies again in 2016. The next years of the music business will most definitely be impacted by the visions, decisions and encounters made in Cannes this summer,” says Jérôme Delhaye, Director of Entertainment Division, Reed MIDEM, organiser of Midem. To accelerate this further, Midem’s extensive conference programme is introducing a brand new series of discussions dedicated to labels and right-owners’ key issues: the Label Summer Camp. Related panels will offer best practices and concrete tips from industry insiders on how to find a digital aggregator, innovative ways to monetise catalogues, to sync and licence music and build successful digital marketing campaigns and video strategies. Label representatives will also learn how they can export their artists and repertoires to mature and emerging music markets, including the USA, Germany, France, the UK, Brazil, China or South Africa. "I am very thrilled to be speaking about my transition from an artist to setting up my own label at this year's Midem. I encourage everyone to attend to learn about the business in music,” comments Sarkodie, Artist & Founder, Sarkess Music (Ghana). "I’m excited to be present and speak at Midem’s 50th birthday party because I love the music business, I love France, and I love speaking! Come join us. It’s going to be great!" enthuses Jason Flom, Founder & CEO, Lava Records (USA). And while recently born labels will explain what it takes to create a music company in today’s streaming era, Cooking Vinyl’s founder Martin Goldschmidt will unveil how he has built an expanding independent music group since 30 years. “Midem has helped us run a worldwide network. That’s actually bigger than building it, because you can see 15 of your international partners in four days,” notes Martin Goldschmidt, Managing Director and Owner of Cooking Vinyl (UK). Besides attending conferences, labels can also source and sign new talent, while enjoying nonstop music with the second edition of the Midem Artist Accelerator, a showcase for the discovery of 12 international upcoming artists selected by a high-level artistic committee, including Ethiopia Habtemariam (Universal Music Publishing Group), Christopher Kaskie (Pitchfork) and Horst Weidenmueller (!K7 Music). “I've always been rather envious seeing all the news and excitement coming from Cannes during Midem. I'm excited to be able to reply finally with an emphatic ‘Yes!’ to the deluge of emails asking me if I’m going to be at Midem and can we meet,” says Grant Bussinger, Head of Digital, Warp Records (UK). Midem takes place in Cannes, France, from 3-6 June 2016 and will welcome visionary keynotes from Neil Warnock, Head of Music Worldwide, UTA; Mary Ramos, music supervisor for over 100 films including many of Quentin Tarantino’s pics; and Alibaba Music Group’s Chairman, Gao Xiaosong.
