Aaron & Curti
Bonjour, nous nous
appelons Jonathan, et
Aaron. Nous se être
parler a le sujet de
NORAD dans North
America. NORAD
(North American
Aerospace Defense
Command) is the U.S
military’s primary
source for aerospace
protection. It is designed to track any
suspicious aircraft that
come into the North
American territory.
This keeps all of the U.S
and Canada under protection. NORAD was
originally designed to be
a fallout shelter in case
of attack by Russia in the
1950’s, but was redesigned in the 1990’s to
accommodate
NORAD. It is being redesigned now in 2011 to
meet the new threats of
the 21st century. They
have moved many of the
operations to Peterson
Air Force Base, even
though the official
NORAD is still in operation. To this day,
NORAD has played a
strategic role in the operations of 21st century
war, and is here to stay
for a long time.
Activities & Things to Do—-by Kayla & Isabella
Je m’appelle Kayla et je
m’appelle Isabella. Nous habitent en Colorado Springs,
Colorado. Nous sont dans
huitième grade au North Middle School. There are a lot of
fun activities in Colorado.
Some of our favorites are
going to Elitches and Water
World.
Elitches is an amusement park and water park.
Elitches is seventy acres large
and is located in downtown
Denver. Ticket prices for the
kids and seniors are $29.99
and adult ticket prices is
$42.99. There are over
twenty-three rides that include
six roller coasters and a car-
ousel that has been giving rides
since 1928. The Island Kingdom Water Park includes a
lazy river, a wave pool, and
water slides. Elitch Gardens
had their 120th anniversary in
2010.
Water World is located in Thornton, Colorado
and is sixty-four acres large. A
ticket price for kids is $30.99,
for seniors it’s $6.99, for adults
it’s $35.99, and children less
than 40 inches are admitted
free. Water World operates
late-May through Labor Day
and opened in 1979. Elitches
et Water World sont juste un
peu bonne chose à faire dans
Colorado.
Bonjour! Nous
s’appelle Lauren et Claudia.
Nous allons à
North Middle
School. Nous
sommes va à
parle le temps
de Colorado
Springs. Il est
très beau! The
weather in
Colorado
Springs is interesting and changes
very fast. Most of the
time it is sunny and
dry. The mountains
cause the weather to
change quickly and we
never know when it is
going to rain, snow, or
shine. The highest
temperature recorded
in the Springs is 101
degrees Fahrenheit and
the lowest is negative
32 degrees Fahrenheit.
We have a saying here:
“If you don’t like the
weather in Colorado
Springs, wait 10 minutes and it will
change.”

Scottish Festival—by Fiona
Salut! Je m’appelle Fiona. Dans Colorado,
il y a une très bien festival. It is called “The
Scottish Irish Highlands Festival”. Il est le
neuf, dix, et onze septembre. The cost is
$25 for an adult. My great grand father is
from Scotland, so every year my family
goes to Estes
Park (which is in
Colorado) to
visit the festival.
The morning of
the festival, we
go and watch the
parade, where
people with
Scottish or Irish
backgrounds
walk through the streets of Estes Park
wearing kilts and dresses. They also walk
with a bunch of Scottish or Irish dogs
around, and this year they had camels. We
then go and get on a shuttle that takes us
to the festival grounds. We pay for the
tickets (or we buy then online beforehand)
and receive a blue wristband at the gate,
then enter the fair grounds. Once you
enter the fair, there are tons of activities to
choose from. There is jousting, where
people ride on horses straight at each
other and try to hit a target on the other
player’s shield with a long pole (later in the
day, they try to knock each other off of the
horse). There are also lots of concerts with
guitarists, violinists, people playing bagpi-
pes, bands, and dancers. Also, you can
watch border collies herd sheep and dogs
do tricks and agility, and you can even
adopt a dog or cat. There is a lot of good
(but expensive) food, such as funnel cake,
sweet potato fries, and (my mom’s personnel favorite) sugar covered almonds. They
even have a big trebuchet that they use to
fire bowling balls into a lake, where floats a
blow up lochness monster, Nessy, who is a
well-recognized Scottish folklore. Finally,
my favorite, there are lots of huge white
tents that hold tons of merchandise- kilts,
shirts, Scottish and Irish attire, music, just
about everything. If you ever come to
Colorado, the Scottish festival is definitely
worth looking into.
Old Colorado City —By Angela & Valerie
Bonjour! Nous nous appelons Angela et Valérie. Colorado est très intéressant. Il
est très joli parce que nous
avons les montagnes. There are
a lot of things to do in Colorado
Springs, but one of the coolest
things to do is visit Old Colorado
City. One thing to do is go to A
Taste of Old Colorado City. This
is where people drink wine, taste
food, and also admire the beautiful art. Some of the proceeds help
former military troops and veterans. Another event in Old Colorado City is Territory Days. It lasts
three days and there are craft
and food booths set up on the
street for people to buy things
from.
There are some of the
best restaurants in Old Colorado
City. One of them is the Colorado
Creamery. You can make your
own sundae or just hang out. On
Saturdays, there is a farmer’s
market set up for people to sell
their locally grown produce or
homemade jerky.
There are a bunch of original
stores here as well. One of them
is called Barracuda Bazaar. They
sell vintage clothes and jewelry.
At Elly Blue, you are most likely
to find denim clothes, like jackets
and pants. Angela’s personal favorite is called Colorado Tees.
They sell sweatshirts, hats and,
of course, t-shirts.
Manitou Springs—By Valerie & Angela
Il y a une petite ville a cote Colorado Springs. Il s’appelle Manitou
Springs. Il y a beaucoup de magasins
dans Manitou. Il y a une boutique s’applait
Le Grand Boutique. There are a lot of cool
things in Le Grand Boutique, but it is
mainly for women.
There are a lot of nifty things you
can do in the Manitou area as well. One
thing you can do is go panning for gold at
the Garden of the Gods Trading Post.
They have a bucket that you buy for six
dollars (about four Euros) filled with sand.
In the sand there are semi-precious
stones you can find by panning in their
outdoor “creek.” (it isn’t really a
creek) You can also go horseback
riding at the Academy Riding Stables.
They take you on a guided tour that
goes through Garden of the Gods.
You can choose from one hour rides
or two hour rides. For one person, a
one hour ride costs 42 dollars. (about
31 Euros)
There are a lot of great restaurants in Manitou Springs as
well. One that Valerie likes is called
Naturally’s. They have a lot of organic and vegetarian/vegan choices.
Valerie’s favorite thing they have is
the Nacho Average Nachos. They also
have a magnificent ginger ale. If you like
candy, then the Goldminer’s Nuts and
Candy store is a fantastic pick. They have
a huge assortment of candy, sold in bulk.
Manitou has an annual coffin race as well.
People decorate coffins and race them
down the street in honor of Emma Crawford. She wished to buried on top of Red
Mountain, but the gravel gave way and
her coffin slid down the mountain. Manitou also holds a number of other festivals
including a pie baking contest. Overall,
Manitou is a very cool place. Au Revior!

Centre Ville—by Kesiah & Cassandra
Bonjour! Nous nous appelons Kesiah et Cassandra.
Nous habite Colorado Springs.
Cassandra habite centre-ville de
Colorado Springs. Kesiah veut
habite centre-ville de Colorado
Springs, mais elle n’a pas. Nous
adore la culture des Français.
In Colorado Springs there
are lots of fun things to do downtown. Through the summer, up
until October 10th there is a farmers market, people bring locally
grown food and sell it, and it’s
fresh. A locally owned café near
our school that a lot of the kids
like to go to called Dogtooth.
They have some of the most
amazing smoothies there, Kesiah’s favorite is the strawberry
one. YUM. Cassandra loves the
coffee there and always gets a
mocha. Another place that you
just have to go to is called Poor
Richards bookstore. It’s a used
bookstore and it’s really cool because there are so many books
and little trinkets that are pretty
interesting. The owner of Poor
Richards owns 5 stores: Poor
Richards Bookstore, Poor Richards Restaurant, Little Richards
Toy Store, Rico’s café, and
Patricia’s Riches Card and Gift
shop. The bookstore, Rico’s café,
the toy store, and the restaurant
are right next to each other and
you can walk through one store to
the other. We love downtown because there are so many interesting stores that you can’t find anywhere else. There is just about
everything that you could ever
need there.
The food downtown is
awesome. There are a variety of
types of restaurants ranging from
Greek food to Mexican and everything in between. There are
French restaurants that are said
to be fantastic.
We love the art’s here.
There are many performing arts
studio’s and theaters downtown.
The Colorado Springs Conservatory is a performing arts studio for
kids and there shows are great.
We have an art museum called
the Fine Art’s Center that we take
field trips to a lot. They always
have exhibits there that are eye
catching and we love going there
because there’s always something new. We love going downtown because you’re never
bored.
Colorado 14ers-By Tess & Rene
Pikes Peak
Le Colorado
est un
très bon
endroit pour vivre. There is so much
to do here, and it is all very friendly.
One of the more popular attractions
in Colorado are all the mountains,
specifically all the 14,000 ft peaks
we call “14ers”. There are a total of
53 14ers in all of Colorado. Les personnes faire une randonnée sur le
montagnes. The mountain in our
town, Colorado Springs, is Pikes
Peak. Pikes Peak is a popular 14er
that has a special trail called the
incline. The incline is a vertical trail
running up half of Pikes Peak. It is
made of old rail road ties, that serve
as stairs up the mountain. People
climb the incline as a daily workout
or just to get outside. You can do
many other things on these mountains like ski, snowboard, paraglide,
or mountain bike.
Local Zoos—by Ben
Feeding the
giraffes
Despite Colorado's vast
amount of activities and
places to visit it only has
two zoo's that I know of. One,
The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, is
here in Colorado Springs. The
other is in Denver, and is
appropriately named The Denver
Zoo. It's around an hour away
by car, but the trip is worth
it. It has way more animals
then the Cheyenne Mountain,
including the exotic Polar
Bear. Part of the exhibit is
underwater, which offers the
bears countless hours of enjoyment. Here in the springs
the zoo mostly has animals
like Zebras, Elephants, and
Giraffes. However it does have
unique learning opportunities
available nowhere else. On my
most recent visit there I got
to see their veterinary
clinic, a dead penguin, and a
tortoise that had been stepped
on by a giraffe. But it will
probably never have the hundreds of different types of
fish, a huge reptile exhibit,
and all the amazing animals
the Denver Zoo has. Le denver
zoo est bon et le Cheynne
mountain zoo is Bon. Le fin.

Balloon Glow
Bonjour on ami! On s’appelle Ashley et Sylvie. Nous habitons en Colorado Springs, Colorado. The population here is
416,427. Here in Colorado we have special festivals. In spring we
have Spring Spree. Amusement rides
are arranged and there’s a big carnival. In fall, we have the Balloon
Glow. In the morning, hot air balloons fly up in the air and take
people for rides. Unfortunately
we’ve never been on one. At night
they glow and there’s lots of food
like funnel cakes and giant turkey
legs. Ashley and I were just at the
balloon glow and trust me it’s a lot
of fun! En été il y a un Greek festival. You eat Greek food and dance
around. There is also the State
Fair, which is in Pueblo, Colorado.
There are rides and food and prizes. Thanks For reading our review
of seasonal festivals in Colorado!

gallery is showcased.
Of course, we don’t just

Girl’s Sports—By Cameron & Leta
Bonjour! On s’appelle Cameron
Rojewski et Leta Mcwilliams. Nous sont
filles et nous adore sport. Nous habite en
Colorado Springs, CO par le montagnes.
Comment allez-vous?
At our school the sports avaliable for girls are Volleyball, Basketball,
and Track and Field. We like to participate in Track. Track is mostly running and
field events like long jump and high jump.
Leta does Long Jump, and Cameron runs
sprints. Otherwise we do not play any
other sports in school.
However we like to play lacrosse. It is not available at our school,
but there are teams outside of school
that we play in. Right now our team
name is Sharp Shooters. In lacrosse there
are posistions like defense, offense,
goalie, and center. Cameron plays de-
fense and protects the goalie, Leta plays
offense and tries to score on the other
team’s goalie for points. Each game
ranges from one to twenty points.
Lacrosse is not as common in
other states as it is in Colorado. Almost
every high school has a lacrosse team for
boys and girls. Playing lacrosse sometimes is beneficial because many colleges
offer scholarships.

Boys’ Sports– By Pablo & John
Bonjour! Colorado has many sports
that are available for boys here. We
have many varieties to choose from.
For example football is a great sport to
play. It is not the sport where you kick
a ball into a net. That is soccer, or at
least in America it is. Football you
carry the ball and run on a field and
score touchdowns. But that is not all
the sports that are available. There is
soccer, the version of football that is
familiar to Europe and Mexico. There’s
also baseball, a sport where you can
hit a ball with a stick called a bat. You
run bases and score on the fourth one.
Basketball is also very popular. It’s the
sport where you dribble a ball and
shoot it through a hoop or net. Track is
also very popular, especially in Colorado. Colorado Springs is a great place
to run track, because of its great cross
country and running terrain. Track is
also very hard because our altitude
makes us get tired faster. A sport
called lacrosse is very popular here in
Colorado Springs. This sport isn’t very
well known, but it is growing very rapidly. Basically, it is almost every sport
combined. You play by passing a ball
by throwing it with a stick. The stick
has a net on the top where you can
catch it. You score points by throwing
it into a goal.
Cest quelques du sport qui
Colorado a pour garcons de notre age.
Le sport son tres interesant et amuser.
C’est epique!
USAFA
football
Professional sports—by Estephan & James
Bonjour! On s’appelle James et
Estephan. Ici, dans le Colorado, nous
avons beaucoup de différents sports
professionnels. These sports include
football(the American type with tackling, not the type where you kick a
ball around the field). basketball, and
baseball. For our football we have the
professional Denver Broncos, and
the semi-pro college team,the Air
Force Falcons. The Broncos started
they’re season 2 weeks ago with a
loss to their rival, the Oakland Raiders. But they’re second game, against
the Cincinnati Bengals, was a win of
22-24. The Air Force Falcons haven’t
played lately so far as i know, so
there is no interesting news. We get
to watch the Broncos every Sunday
and Monday, and the Falcons on
some Saturdays. For basketball we
have the Denver Nuggets, named
after the gold nugget found around
Pikes Peak during the gold rush.
They haven’t started their season yet
so we’ll have to wait for news on that
end. For baseball we have the professional Colorado Rockies, named
after the mountain chain that runs
down the heart of the US. We also
have the semi-professional Sky Sox.
The Rockies have had a humiliating
season this year with a startling reality that they may well end up in last
place .This is because of injuries to
some of their best players such as;
Carlos Gonzalez (Cargo for short),
Troy Tulowitzki(Tulo for short), and
Todd Helton, who doesn’t really have
a nickname. Now due to all these
losses they can’t stand a chance
against any of their rivals, like the
San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, or New York Yankees. The
Sky Sox have had a rather good season this year beating the Sacramento
River Cats 6-5 in ten innings(aka
rounds or quarters in other sports).
Besides all these we have numerous
other minor leagues and lacrosse
(which was invented by Indians if you
didn’t already know) and even an
Olympic Training Center for athletes
and members of the US Olympics
team. Bonsoir!
Votre amis,
James et Estephan
Skiing & Snowboarding—by Amber & Cassie N
Colorado is an
amazing state.
There are so many
fun activities that
you can do. One
of those awesome
and fun activities
are skiing and snowboarding. Colorado
is basically the BEST place in the
U.S.A. that you can go skiing and
snowboarding. Nous j'adore faire du
ski et snowboard. We have tall moun-
tains and in the winter those mountains are covered with a thick blanket
of snow. Skiing and snowboarding are
very popular here in Colorado, every
winter thousands of people come to
one of the many places to ski and
snowboard. Some of the most popular
places are Monarch Mountain, Ski Cooper, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge,
Keystone, Loveland, Copper Mountain,
Echo Mountain, Vail , Snowmass and
Aspen. At these places you have a
variety of slopes to go on, such as: the
bunny slope, a green slope, a blue
slope, a black diamond, a double black
diamond and a terrain park where you
can do tricks and show off your fancy
moves. The prices are fairly good and
reasonable, depending on where you
go. Le plus lieu sont a un prix bon! We
hope that you can visit Colorado and
come skiing and snowboarding. Il y a
très s'amuser!
