It’s walker-friendly and often hosts groups of trekkers, rock-climbers, and those who are seeking the “real” and off-the-beaten-path Provence. Your hosts – a family of three siblings – are third generation owners and are part of the last people in Provence to speak the Provençal language fluently. Intentionally, the guest house’s philosophy is to keep its amenities modest: fresh bread, homemade jams and hot drinks for breakfast, simple amenities in the rooms (though bathrooms in all), no TV, no internet access, and because of its remote canyon location, there’s no cell phone reception. Many, including us, call this bliss. But those seeking technology, sophistication, and luxury should abstain. It even says so on their website BREAKFAST We are very aware that breakfast is important as you will be hiking / cycling for the day You are staying in small and charming hotels & guest houses. All of them propose a CONTINENTAL breakfast, that includes: breads, pastries, butter, jams, juice, and hot drinks. Some of them may also propose ham, cheese, eggs, fruits, yoghurt, etc.. In any case, keep in mind that in Provence (and France in general) breakfast will always be different in every hotel. If you have particular needs for breakfast ( eggs, ham ..) we highly recommend that you discuss it with the owner one evening ahead : If you kindly ask for some scrambled/fried eggs for example, most of your hosts will be very happy to organize it for you if possible. It may be with a supplement, it may not.. it depends on the accommodation Walk Inn Provence.com - Active Travel Company - 30 Bd Paul Floret - 84000 AVIGNON - France Tel: +33 (0)4 86 65 00 20 - Fax: +33 (0)4 90 87 70 55 - Sarl Walk Inn - Travel agency n°: IM084100007 – Updated on 2016, Aug 30th- FT-AL0 – Page 11 / 37 The Finest Walking and Cycling YOUR MEALS 7 breakfasts (continental) 1 dinner (starter, main dish and a desert ) in hotels or local restaurants Drinks are NEVER included with dinners. A headlamp always comes in handy.. FOR YOUR DINNERS INCLUDED IN YOUR TRIP: We have selected for you (sometimes prepaid) a menu for your dinner For example : o we selected the menu at 38€ = that will be notified on your voucher of course o Once there, you want to give you a treat ( you’re on holidays ) and would rather go for the menu at 48€ OR you want to choose from the “A la carte” o No problem: you can choose whatever you wish : you will just have to pay the difference ! o Keep in mind that drinks are NEVER included in the restaurant budget The restaurants have been booked for you, should you not be able to come: please contact the restaurant. Not included: All lunches &dinners not noted/included, drinks. DIETARY RESTRICTIONS Most of the hotels & restaurants can accommodate a vegetarian diet, or other restrictions (gluten free, etc.): we frequently have vegetarians on our tours. Please let us know so that we can inform the restaurants and the hotels en route. However, please remind your hotels / guest houses / restaurants upon arrival of your dietary restrictions, whatever they may be. Though we are very careful to remind our service providers of your dietary restrictions, reminders are always helpful. Gluten-free diets can be sometimes complicated in France (although it is getting better ..), and not all hotels have access to gluten-free breads. To err on the side of caution, please stock-up on gluten-free products before you begin your tour. Most organic food shops carry gluten-free products YOUR TRANSFERS Day 2: transfer from Avignon to St Rémy de Provence to the start of your walk Day 3: transfer from the end of your walk to Gordes Day 5: transfer from Gordes to the start of your walk Day 5: transfer from the end of your walk to Bonnieux ( except when you choose the SIMPLE acc.) There are no dress codes in France, and you do not necessarily need to bring fancy clothes for dining, even in a Michelin Starred restaurant LUGGAGE STORAGE There is a new luggage storage in Avignon since 2016. That can be useful if you plan to just spend a day in Avignon, to enjoy the visit, before continuing onwards. Furthermore, if we need to reach you, it is easier if you have a cell phone. The easiest option is to come with your cellular phone to France You can then buy a “FRENCH Sim card” in a phone shop It will cost you anywhere from 10€, and allows you to call French telephone numbers with internet access You will then be able to call French phone numbers, and use Internet, and it is relatively inexpensive There are a few phone shops in towns such as: Avignon Bouygues Telecom - 13 Place du change SFR – 11 rue de la République – Avignon Most of the shop are open Monday to Saturday from 10am > 7pm St Remy de Provence Gala Phone – 6 rue Roger Salengro – St Remy de Provence Arles SFR – 22 Bd des Lices – Avignon St Remy de Provence Gala Phone – 6 rue Roger Salengro – St Remy de Provence Marseille Bouygues Telecom - 7 Rue de le république - Marseille Beware that there are NO phone shops in Isle sur la Sorgue ! TIPPING IN PROVENCE In France, service is included in all restaurant and hotel rates, and tips are not required anywhere. Wait staff aren’t paid a below-minimum-wage in compensation for the “mandatory” 15% tip, such as in Canada or in the USA. On any restaurant bill in France it can be read at the bottom that it’s “service compris” = service included. However, if a customer has genuinely enjoyed their meal and their service at a restaurant, they can leave anywhere from 2-5€ per couple as a tip on a bill of say, 50 to 100€. It’s more of a symbolic thanks than a percentage tip. After all, the French word for a tip is “pourboire” : literally meaning “ for a drink” If the food/service is poor or average, we don’t leave a tip – nor does anyone else. In very expensive hotels/restaurants, the staff are” used” to being tipped, as they welcome a large percentage of Anglophone guests. This still does not require you to tip. YOUR PERSONAL EXPENSES Prepare a budget for meals not included in your trip (about 10€ to 20€ for lunch, 20€ to 30 € for dinners), drinks, entrance fees for museums and monuments, personal expenses. Most Post office have ATM .. but not all of them ! Make sure to have some cash with you, as there aren’t always ATM machines in small villages. Walk Inn Provence.com - Active Travel Company - 30 Bd Paul Floret - 84000 AVIGNON - France Tel: +33 (0)4 86 65 00 20 - Fax: +33 (0)4 90 87 70 55 - Sarl Walk Inn - Travel agency n°: IM084100007 – Updated on 2016, Aug 30th- FT-AL0 – Page 14 / 37 The Finest Walking and Cycling YOUR WALKS PARTICULAR DIFFICULTIES The terrain is very easy, and there is some climbing along the way, up to medieval villages such as Gordes, Goult, and Bonnieux, none of which is steep. There is never more than 1 hour of climbing at a time, and you have all day to do a maximum of 4 ½ hours of walking, so you can really take your time along way. Make sure to get an early start if the weather is warm. Though you don’t need hiking experience to enjoy this walk, you should be used to walking and exercise in general. WALKING POLES We recommend using walking poles for this holiday. Poles are helpful to increase power going uphill, but especially to relieve your knees going down hills. Walking poles takes some time to get used to: we recommend that you walk with them before coming to Provence. ITINERARY Our itineraries are more often than not waymarked and on well-defined paths, tracks, and sometimes back country roads. The trails can be rocky; good boots with ankle support are highly recommended. You will be in a zone where water is scarce; you will have to bring enough water with you each day as there is little if not no areas to fill up during the walk. WAY MARKINGS Way marking of paths consists of painted blazes or dots on trees, rocks, walls, and poles. Depending on the terrain, the frequency of way marking can vary. WARNING Sometimes way marking is less visible, hidden by growth or vanished. Despite all our care to update the description of our itineraries, there can be changes on the ground. Fallen trees and bad weather can alter way markings and paths, as can human factors: new agricultural or forestry paths, urbanization, road work, vandalism, etc. These factors can alter not only way markings but also walking routes, as well as the walking signs that indicate place-names and different directions. ACCESS TO PATHS IN THE SUMMER – IMPORTANT From the 1st of June until the 30th of September access to forest paths may be forbidden or partially restricted (access until 11:00am) if the risk of forest fire is high in the Alpilles & the Luberon At 6:00pm the local prefecture creates an automated telephone message for the following day's access; the information is also available on the internet. You are responsible for getting this information.
