LOGISTICS FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULES AT CESTAS POWER PLANT STRENGTHS > Extensive forward planning and strong commitment by all partners. > Control of the whole supply chain, including our suppliers, to ensure schedule and quality compliance. > Dedicated industrial organisation for a 250 ha worksite. In less than a year, Clemessy (with specialist support from Eiffage Énergie, Eiffage Energia and the Infrastructure division) has designed and built Europe’s largest photovoltaic power plant, located in Cestas in France’s Gironde department. The 250 ha solar farm, featuring nearly 985,000 PV modules began operating in October 2015, 11 months after ground was broken. This facility has a total power output of 300 MWp – or 350 GWh/year – equivalent to the domestic electricity consumption of the city of Bordeaux. This exceptional development owes its success to the design and implementation of an extraordinary, yet entirely reproducible, logistics organisation, covering all aspects and all roles involved in the project, from solar panel manufacturers to on-site assembly workers. From project launch to handover, no detail was overlooked, including lead times, quality, photovoltaic module installation times, cabling, electrical cabinet installation, compliance with tax regulations and financing aspects. EMPLOYMENT AND SOCIAL INITIATIVE AWARD DIRECT COMMUNICATION WITH LOCAL RESIDENTS VIA SOCIAL MEDIA STRENGTHS > Close integration with the urban fabric. > Enhanced acceptability of works. > “Wired” worksite. Effective communication with people living and working near a worksite is the best way to help them accept any inconvenience caused by the work. This principle was applied for the project to cover the railway tracks along Avenue de France in Paris’s 13th arrondissement, for which part of the work was carried out at night. This project – known as M9AB – took this social aspect into consideration at the proposal stage (in the technical memorandum) and throughout the subsequent works phase. A communication pack was created, using a combination of conventional and electronic media. Films and informative newsletters were produced. In parallel, the Group communicated directly via social media such as Twitter and Facebook. The solution implemented helped people affected by the project to stay informed regarding work phasing, understand the work and get in touch with the appropriate contacts in the event of a problem. This initiative effectively turned this development project in Paris into a “wired” worksite. SEALING ASPHALT WASTE RECOVERY FOR REUSE IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COATED AGGREGATE STRENGTHS > Conservation of fossil resources. > Cost-effectiveness. > High performance of GB5® maintained. Scrapped production from Siplast’s asphalt-sealed elastomeric sealing membrane business, including edge trimmings, transitional output and non-compliant products, have been given a second lease of life. Staff at Eiffage Route have developed a method for recovering nearly 1,000 tonnes per year of materials previously treated as waste. The new process replaces approximately 20% of the bitumen used in GB5® bitumen-stabilised gravel (a very high-performance coated aggregate developed by Eiffage Route that won the 2013 Eiffage Innovation Award for R&D) with these recovered residues, which contain up to 50% bitumen, a portion of which is highly polymerised. The new formula for GB5® was successfully trialled in combination with recycled coated aggregate at a worksite near Tours. This trial application demonstrated the considerable potential of this technical, environmental and economic innovation. The principle may now be rolled out to sealing materials recovered from demolition sites, which are a potential source of tens of thousands of tonnes of resources a year. STRENGTHS > Environmentally-friendly decontamination method. > Excavated soil can be re-used on-site. > Cost compatible with project requirements. > First trial of its kind in Europe. It is now possible to clean up polluted ground using a low-impact method that harnesses the ability of certain fungi to metabolise hydrocarbons and heavy metals. Eiffage Construction Méditerranée trialled this solution at the site of the Smartseille green neighbourhood in Marseille, operating in partnership with a start-up named Polypop. Following a phase of laboratory tests, mycelium – a non-visible part of fungi – was mixed with 90 cubic metres of excavated earth. After allowing the fungi to develop for three months, analyses revealed a very significant decrease in the concentrations of undesirable substances such as oil-based organic compounds, lead and cadmium. In time, the trialled solution may offer a real alternative to conventional decontamination methods. Rather than being moved to landfill facilities, soil can now be decontaminated and subsequently reused with no need for off-site transport. MOTORWAY CONE LAYING AND COLLECTION SYSTEM STRENGTHS > Safer for operators. > Less arduous work. Laying and collecting motorway lane marking cones can be hazardous for motorway maintenance workers. Around 50 accidents a year occur during cone laying and collection operations, in many cases due to lorries and cars driving too close to the cones. Additionally, cone-laying is an arduous task that places operators in an uncomfortable position, constantly leaning out of their vehicle several feet above the road surface. These issues can be overcome by using a cone laying and collection system. The solution consists of a ramp mounted on the side of the maintenance truck, along which cones are laid and retrieved. Operators work at breast height, making their task less arduous. The system also enhances safety as the operator is positioned away from the line of traffic. In addition, a camera and monitors provide both the driver and the cone laying operator with a clear view of the road and any traffic using the open lanes. STRENGTHS > Suitable for all work sites. > User-friendly design. > Totally mobile application. > Fully interactive drawings. Staff at Eiffage’s Information Systems department partnered with Microsoft France to design and develop an application intended exclusively for use on work sites. This application enables pre-acceptance procedures to be managed electronically; as a result, the reservation clearing process that accompanies the final phase of works can be fully dematerialised. Using the application, reservations can be located and identified, work package by work package, and information relating to subcontractors is integrated in real time. Note that tablet PCs were issued to field operators tasked with pre-acceptance procedures as part of the rollout of this one-of-a-kind software application. Another benefit of this solution is its ability to operate “offline”. This enables it to be used in all work site configurations, even if no network access is available. STRENGTHS > Enhanced road safety. > Environmental protection benefits. > Uses renewable resources. The Pavirex project applies geothermal engineering principles to roads. The aim of the project was to design an intelligent, predictive road surface heating system. The resulting system features pipes supplied with geothermally-heated water, embedded in coated aggregate specially designed to withstand low temperatures. In areas subject to harsh winters, where icing risks are a particular problem, the new process delays the formation of ice on the road surface. The Pavirex system enhances road safety while also decreasing the environmental impacts associated with the use of de-icing agents. The prediction system uses data from temperature and road surface moisture sensors to calculate the probability of imminent icing and activates the road heating system as necessary. Monitoring devices automatically check and confirm the startup instruction to prevent excessive consumption. STRENGTHS > Turnkey organisation as part of an integrated offering. > Building erected in only 24 hours. > Effective cost management. “The right person at the right time.” Such was the mindset throughout the design and construction - in only 24 hours - of a three-storey building erected on the sidelines of the Eiffage conference in Rennes in early July 2015. Ground was broken at 8.30 a.m. on 1 st July. Work was completed by the same time on the 2nd July. The showcase building featured a 60 sq. m apartment on the ground floor, and an 80 sq. m duplex apartment with patios on the other two floors. It was fully equipped and ready for use, hence the name “Plug & Play”. This operation owed its success to the adoption of a “turnkey project” organisational approach. During 24 weeks of intensive preparations, project management worked closely with the heads of the design and works teams. This operational approach kept the cost of the structure under control and made it possible to define and plan every detail of the project, from component prefabrication to on-site assembly. In all, 20 people worked on the building’s design, and another 30 on its construction. TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE FIELD - INFRASTRUCTURES DEVELOPMENT OF AN ULTRA-COMPACT, AUTONOMOUS MOBILE CONCRETE BATCHING PLANT STRENGTHS > Concrete production in any location, particularly at compact and/or isolated worksites subject to severe access restrictions (e.g. rail projects, electrical infrastructure, offshore works and tunnels). > Complies with road and rail tunnel gauge requirements. > High production quality. > Rapid set-up. The multiple difficulties entailed with the Monaco rail tunnel strengthening project (20 hours-per-day shift working isolated from the outside world, inside a tunnel open to passenger traffic) required a boldly inventive approach by Eiffage Génie Civil Côte d’Azur, in order to complete the work successfully. One of the many challenges was the need to be able to produce concrete in situ at all times, completely autonomously. A compact “container-format” mobile concrete batching plant was designed and built to meet the project’s specific requirements. The new plant is suitable for use on all types of rail, road and offshore/river work sites, as it complies with the gauges and dimensional constraints associated with such operating conditions. It is designed to be set up quickly - in just two hours - and produce concrete for engineering structures of equivalent quality to that supplied by a standard ready-mix plant. SCREW-IN PILE FOUNDATIONS FOR SITE ACCOMMODATION STRENGTHS > Optimised worksite schedule. > Cost savings. > Ease of use. > Land left in good condition. Bore a hole, screw in a pile... what could be simpler? Using screw-threaded piles as a foundation for prefabricated worksite accommodation is an extremely simple technique that is also much faster to deploy than conventional solutions based on concrete ground beams. The new technique eliminates the need to assign earthmoving equipment and pour concrete for site accommodation foundations. The piling system can be used on all types of ground, at all types of worksite, however large or small. The threaded piles may be installed immediately upon delivery, using a special-purpose machine supplied by the manufacturer. Each pile is designed to withstand a load of up to 6 tonnes. During the site demobilisation phase, the piles are easily removed by unscrewing them, enabling them to be reused in subsequent projects. Furthermore, no soil remediation work is required after removing the piles. This is yet another advantage that helps to streamline worksite schedules and generate cost savings. TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE FIELD - ENERGY TEMPORARY LED WORKSITE LIGHTING STRENGTHS > Shorter installation times offsetting the higher purchase cost. > Suitable for all worksites. > Low power consumption. Temporary lighting must systematically be installed when working inside buildings. In the past, this phase - necessarily carried out before beginning the actual work - consisted in setting up fluorescent lamps or tubes in an often long, painstaking operation. This type of installation also inevitably left certain areas in shadow, creating a potential source of accidents. The solution developed by Eiffage Énergie Alsace Franche-Comté replaces the conventional temporary lighting installation with strings of LED lamps. These flexible lighting strings, several metres long, offer numerous benefits: they can be installed quickly in any worksite layout and are reusable and energy-efficient while providing a uniform lighting level that helps to keep site personnel safe. TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE FIELD - APRR GROUP SEALED MOBILE BOX FOR SEMI-TRAILER, SALT SPREADER AND BRINE SPRAYER LANDING GEAR STRENGTHS > Secure exterior equipment storage. > Decreased handling risks. > Produced using recycled products. Staff at AREA have designed a novel solution for safely storing the support legs used on truck semi-trailers in summer, and on salt spreaders and brine sprayers in winter. The new product is a closed, moveable box in which the equipment is stored. It is fitted with two metal tubes at the bottom of the box, enabling it to be handled using a fork lift truck. The storage box provides several benefits. Firstly, it limits the need for landing gear handling operations by enabling them to be moved close to the point of use, significantly decreasing the risk of accident. Secondly, the box provides fully enclosed outdoor storage, releasing indoor space for other plant and equipment. Last but not least, the box is manufactured partly from recycled metal (used traffic signs).
