42 prizes awarded to dynamic, ambitious young entrepreneurs across Quebec
QUEBEC CITY (Quebec), Wednesday, June 19, 2012—The Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest announced the big
winners for 2012 at the Desjardins Provincial Grand Prize Gala, under the honorary presidency of Sophie
Brochu, president and CEO of Gaz Métro, and attended by Sam Hamad, Minister of Economic Development,
Innovation and Export Trade. For the 14th edition, a total of 3,490 projects and 46,988 participants competed
in two divisions: Business Creation and Student Entrepreneurship. Over the course of the evening, more than
42 prizes were awarded, with a total value of $230,000. The finalists already shared $319,000 in the regional
finals this past May.
The event’s honorary president, Sophie Brochu, spoke of her respect and admiration for the new generation of
entrepreneurs. “Thank you for your fearless leadership, which creates jobs and enriches Quebec. You are a
great source of inspiration to us all.”
Representing Mouvement Desjardins, a partner of the Contest since its inception, was Liliane Laverdière, vicepresident, business development, for eastern Quebec. “Mouvement Desjardins is proud to support the
development of entrepreneurial culture in the next generation, which we believe is vital to Quebec’s continued
prosperity. As well, we’re especially pleased with the new partnership between the Contest and the Desjardins
Foundation, which offers scholarships to the winners in the Student Entrepreneurship section in each of the
province’s 17 regions.”
Natacha Jean, the contest’s president and general director, was highly impressed with the quality of this year’s
finalists and winners. “In recent months, I’ve had the good fortune to meet hundreds of entrepreneurs over
thousands of square kilometres. They made me realize the degree to which Quebec is a hotbed of creativity
