When students are encouraged to view reading as a natural, enjoyable activity, they develop reading skills that they will use forever. The combination of the amusing, accessible format of bandes dessinées, accompanied by the new activities and Teacher’s Editions are a perfect way to help youngsters acquire an early love of reading. The 16 readers are short, thematic, full-colour, humorous stories in bandes dessinée format — a format youngsters associate with reading for fun. This format is, due to its “dialogue-only” nature, rich in visual cues and highly communicative. The visual dimension of the bande dessinée serves to render a foreign language accessible to the student. It can convey mood, establish a context and, through gestures and facial expressions, encourage students to infer meaning and take risks, just as one does in real-life language interaction. Each story contains an real-life theme (sports, ordering snacks and meals, clowns & emotions, emergencies, etc.). In this series, of course, every effort has been made to ensure a balanced representation of gender and race. The cahier d’activités comprises richly-illustrated prereading, reading, post-reading activities and comprehension activities. The activities have been designed to foster reading-related techniques such as contextualization, predicting, silent and oral reading, whole class discussion, inferencing, decoding, gisting and summarizing. The Bande Dessinée as a pedagogical tool The bande dessinée, as a pedagogical tool, is one which has never been adequately exploited by teachers of French as a second language. Because of the association, often unconscious, of the bande dessinée with a lower order of literacy, it has never taken its rightful place as an invaluable component in the language learning process. As teachers, however, it is our duty to recognize that all students learn at different rates and in different ways and to provide them with the materials to ensure their success in the French classroom. In this light, the bande dessinée has much to commend it. It is, in the first instance, an exceptional motivational device. Its represents a form of communication with which all students are familiar and one which, unlike dense prose, is associated in the adolescent mind with reading for pleasure. The visual dimension of the bande dessinée serves to render a foreign language accessible to the student. It can convey a mood, establish a context and, through gestures and facial expressions, encourage students to infer meaning and take risks, just as one does in real-life language interaction. The visual impact of the bande dessinée is, of course, equally reflected in its capacity to convey humour, an essential facet not only of literature but of life itself. By the same token, the visual power of the bande dessinée can be exploited with great success to make a broad range of French culture immediately accessible to students by offering them glimpses of daily life. The Teacher’s Editions are flexible, and allow for many different uses of the activities. The eight-step lesson plan, provided in each Teacher’s Edition, provides an easy-to-follow, natural path to reading proficiency. In addition, more teaching suggestions appear on each page of the Teacher’s Edition. These Editions have been designed with you in mind — they are clear, simple, concise and easy to use. Teaching suggestions, an activity sequence and a display of the student’s cahier with all answers are presented on each page. From the linguistic perspective, the bande dessinée is an ideal vehicle to provide students with the relevant vocabulary and communicative framework to explore a specific theme. This is, indeed, what we have done in the Collection Bandes Dessinées. Audio-cassettes feature a dramatic reading of eight stories with background sound effects and music. In the final analysis, The Collection Bandes Dessinées has been conceived to stir the imagination of the student, to motivate him to learn French and, most importantly, to speak to him in a language he accepts and understands. If you use the Addison-Wesley Visages program, you’ll be pleased to see that each Bandes Dessinée title is correlated to a Visages theme. Please see the attached flyer for details on theme correlation. This new series makes reading accessible and fun for beginners, covers age-appropriate themes, and provides teachers with complete, flexible and practical teaching suggestions. Pedagogically, the bande dessinée is a medium of exceptional flexibility. It can be used for both oral and written practice, for vocabulary expansion and reinforcement, as well as to test comprehension. It is exceedingly versatile and may be adapted to suit the needs of classes which display a wide range of abilities. Have fun! Specific activities have been designed to foster and develop the following reading-related techniques: • contextualization • inferencing • predicting • summarizing • silent and oral reading • gisting • whole-class discussion • decoding ACTIVITY SEQUENCE The following step-by-step activity sequence is general in nature and applies to all readers in the Collection BANDES DESSINÉES. Teaching suggestions specific to each bande dessinée will be found on the appropriate pages of each teacher’s guide. STEP 1 SETTING A CONTEXT This activity establishes the context of the story. • Invite students to discuss the title and cover (or interior illustrations) of the reader. As you display the illustration, introduce students to the main characters. • Have students complete the activity Les personnages in their cahier d’activités. • Verify the answers with the whole class. STEP 2 MAKING PREDICTIONS This whole-class discussion arouses students’ curiosity and encourages them to predict elements of the story. • As you display the illustration once again, ask students to predict certain details of the story. For example, ask them to guess where the characters are, why they are there, and what they are doing. • Have students complete the activity Mes prédictions in their cahier. • Once students have read the story, verify with them the accuracy of their predictions. STEP 3 READING SILENTLY As in any reading activity, it is possible for students to acquire a broad understanding of the story by “gisting” details. Encourage them to examine the pictures and the facial expressions of the characters for a general understanding of the story. • Invite students to read the story silently. • If unfamiliar words hamper students’ general comprehension, refer them to the lexique at the back of their reader. STEP 4 BUILDING VOCABULARY Students’ reading proficiency will improve as they learn to decode new vocabulary by looking for words of the same family and FrenchEnglish cognates. Encourage them, as well, to guess at meaning according to the context of the unfamiliar word or expression. • After the first silent reading of the story, have students complete the activities Ça se ressemble! and C’est la même chose! in their cahier. • Have students re-read the story. By completing the activities in their cahier, their understanding of the story will be further enhanced. STEP 5 ROLE-PLAYING Reading in a second language requires learning a new coding system. Students do not have the cues — attitude, gestures, facial expressions, intonation, and tone of voice — that are available to them in a conversational framework. This is why oral and aural support is so helpful. • Play the audio cassette (or read the story aloud) as students follow along in their books. • Play the cassette a second time (or re-read the story aloud), stopping to allow students to repeat each segment. Encourage them to pay attention to pronunciation and intonation. • Have students role-play the story. STEP 6 CHECKING COMPREHENSION Post-reading activities include asking and answering questions, completing a variety of comprehension activities, and discussing the story. • Ask brief questions about the content of the story. • Have students work in pairs to ask and answer questions as they refer to the pictures in the reader. To foster success in this activity, write simple questions on the board or on chart paper, e.g., Qui est-ce? Qu’est-ce que c’est? Comment s’appelle-t-il/elle? Où est-il? Où sont-ils? etc. • Complete orally the first three Exercices at the back of the reader. In the case of the first activity (Vrai ou Faux? ) have students provide the correct response if the statement is false. • Have students summarize the story by completing the activity Je sais lire! in their cahier. STEP 7 ANSWERING PERSONAL QUESTIONS The last activity in the reader (Et toi...? ) is designed to allow students to relate the content of the story to their personal experience. • Ask selected students to answer the questions. You may wish to write key expressions on the board, on chart paper, or on an acetate. • Have students work in pairs to ask and answer the questions. STEP 8 BUILDING LANGUAGE SKILLS These activities are designed to reinforce vocabulary and language patterns, as well as to provide enrichment by exploiting the theme of the reader. • Have students complete the activities in their cahier. • Verify the answers with the whole class.
