SIDA, EXCLUSION ET SPIRITUALITÉ (Colloque 417)
Le caractère pandémique du VIH\sida fait désormais de cette maladie un signifiant
privilégié de la mort, comparable à ce qu’a pu représenter la peste en d’autres temps. Il
provoque à ce titre des transformations majeures des représentations associées au sens
de la vie. À l’instar de toute maladie, le sida représente aussi une coupure
incontournable dans le déroulement normal de la vie, son association à des pratiques
sexuelles considérées comme risquées amplifiant par ailleurs cette coupure pour en faire
une véritable exclusion, interdisant d’autant les possibilités de parole et de symbolisation
à son égard. On sait par ailleurs que les discours religieux et (ou) spirituels ont aussi une
incidence évaluable sur ces possibilités de symbolisation, tant par les morales qu’ils
proposent que par les représentations du sens qu’ils mettent en scène.
Comment la réalité du sida met-elle en cause l’imaginaire collectif et les savoirs
concernant les comportements humains? Quelles reconstructions de l’univers
symbolique exige-t-elle? La contribution des spiritualités et des religions à cette
reconstruction est-elle pensable? Jusqu’à quel point et comment peut-on lui reconnaître
un caractère opérationnel, tant dans la prévention et la cure que dans le rétablissement
rendu désormais possible par les multi-thérapies?
Devant ces questions, le colloque entend proposer une exploration très ouverte qui
viserait à ne négliger aucun aspect du phénomène : épidémiologique, biologique,
socioculturel, éthique, psychologique et spirituel. S’inscrivant dans le développement
d’une première table de travail tenue en octobre 2004, il regroupe pour cela des
chercheurs et chercheuses qui, tout en provenant d’horizons disciplinaires divers,
travaillent activement à ces questions.

L’extrémisme religieux n’est pas un phénomène nouveau, ni même récent. En effet,
depuis la nuit des temps la religion déchaîne les passions et suscite d’innombrables
controverses. Des croisades, de l’Inquisition et des guerres de religion, aux militants
islamiques, aux milices chrétiennes radicales, aux Juifs ultra-orthodoxes contemporains
ou à certains nouveaux mouvements religieux apocalyptiques (Appleby, 2000 et
Juergensmeyer, 2000; Stern, 2003), le religieux a toujours suscité des positions extrêmes en
temps de crise sociale et politique.
Cependant il est possible de tirer des leçons de l’histoire des groupes extrémistes d’hier
pour comprendre ceux d’aujourd’hui et le contexte dans lequel leurs actions
s’enracinent et se déroulent. Notre intention dans ce colloque est de comprendre et de
définir l’extrémisme religieux autant comme force de «destruction extrême» (par
exemple, le terrorisme religieux) que de «construction extrême» (par exemple, les missions
de conversion des Franciscains, des Dominicains et des Jésuites en Amérique au début
de la colonisation (Rigard-Cellard, 2004), les ONGs confessionnelles (Appleby, 2000). En
fait, ce qu’il y a de nouveau aujourd’hui, c’est la globalisation des extrémismes religieux
comme modèles de résistance à l’hégémonisation, dans certains cas, mais aussi comme
modèles d’homogénéisation dans d’autres cas.
La figure de l’extrême a toujours existé dans le monde religieux, que ce soit celle du
martyr ou celle du moine cloîtré, d’une part, ou celle de l’assassin fanatique ou du
kamikaze sectaire d’autre part, mais elle est de plus en plus associée étroitement à la
religion en tant que telle dans le monde contemporain. En effet, il semble que la
perception sociale du religieux change rapidement et qu’elle tend de plus en plus à
considérer que c’est le phénomène religieux lui même qui peut être extrême, au moins
dans certaines de ses manifestations fondamentalistes ou intégristes par exemple. Est-ce

là un effet de la sécularisation des sociétés modernes, de la conséquence de la montée
d’un terrorisme religieux international ou de la présence, aux États-Unis, de groupes néoévangéliques et de leurs discours messianiques et apocalyptiques ? Nous souhaitons
discuter dans ce colloque de la problématique de la binarisation du discours religieux
dans un monde globalisé à partir d’exemples historiques et contemporains.

Se figurer l’origine, ou la spécificité humaine
La pensée de l’origine se distingue d’une interrogation sur le commencement. Elle se
fonde sur cette distinction. Les figures du commencement fixent dans le temps un début
d’histoire, un point zéro que l’on voudrait reporter toujours plus loin: point cosmique,
avec la figure du Big Bang, ou point évolutionniste, avec l’image d’un Homo Sapiens issu
de la génération animale. Dans la mesure où la pensée de l’origine suppose une sortie
de l’imaginaire, elle implique l’abandon de ces figures du commencement où les temps
et espaces sont externes au sujet en train de se penser.
En même temps, à partir de cette notion d’origine entrevue comme dimension
structurale du sujet dans son avènement, il faut poser à nouveau la question du
commencement, c’est-à-dire se placer sur le plan d’une historicité linéaire pour penser
la spécificité humaine, tout en évitant une capture de la question par une réponse
imaginaire. Si quelque chose d’aussi impossible que l’esprit humain se réalise, n’est-ce
pas qu’au commencement était le Verbe (ou la Parole, le Signifiant, le Symbolique)?
Il ne s’agit pas d’en revenir à un créationnisme littéral pour expliquer la spécificité
humaine par l’intervention de Dieu – ce serait éviter ce qui en nous origine à chaque
instant. Dans un monde dominé par des fondamentalismes de tous genres, qu’il soient
religieux ou technoscientifiques, n’est-il pas essentiel de réaffirmer une troisième voie qui
refuse à la fois la réduction matérialiste déduisant l’esprit du cerveau et les raccourcis
d’un créationnisme expliquant tout par une intervention extérieure?

DESCRIPTION :
L’année 2005 marque le vingtième anniversaire de la parution du livre de Marcel
Gauchet Le désenchantement du monde : une histoire politique de la religion (Paris,
Gallimard, 1985). À cette occasion, le groupe de recherche interuniversitaire et
multidisciplinaire « Modernité et religion » cherche à rendre compte de la réception de
l’œuvre dans les domaines de la philosophie, des sciences humaines et sociales, et de la
théologie. Il s’agit de prendre la mesure de cette réception et d’en explorer les
caractéristiques dans les aires francophone et anglophone. Ce colloque fait suite à des
colloques tenus lors des deux dernières années, qui s’étaient principalement attachés à
l’examen de la généalogie et de l’économie interne de l’œuvre. Il s’agit donc de
poursuivre les travaux déjà amorcés et d’appréhender le maître ouvrage de Gauchet
en fonction cette fois-ci des lectures, différenciées et contrastées, auxquelles il a donné
lieu depuis vingt ans. Il va de soi qu’une telle entreprise ne saurait être purement neutre
et strictement descriptive, l’étude de la réception du Désenchantement du monde
constituant elle-même une modalité de réception.
