M.A. (French Studies)
Objectives
The program aims producing M.A. graduates who:
- have a good knowledge of the French political system, economy, society and culture and are well
informed about the relationships between France and other countries.
- are able to carry out good quality research in French Studies.
- have a good knowledge of the French language.
Admission
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any field and meet the requirements of Thammasat University’s
Graduate School. They also have to pass the entrance examination that includes tests in reading and writing French.
Academic System
This program is offered on the regular academic system, with courses offered during normal office hours. The
academic year is divided into two semesters.

Elective Courses
Elective courses are divided into four sections: linguistics, social sciences, arts and culture and literature.
Students have to obtain 9 credits from the section related to the scope of their thesis. Among these 9 credits, 3 must be
chosen from advanced master’s degree courses (numbered in the 700 series).

Degree Requirements
An acceptable thesis of 12 credits, together with 15 credits of required courses and 15 credits of elective courses,
is required for the master’s degree. Students must also receive P (pass) in the English Language Examination.
Students who have fulfilled the requirements of the program with a passing grade of not less than 3.00 with a
period of study not less than 4 regular semesters and not more than 8 regular semesters, will be awarded the Degree of
Master of Arts (French Studies).
Course Description
FS611 Social and Cultural Evolution of France
3 credits
A study of the evolution within French society and culture, with emphasis on major trends throughout history,
throwing light on interaction among political events; economic situations; philosophical, artistic and literary works; and
other branches of knowledge.
FS612 Contemporary French Society and Culture
3 credits
A study of current issues in French politics, economy, society and culture, together with major works in
philosophy, the fine arts, literature and other branches of knowledge.
FS613 Research Methodology
3 credits
Methodology of research work such as the formulation of a topic, conceptualization of the hypothesis, analysis,
classification and evaluation of documents and data, together with presentation of research findings. Written reports based
on the rules of thesis writing are also required.
FS621 Advanced French for Social Sciences
3 credits
A student of French language used in social sciences, with emphasis on reading and writing skills at the
advanced level. Excerpts from textbooks, newspapers, periodicals, etc., will be discussed and analyzed, leading to
academic paper writing.
FS622 Advanced French for Humanities
3 credits
A study of French language used in the studies of humanities, with emphasis on reading and writing skills at the
advanced level. Excerpts from textbooks, newspapers, periodicals, etc., will be discussed and analyzed, leading to
academic paper writing.
FS635 Major Theories in French Linguistics
3 credits
A study of notions and developments of linguistic theories considered fundamental in France, especially
structural, functional and pragmatic theories, and transformational grammar as well as various practical applications.
FS645 French Political System
3 credits
A study of the French political system with emphasis division of powers, political institutions and the
administrative structure defined by the actual constitution, together with the role of French political parties.
FS646 France and the International Community
3 credits
A study of France’s foreign policy, its role in the economy and culture in the world, as well as its role within
major international organizations.
FS647 French Political Ideologies
3 credits
A study of political ideologies that have led to major changes in the French political system from the French
Revolution to present day, with emphasis on fundamental concepts, political institutions and organizations, conflicts and
crises. Special attention is given to the ideologies relating to current political issues.
FS675 Arts in French Society
3 credits
Considering the role of arts in French society, this course puts an emphasis on interaction between artistic works
and people’s opinions, mentality and lifestyle. The government’s policies in the conservation and the promotion of artistic
works are also taken into account.
FS676 History of French Arts
3 credits
A study of the evolution of French arts (concepts, forms, techniques, etc.) throughout history, pointing out main
characteristics of various French artistic schools.
FS685 Literary Criticism in France
3 credits
A study of various approaches elaborated by western literary critics to which references are frequently made in
French literary studies. Special attention is given to critical methods largely practiced in the second half of the 20th
century.
FS735 French Morphosyntax
Methodical analysis of French morphology and syntax according to major linguistic theories.

Application of major linguistic theories to discourse analysis in French, with emphasis on lexical, structural and
semantic elements.
FS737 Contrastive Analysis (French – Thai)
3 credits
A comparative study of French and Thai languages according to linguistic methods. Similarities and differences
between the two languages will be examined at the phonological, lexical and structural levels.
FS738 Seminar in Teaching French as a Foreign Language
3 credits
A study of applied linguistics in the field of teaching French as a foreign language. Specific problems of
teaching French in Thailand will be examined and discussed in order to develop appropriate pedagogic methods.
FS745 Seminar in French – Thai Relationship
3 credits
Discussion and analysis of the French-Thai relationship from the first contact to present day. Various aspects of
the relationship will be taken into consideration, such as diplomacy, commerce, arts, and the exchange of ideas in many
branches of knowledge.
FS746 Seminar in French Economy
3 credit
Discussion of various topics in the French economy, such as systems of production, analysis of consumer
behavior and interaction among the economy, politics and society.
FS755 Seminar in French Civilization under the “Ancien Régime”
3 credits
Various topics in French civilization during the early period (before the French Revolution) will be given for
discussion and analysis, such as political system, economy, society, philosophy, and other major branches of knowledge.

Various topics in modern French civilization (from the French Revolution to present day) will be given for
discussion and analysis such as political system, economy, society, philosophy and other branches of knowledge.
FS766 Comparative Analysis on French – Thai Culture
3 credits
A comparative study of fundamental concepts and viewpoints proper to French and Thai cultures. Various
aspects of French and Thai cultures (family as institution, religious rites, traditions, etc.) will be analyzed according to
psychological and sociological methods.
FS775 Special Topics on French Arts
3 credits
Discussion and analysis of current issues concerning French arts, as well as interaction between artistic creations
and other branches of knowledge. A selected topic will be announced.

Prerequisite: FS.685
An in-depth study of French prose and novel, with particular attention to main characteristics (concepts, forms,
techniques, etc.) of a literary period or an author’s work. A selected topic will be given for discussion and analysis.

An in-depth study of French poetry, with particular attention to main characteristics (concepts, forms,
techniques, etc.) of a literary period or a poetical work. A selected topic will be given for discussion and analysis.

An in-depth study of French drama, with particular attention to main characteristics (concepts, forms,
techniques, etc.) of a dramatic school or playwright. A selected topic will be given for discussion and analysis.

Critical analysis of French literature, including major themes in literary works, characteristics of a literary
school, main types of literary characters, etc. A selected topic will be given for discussion and analysis.
FS796 Comparative Analysis of French – Thai Literature

Prerequisite: FS.685
A comparative study of French and Thai literature, with emphasis on similarities, differences and influences.
FS800 Thesis
12 credits
Student who have fulfilled 15 credits of course work (12 credits of required courses and at least 3 credits of
elective courses) with a passing grade not less than 3.00 and with a period of study not less than 2 regular semesters can
register the topic of their thesis after approval. The thesis, written in French under the supervision of an advisor, will be
submitted for an oral examination and will be evaluated S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory).
