Individual units comprise a Trident nose
undercarriage leg complete with its built-in
servo steering system; a Wasp undercarriage
unit, including shock absorber, castering post
and top and bottom vee frame; Caravelle cutout and steering valves; Comet main undercarriage leg; and Beagle 206 main leg and
power pack. This hydraulic power pack is
seen for the first time and is of particular
interest as it comprises a miniature piston type
pump driven by an electric motor, with a selfcontained fluid reservoir, accumulator, command switch and undercarriage selector valve
all immersed in the fluid.
Equipment for military and commercial
aircraft includes powered flying controls,
hydraulic pumps, selector valves, flap and
undercarriage retraction jacks, nose steering
servos and general hydraulic units. Lockheed
Avery hoses, self-sealing and quick release
couplings suitable for all aircraft fluids are
displayed, as is also the new Purolater wire
cloth filter.

Exhibits are: aviation sparking plugs, using
the high-duty " S i n t o x " ceramic insulation, as
used by airlines and air forces throughout the
world; jet engine igniters, as used in jet and
turboprop engines of civil and military aircraft; thermocouples, for the measurement of
gas temperatures; servicing equipment, including the Lodge chemical cleaner and spark-andleak tester for aircraft plugs, and the highenergy igniter tester; and precision engineering
ceramics in "Sintox"—the precision alumina
ceramic for electrical, mechanical and abrasion
resistance purposes.

As usual, these partner companies are
exhibiting jointly, under the title Lucas-Rotax.
The Lucas display centres around typical
fuel systems for aircraft applications, including
turboprops, pure jets and helicopters. Also
shown are a typical fuel boost system, hydraulic and electrically driven boost pumps,
hydraulic motors, pumps for hydraulic fluid,
gear pumps and quick-release couplings.
Among the fuel system equipment an item
of special interest is an integrated system for
helicopters which weighs only 151b and consists
of a simple flow control, a rotary throttle
valve (with idling by-pass), a rotary doubleacting shut-off cock and a fuel pump with
hydro-mechanical and overspeed governors.
A n electronic computer may be used to control
the throttle in order to maintain a constant
engine speed in spite of changes in rotor-blade
pitch.
From their comprehensive range of electrical
system equipment Rotax have selected generating and starting systems. The generating
systems include those for both constant- and
variable-frequency a.c. as well as d.c. systems,
the former incorporating either the RotaxLycoming mechanized, or the Lucas hydraulic,
constant-speed drives. Motors, actuators and
other Rotax products, ranging from recirculating ballscrews to encoders and test equipment
are represented.
Of particular interest is the range of solid
state control, current balance and protection
units. The use of semi-conductor components
has reduced them in both size and weight,

while increasing their reliability and performance range. Similarly, the representative
range of high energy ignition units, alternators
and inverters have decreased in size with
increased output and efficiency.

Aermacchi have a stand inside that of the
Associazione Industrie Aerospaziali (AIA), on
which components are exhibited, principally
for the Lockheed F-104G. Additionally there
are test stands manufactured under licence
from Sprague, Gardena (California).
T h e principal exhibits, however, are actual
aircraft—the MB.326 jet trainer and the
MB.326B (an armed version); the Aermacchi
Lockheed AL.60 in standard upholstered configuration with Continental TSIO-470B 260
h.p. engine; AL.60 in standard upholstered
configuration
with Continental
GIO-470
310 h.p. engine; AL.60 military version; and
AL.60 air survey version.
The MB.326 is a tandem two-seater which
has a critical Mach number of 0.76, although
at Mach 0.82 it is claimed to remain perfectly
within control with only a small change in
control reactions. The Aermacchi Lockheed 60
is a very versatile and sturdy multi-mission
aircraft of the class generally known as "bush
transports."
