26 km HORSE TREK
Suisse Normande: a little piece of Normandy
shaped by time and geology.
The ever-changing panorama offers a variety of breathtaking
landscapes: Deep valleys, steep gorges and white-water gave
this area the name of “Swiss Normandy”.
Located thirty miles from Caen, the Suisse Normande area was
shaped by the meandering river Orne, which carved its bed
through the rocks of the Armorican massif, the oldest rocks on
Earth (800 million years).

B Pain de Sucre and the rocks of la Houle
St Omer
Millions of years ago, the Massif of la Houle formed, with the
neighbouring hills, a prodigious group of mountains. The upper part
of the massif was barely eroded by the sea which was present at
the time. Today only a fragment of the Hercynian chain remains, the
«Bocain syncline». The massif, known as «The Rocks of la Houle»,
reaches 240m at its highest point. The ridge road, at the top, reveals
stunning views of the Suisse Normande. The area is a popular tourist
destination, visited by backpackers and thrill seekers such as paragliding enthusiasts.

The rocks of les Parcs
C Le Vey
The Rocks of les Parcs are part of the Bocain syncline which stretches in Lower Normandy from West to East, from Granville to
Falaise. The escarpment is composed of
very hard rock, the Cambrian conglomerate, which formed some 540 million years
ago. This explains the presence of this
rocky outcrop today and the meanders carved by the river Orne. The relief, panorama
and breathtaking scenery in this area make
it a popular tourist destination, also enjoyed
by sports enthusiasts. The ‘Rocks of les
Parks’ site is of regional importance for
rock climbing with more than 150 natural,
secure routes.
D Château Ganne
La Pommeraye
The ancient site of Chateau Ganne,
built in the tenth and eleventh centuries, comprises three raised earthwork
fortifications. A yearly medieval festival
is held during the weekend of the 14th
July at this important historical site.
Many castles in Normandy and beyond
are named Ganne, after the father of
Ganelon whose treachery, according to
legend, caused the death of Roland at
Roncesvalles.
