Sunspot Magnetic Fields
Diss ETH No. 11886 Infrared Measurements of Sunspot Magnetic A dissertation submitted Fields to the SWISS FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ZURICH for the degree of Doctor of Natural Sciences presented by Isabelle Ruedi Dipl. Phys. ETH born March 2, 1967 citizen of Accepted Renens, VD on the recommendation of Prof. Dr. J.O. Stenflo, PD Dr. S.K. Solanki Dr. W. Schmidt, examiner and 1996 co-examiners Abstract investigate the The aim of this thesis is to structure of solar features, mainly of sunspots. For that purpose I make magnetic sensitivity of a number of infrared lines. First a survey of the infrared near spectral use magnetic of the extreme range between 1.05 and Q spectra of a sunspot plage. Lines showing exceptionally large Stokes V or Q amplitudes are listed and their asymmetries are analyzed. The potential of a number of spectral lines for the investigation of solar Stokes /, V and 2.50 (im. is presented. It is based umbra and of an active region on magnetic structures is discussed analysed more specifically. and the most attractive of these lines are Then, in a first step of the detailed analysis, observations of the lines formed specially deep in the solar photosphere (Fe i 15648.5 A (g 3) and Fei 15652.9 A (<7eff 1.53)) are used to uncover the magnetic properties of = = a number of solar magnetic structures. The first clear detection of is presented. strength Its detection field very accurately siphon flow across a polarity inversion line possible due to the ability of measuring the a was with these lines. The strength and inclination of the magnetic field of a simple, relatively symmetric sunspot are determined. The great magnetic sensitivity of the spectral line used allows us to follow the magnetic field of the sunspot well beyond the outer edge of the penumbra. A low-lying, almost horizontal superpenumbral magnetic canopy reproduces these observations best. The magnetic field strength in the canopy can be measured and its height de¬ termined. Evidence of small kilogauss magnetic elements underlying the superpenumbral presented. canopy is investigation of a sunspot umbra with a light bridge shows that the magnetic field strength in the umbra reaches values over 3500 G while 1400 G relative the field strength in the light bridge is reduced by 1000 The - to the nearby umbra. It allows me to compare the magnetic field in the upper chromosphere with the field in the underlying photosphere. In general, the magnetic field in the chromosphere is found to be significantly more homogeneous. I find that dB/dz in the umbra of a large sunspot decreases outwards in the spot, as well as with height. Observations of complex Stokes V profiles at the neutral line in a sunspot penumbra (crossover effect) suggest that the upper chromospheric penumbral magnetic field is not fluted to the same extent as the photospheric field. The large line broadening of He I (up to 10 km s-1) is found to be due to motions which are largely field aligned. First observations of the full Stokes vector in the upper chromosphere It is shown that the difference between the appearance of are presented. chromospheric and photospheric magnetic structures observed close to the solar limb is largely due to the difference in height to which they refer and projection effects. The observations do suggest, however, that the magnetic field above sunspot penumbrae is somewhat more vertical in the chromosphere than in the photosphere. of the upper active In a multiplet at 2.2 jum to is shown to be them is of the temperature sensitive lines of the Ti i investigate the cool parts of active regions. One field strength of and is associated The other component is strongest near the outer boundary of the spot, is much more inclined, has a very low magnetic field strength and shows the signature of the Evershed effect. Finally I present a careful analysis of 13 high-quality optical spectra of low to moderately active late-type dwarfs (G1-K5) aimed at determining their magnetic parameters. Among our sample only one star, e Eri (spatially averaged field strength « 165 ± 30 G), exhibits the unambiguous signature of a magnetic field. The same star also provides us with the first direct evidence that the detected field is in the form of plages.
