DTH’s Artistic Director, Virginia Johnson, is a force of nature, and her will and determination to re-launch this illustrious troupe has met with great praise through-out the dance world. Virginia was a celebrated dancer for 28 years under the direction of DTH founder Arthur Mitchell, and it was Mitchell himself who asked Virginia to take over the helm for its reincarnation. Her steadfast dedication and artistic insight have brought the company jubilantly back to the forefront, with a dynamic and diverse group of stellar dancers and eclectic repertoire. We’re in for a treat tonight with this wonderful program featuring the works of four choreographers – including Ulysses Dove, Donald Byrd, Helen Pickett and Dance Theatre of Harlem resident choreographer Robert Garland. I look forward to seeing you all next season and encourage you to continue exploring the exceptional artists we bring to Ottawa each year. Virginia Johnson, la directrice artistique du DTH, est une véritable force de la nature dont la volonté et la détermination à faire revivre l’illustre troupe a forcé l’admiration du monde de la danse. Pendant 28 ans, elle a fait une brillante carrière de danseuse sous la direction d’Arthur Mitchell, le fondateur de DTH, et c’est Mitchell lui-même qui lui a demandé de prendre la barre de la troupe réincarnée. Having lost 13 close friends and relatives, among them his father, Dove himself explained, “I want to tell an experience in movement, a story without words, and create a poetic monument over people I loved.” Set to Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, Dove’s spare but demanding choreography invites dancer and viewer alike to live in each moment as if it were the last. But, when we are in love we surrender to unbridled time. What we share together during this span seems “out of time.” And then, too suddenly, time shifts into focus again. An imprint of what we shared lingers, and traces of remembrances float into view. Yes, we crawl, walk, run, and love in time. After retiring in 1997, Ms. Johnson served as the founding editor-in chief of Pointe Magazine for 10 years. A native of Washington, D.C., Ms. Johnson began her training with Therrell Smith and studied with Mary Day at the Washington School of Ballet. She graduated from the Academy of the Washington School of Ballet and went on to be a University Scholar in the School of the Arts at New York University before joining Dance Theatre of Harlem. Virginia Johnson is universally recognized as one of the great ballerinas of her generation and is perhaps best known for her performances in the ballets Giselle, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Fall River Legend. She has received such honors as a Young Achiever Award from the National Council of Women, Outstanding Young Woman of America and the Dance Magazine Award, a Pen and Brush Achievement Award, the Washington Performing Arts Society’s 2008-2009 Pola Nirenska Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2009 Martha Hill Fund Mid-Career Award.
