Introduction
T h e i m p o r t a n c e o f epigraphic sources for the history o f G r e e k religion has
b e e n c o m p e t e n t l y sketched b y Jules L A B A R B E , in Mentor 1, p. 4 8 - 5 0 . U n f o r ­
tunately, t h e accessibility o f G r e e k inscriptions is aggravated b y a multiplicity
o f — p a r t l y o v e r l a p p i n g — c o r p o r a , collections, and editions o f inscriptions. T h e
p r i m a r y a i m o f this s u p p l e m e n t is t o g u i d e non-epigraphists through the v a r i o u s
resources f o r G r e e k epigraphy, with a special focus o n publications which are o f
particular r e l e v a n c e f o r the study o f G r e e k religion.
T h e f o l l o w i n g bibliography ( 1 9 8 6 - 1 9 9 7 ) takes into account the essential differ­
ences w h i c h exist b e t w e e n various types o f epigraphic publications (corpora, a n t h o ­
logies, editions, etc.). C o r p o r a aim at assembling all the epigraphical material f o r a
given region or o n a given subject. T h e y can b e d i v i d e d into general corpora, w h i c h
i n t e n d t o a s s e m b l e all t h e inscriptions o f large geographical units (section I I A 1),
local corpora dedicated t o a single city or region (section I I A 2), thematic corpora,
w h i c h bring together all the inscriptions pertaining t o a certain subject (such as
sacred laws, confession inscriptions, inventories, etc., section I I A 3), and museum
corpora w h i c h present the inscriptions o f a single collection (section I I A 4). U n l i k e
the c o r p o r a , w h i c h aspire t o collect all the material available o n their respective
area, editions of inscriptions a i m at m a k i n g unpublished texts available; those n e w
editions w h i c h contain a substantial n u m b e r o f inscriptions pertaining t o religion
h a v e b e e n i n c l u d e d in t h e f o l l o w i n g bibliographical supplement (section I I B ) .
Finally, anthologies o f inscriptions present a selection o f texts, usually a c c o m p a n i e d
b y a translation (section I I C ) . F u r t h e r m o r e , this bibliography includes a represent­
ative n u m b e r o f religious studies which rely primarily or basically o n the epigraphic
e v i d e n c e (section I I I ) . T h e epigraphical harvest o f a year is presented in a series
o f annual bibliographical reviews (section I V ) . For a m o r e detailed review o f the
epigraphic sources o n G r e e k religion the reader should consult the Epigraphic
Bulletin for Greek Religion published annually in Kernos ( 1 9 9 1 - ) .
