EQUALITY In our country with its highest respect of human rights and where the credo is LIBERTY - EQUALITY - BROTHERHOOD, we are still far from a clear willingness to consider others as equals, as acceptable partners, especially if one notices the difference in the color of the skin, the sound of the name, the religious beliefs and even the gender and the age. In a country which has served for two centuries as a model of democracy to the world, how can we still accept that the CV of Mohammed..., with a French nationality and graduated from a respectable school, be rejected while at the same time, this same CV with the name Peter or Paul receives the complete attention of the recruiter. How can we accept that Françoise, in every way at least equal, and in some ways more brilliant, than her friend Henri, be compensated for her work by a salary of 10 to 30 % less? Poor JeanPierre…he is 45 years old and already is interesting to only a few companies. What a waste! The devil with these shackles of prejudice! We must be finished with this fear of differences and change, which over the long run negatively impacts on all of those who have chosen France and its humanistic model as a haven for a better life. Let us not forget that the human richness of France, the crossroad of Europe, has arisen historically from the enriching mosaic of the differences of its population. Let us avoid that the image of our country be tarnished internationally. Life is so good in France; let us all try to focus our combined resources without exclusion in order to improve the future of everyone. J.A. In search of the highest academic and professional levels, ESCE has begun the process of accreditation by the AACSB ESCE has embarked on a multi-year project to gain the prestigious international accreditation of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). This new endeavor to gain the highest global recognition among the most demanding business academic programs clearly demonstrates ESCE’s desire to raise itself to the level of the best business schools across the world. Besides the fulfillment of rigorous academic requirements, including internationally recognized faculty and coherent curriculum development that allows for international standards and the specific needs of ESCE’s mission, this AACSB accreditation evaluates the quality of all the processes of the management of the school in order that the students and their future employers may benefit from the implementation of the most demanding international standards. The management and governance of the school, the circulation of information, the procedures of quality control at each step of the process of knowledge transmission, the contextual environment of the studies, the development of the knowledge base available to the students, the internationalization of the school, the study of the means employed in relation to the program mission, and the job placement of the graduates are among the many themes examined which form the heart of the process of the accreditation according to proven international criteria. The achievement of this accreditation, which is well underway with a significant number of criteria already established or recently implemented, will permit ESCE to acquire the international visibility and credibility necessary for its development. Furthermore, the accreditation will be a proof of the willingness of ESCE to provide its students with the most rigorous international standards in business management studies. Professor Don Osborn, Head of the Department of Management and Strategy, is leading this project which includes the input of the entire administrative and academic staff, the present and former students, and business partners. Enquête réalisée en janvier 2005 Survey completed in January 2005 6% 13 % 57 % En 3ème cycle In post-graduate programs En poste Employed En recherche d'emploi Searching for employment 24 % Autres (projets humanitaires, artistiques...) Other (social or artistic projects, etc.) The majority of 2004 ESCE graduates follow advanced degree programs A majority (57%) of the 2004 ESCE graduates have enrolled in post-graduate programs according to the annual survey by the Department of Corporate Relations and Placement conducted in January 2005. This tendency toward a fifth year of graduate studies has been steadily increasing during the last several years and represents a reaction to the demands of businesses for more highly educated new employees. For their part, business schools are expanding into the norm of five-year programs in order to meet this rapidly rising demand. MASTERS PROGRAM, ESCE/UNIVERSITY Interview with Valerie BOUCHER, presently student in the Masters of International Management program, ESCE/IAE of Poitiers (ESCE class of 2003). ESCE: After your graduation in 2003, why did you chose to study in the masters program? VB: After receiving my ESCE diploma, I wanted to reinforce my four years of study there with a Masters of International Management. During the first months of my management studies, I realized that international Human Resources, and more specifically, the function of a HR department in a multinational corporation, was the direction of study that I wanted to take. ESCE: Would you describe your reactions to the courses? VB: The quality of the teaching and of the faculty are the strong points of this curriculum. The program is taught in part by the professors of IAE de Poitiers, who share with students an excellent theoretical and practical know-how, and in part by business professionals at ESCE who share their experience. ESCE: What has the masters program added to your initial ESCE education? VB: This program has allowed me to refine my professional orientation, to specialize and to acquire the keys to open more doors to the type of career I want. It has also prepared us to recognize the diversity of international businesses. ESCE: What are some of the advantages and handicaps in working with students from different academic backgrounds and perspectives than ESCE? VB: The homogeneity of the goals and values of the group and the differences that did exist were really a plus since we work a lot in teams where we all were able to contribute in different manners creating a stronger team effort. ESCE: Finally, has this masters program corresponded to your needs? VB: This program is exactly what I wanted. It is for me a real added value to my initial ESCE curriculum because it has permitted me to specialize in the career I want. I am beginning to put together my own small personal network, and I hope that in a few years I will be recruiting ESCE graduates for international corporations!
