Orange County Throws Legendary Hollywood Bash!
More than 800 Orange County philanthropists
revisited classic Hollywood at the newly named OC
Barons’ Ball, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars
to fight cancer. The 8th OC Barons’ Ball, “Legends of
Hollywood: OC goes Hollywood to Cure Cancer” was
Co-Chaired by Debbie & Gary Douglas who
dedicated themselves whole-heartedly throughout the
entire year to make the gala a success.
Organization for the Ball began in early 2006 with our
Logistics team, headed by Ken Agid, taking care of
those ‘behind-the-scenes’
details that make the
Ball appear seamless.
Randy Moore made
sure legal issues were
taken care of and
Katie Mueller ensured
that the event was packed
with the who’s-who of
Orange County as the
chair of ticket sales.
Kristin Scheithauer,
Debbie Douglas of
Douglas Advisors and their communications
committee, garnered more ink and airtime for the Ball
than ever before, successfully handling the name
change and building a crescendo of excitement
leading up to and following the Ball. As Printing Chair,
Sharon Esterley worked with MyPrint Corporation
and Blue C Communications to create the stunning
invitations, evening programs, and other printed
materials.
The evening of the Ball found Newport Dunes
Waterfront Resort transformed into tinsel town,
complete with a red-carpet arrival, paparazzi, and
on-camera interviews with a Joan Rivers look-alike,
Gloria Zigner from Orange Coast Magazine and Pat
Buttress from the former Adelphia Communications.
The stars of OC philanthropy including Honorary
Co- Chairs Julia & George Argyros, Paul & Daranne
Folino, Kent & Trina Barkouras, David & Kristine
Heil, Pascal & Christine Olhats, and many others,
were decked out in their finest.
Betty & David Comegys spent most of their evening
behind the cameras. Preserving precious memories,
this dedicated couple captured the evening on film
and video, along with

O’Donnell, who also
photographed the
event.

Committee who
ensured guests received
services fit for
Hollywood royalty from
the moment they
stepped foot on the red carpet.
VIP guests were in for a treat at the VIP reception,
organized by leading ladies Barbara Steinberg and
Bobbitt Williams and sponsored by First Team
Estates and Dani Gold. The party was a hit with
flashing VIP lapel pins, delicious appetizers, and
wonderful spirits.
Jenny Gerard helped the gentlemen of the
Gentlemen’s Club shine, glitzing them up with
recognition for joining.

were named after famous Hollywood
directors, celebrities, and agents,
including Kevin Bacon, Dolly Pigpen,
and Hamalina Jolie.

Valerie Dennis’ excellent work on signs
helped everyone to find the fun and the
Casino/Banking Committee, led by Ron
Rubino made sure our guests had
ample opportunity to buy, spend and
win Baron Bucks to later use at the
Rodeo Drive Boutiques.
Inside the Ball, Gerald Ishibashi and the
Stonebridge Band rocked the house with
live dance music, and big screens aired live
personal interviews of the guests as they
arrived.
Decorations from the Décor Committee, led
by Co-Chairs Margo Ferris and Phil Brandt
transformed the Newport Dunes Waterfront
Resort into a true tinsel town. Upon entering
the tents, guests were transported to the
glamour of old Hollywood with finishing
touches like velvety red carpet and even
statues of Oscar himself. The centerpieces,
designed by Margo Ferris, Phil Brandt and
Julie Aros and constructed by our fabulous
volunteers, were a highlight with many taken
home by appreciative guests at evenings end.
The Entertainment Committee led by CoChairs Donna Bianchi and Julie Aros, made
sure guests were never short on activities.
Guests could rub elbows with Lucy Ricardo,
Marilyn Monroe, Jack Nicholson, Whoopi
Goldberg and Elvis Presley impersonators,
watch classic movie clips projected on the big
screen, try their luck at the Hollywood and
Wine Toss sponsored by Stuart Cellars
Vineyard and Winery, play in the High
Rollers Poker Tournament, and enjoy Dancin’
with the Stars of the Hollywood Starlets
Dance Review.
“Hollywood Pork” was the home of the
traditional and ever popular Pig Races, run by
Guests saluted cancer survivors,
crusaders or lost loved ones by
purchasing a memento to be hung on
the Tribute Wall, organized by Tribute
Wall Chair Bette South with help from
Ray Brandt.
Catering Committee Co-Chairs Kathryn
Smith and Kay Burra designed a
mouth-watering menu served up at
some of Hollywood’s famous haunts
including spectacular seafood at
Coconut Grove, Chasen’s Chili at Old
Favorites, Mandarin chicken chow mein
at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and ice
cream sundaes from Schwab’s Drug
Store Dessert Fountain.
The Live Auction, headed by Wendy
Kan, and the Silent Auction, headed by
Pat Bennett, were both smashing
successes. As in previous years, both
auctions offered bidders once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and unique items.
The Live Auction was once again a high
point of the Ball. The top item was a
weekend getaway with nationally known
Chef Pascal Olhats on a “Sideways”
venture created by Pascal in Paso
Robles. The item sold for $14,000 to
Brad & Lisa Mitchell.
At 11 pm, with Baron Bucks in hand,
guests perused the top notch merchandise on Rodeo Drive from Between the
Sheets, Beach ’N Backyards,

Boot Barn, CAbi, Calispia, CoCalo, Cookie Lee,
Cracker Ltd., Fry’s Electronics, Logic Brand, RENE
FURTERER, and Shape-up Fitness Center & Day
Spa. The fabulous boutique style shopping was
organized and run by our tireless General Store
Committee Chair, Jennifer Thomas.
At midnight, guests, exhausted from an entire evening
of fun, headed for home, but not until they collected
their Goodie Bags. The ever-popular gift bag, chaired
by Jeanie Gibson, was once again sponsored by
CWS- Bobbitt & Bill Williams and Steve Sherwood,
and was filled with goodies including T-shirts
commemorating the 8th annual event.
“Legends of Hollywood: OC Goes Hollywood to Cure
Cancer” was successful thanks to everyone who helped
in ways large and small. Funds raised at the Ball
support the American Cancer Society’s local patient
services, lifesaving cancer research, advocacy
efforts, and community education programs that
teach cancer prevention and early detection. Thank
you to everyone who made this evening a success.

American Cancer Society joins CHOC for Dancin’ Cowpokes Party
or the first time, the Society’s OC Barons
will team up with Children’s Hospital
Orange County to host the annual
“Dancin’ Cowpokes party” on June 24th at
Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort. The party
honors and recognizes the courage of pediatric
oncology patients and their families, and provides a day of fun and family joy.

Last year, the OC Barons hosted the party for
hundreds of children from throughout
Southern California at Hidden Valley in Irvine to
forget about doctors, needles, and cancer
and just enjoy being a family.
Thank you to last year’s Co-Chairs Anne
Moore and Christi Hamilton for their
time, energy and leadership.
The day included games, bounce houses,
carnival rides, face painting, Tae Kwon Do
demonstrations, a petting zoo, sports,
clowns, pony rides, the Wells Fargo stage
coach, and so much more.
This year’s Co-Chairs are Connie Cruz
and Margo Ferris. The OC Barons are
proud to partner with CHOC, another
organization that does such wonderful
things for children who are battling cancer.

“World Cruise: Passport to Life”
Ships Out on October 20, 2007
Get your passports ready! The 9th annual OC Barons’ Ball at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort this October 20 from
7 p.m. to 11 p.m. promises to deliver the trip of a lifetime. Join the OC Barons as they present “World Cruise:
Passport to Life,” to raise funds to benefit American Cancer Society research, educational programs, advocacy efforts
and cancer patient services such as the annual Children’s Party.
Co-Chairs Carol and Kent Wilken, of Newport Beach, and their crew will take guests on a cruise-experience to exotic
destinations around the world during an event of fun and festivities including fine
cuisine, a live band, dancing, games, casino entertainment, shuffleboard, live pig races in
the Porks O’ Call, and shopping with your Cruise Cash!
Reserved table seating is $350 per person. Exciting sponsorship opportunities available
including title, premier, gold and silver, table and game sponsors, and sponsorship of the
