Christina Cameron
Following discussions with the Canadian government, we have agreed to name the award after Christina Cameron,
a world-renowned expert in the field of World Heritage.
In 2005, Christina Cameron took up her present position as a Full Professor in the School of Architecture and the
Canada Research Chair on Built Heritage at the University of Montreal. She is currently the Chairperson of
UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.
As head of Canada's delegation to World Heritage since 1990, she has been actively involved as Chairperson,
Rapporteur and Bureau member, as well as chairing international expert meetings on strategic planning (19901992), historic canals (1994), a global strategy for a representative World Heritage List (1994), cultural landscapes
(1998), working methods (1999-2000) and a proposal to establish a World Heritage Indigenous Peoples Council of
Experts (2000-2001).
Prior to her appointment at Montreal University, Christina Cameron's career as a heritage executive with Parks
Canada spanned more than thirty-five years. As Director General of National Historic Sites, she provided national
direction for Canada's historic places, focusing on heritage conservation and education programs. She also served
as the Secretary to the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada from 1986 to 2005. In 2006 she received
the Public Service of Canada's Award of Excellence for Outstanding Career and in 2008 the Outstanding
Achievement Award, the highest recognition of the Public Service of Canada.
Her academic studies in Canada and the United States cover literature, art history and museum studies, including
an M.A. from Brown University in Providence, R.I. (1970) and a Ph.D. in architectural history from Laval University
(1983).
She has written extensively since the 1970's on Canadian architecture, heritage management and World Heritage
issues. She has served as a member of the Getty Conservation Institute's conservation grants committee and a
Getty-sponsored international project on values-based management of heritage sites.

Les premiers gagnants
du Prix HI Christina Cameron
Candidates had to present a project related to World Heritage that they would like
to implement in their countries after attending the Youth Forum. The HI-Christina
Cameron Youth Award was developed using this selection process.
The 30 participants in the Youth Forum were invited by HI to submit their World
Heritage Project using the attached form and criteria (UNESCO Proposition and
project plan). We received 21 completed forms. The group then read the 21
proposals and selected seven finalists. The seven finalists presented their project
in the theatre of the HI-Quebec City hostel to their 30 youth forum colleges to
determine the three winners. A representative of HI-Canada was present.
The first three recipients of the Award:
1st Place Ansoumane Sane (Senegal-Francophone-male, $3,000)
2nd Place Taryn Barry (Canadian-Anglophone-female, $1,000)
3rd Place Hari Wibowo (Indonesia-Anglophone-male, $1,000)
Un héritage pour les générations futures
Great visibility for HI
The launch of this new award was a great opportunity to enhance the HI profile in
the UNESCO community.
In his opening speech of the 32nd session of the World Heritage Committee, the
Director-General of UNESCO, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, announced the award as
follows: "Canadian organizers have also worked with Hostelling International to
establish another legacy for the youth component- the creation of an annual
$5,000 bursary program that will start this year".
It was really moving to see how happy Mrs. Cameron and her colleagues were
during the launch of the award. The chair of the African group was proud and
noted in her concluding notes that a young leader from Senegal won the top prize
of the new HI-Christina Cameron Award.
Next year, the 33rd Session of the World Heritage Committee will be held in
Seville, Spain.
