Informe de prensa 01-15 Junio
Revue de presse 01-15 Juin
Dear reader,
Welcome to the new issue of Infosylva. Read about different
experiences, in Algeria, China and Iraq to combat
desertification, to generate energy and to provide food to
local populations. You will find an article about a nine-story
building in England, made almost completely of wood panels.
From the forests of Kenya, researchers have been looking for
plant species that could hold the key to human food security.
And in Cambodia, a simple, low cost water filter is helping the
rural poor of the country to improve their health prospects
and combat deforestation.
Enjoy your reading!
Estimado(a) lector(a),

CPF releases sustainable forest management fact sheets
As the world celebrates World Environment Day and prepares to gather for the Rio+20 Conference, the
Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), a voluntary arrangement consisting of 14 international
organizations, institutions and secretariats, releases eight fact sheets underlining the important role of
forests and sustainable forest management (SFM) for human well-being, sustainable development and a
green economy.
Forestry and the forest industry in a green economy
An effort is under way worldwide to better manage our planet's forest resources and better enhance
their role in mitigating climate change. Forest loss and degradation in developing countries account for
nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Monitoring and reducing these emissions has been the
key goal for the international community in climate change negotiations and is important for the
upcoming Rio+20 conference on sustainable development. Viet Nam is one example of a country that's
taking important steps to manage and expand its forest resources. Previous loss of forested areas has
been reversed and the country is now increasing forest area by about 1% every year.

Supporting small forest enterprises - a toolkit for facilitators
Small and medium forest enterprises are critical to the poor. They generate local wealth, help to secure
local resources and environmental accountability, promote local creativity and help to preserve
indigenous cultures and market niches. The Forest Connect Alliance, led by the International Institute for
Environment and Development and FAO, work to better link small and medium forest enterprises to each
other, to markets, to service providers and to policy processes. The toolkit provides hands-on guidance,
followed by practical tips, on a range of activities for supporting forest enterprises at all levels.

Algeria, solar panels to stop desertification
ANSA, 06/06/12
The desert always seems to have the upper hand, despite nowadays thanks to sophisticated technology,
albeit very expensive, its relentless advance can be slowed down. Algeria has always lived with this
problem, especially in the southern regions of the country, where the battle to stop the desert from
moving ahead is a daily occurrence.

Brazilians debate how green they are
Bloomberg, 07/06/12
Brazilian alternative rock band Legiao Urbana had its heyday in the 1990s, but that hasn't stopped its
trademark song "What Country is This?" from living on. With a verse that warns "Brazil will get rich/We

the pages of the leading business daily, Valor, this week.

Rio+20 Earth summit: Amazon deforestation
The Guardian, 14/06/12
Although deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is down 80% since 2004, environmentalists fear recent
changes to the forest code will lead to further destruction. About 20% of the rainforest has already been
destroyed. Before this month's Rio+20 Earth summit, the Brazilian Amazon, home to 60% of the world's
largest forest and 20% of the Earth's oxygen, remains threatened by the rapid development of the
country.
Saving the rainforest — and making money off of it
Washington Post, 12/06/12
One of the greatest weapons against climate change sits on vast tracts of undeveloped Brazilian land.
The country is home to nearly half of Earth’s rainforests, gobbling up 2 billion tons of carbon dioxide
every year — a third of the United States’ 2010 greenhouse gas output. Maintaining, and expanding,
what the Economist aptly termed “the world’s lungs” will be essential to fighting global warming, not to
mention preserving biological diversity and water systems.
The battle for the Amazon heats up again
Time, 05/06/12
The Amazon rainforest is the most important patch of land on the planet. The trees have been called the
lungs of the Earth and that's far more than just a metaphor: they absorb more than 2 billion metric tons
of carbon dioxide per year, return oxygen in exchange and help regulate the climate of the Western
Hemisphere in the process. The forest itself is the hottest of biodiversity hotspots, home to countless
species of plants and animals that we have yet to discover — and even tribes of indigenous human
beings who have never been contacted by the outside world.

The Times of India, 13/06/12

be out of bounds for all mining activities, and not just coal excavation.
Forest royalty: source of disharmony
Dawn, 14/06/12

Taming the heart of the Peruvian Amazon
BBC, 05/06/12
It was rainy season in the Peruvian Amazon and we were told there was little dry land in the region. This
was easy to believe, with the swollen river tossing whole trees like twigs down its miles-wide torrent. But
as our skiff rounded a tributary, a large swath of lawn emerged, dotted with tufts of springy grass. The
too-bright stretch of lime called to me from the boat, begging me to bound down its lush length.

greening in a big way, various studies have shown. The newest such work, focused on scrubby windswept
regions along Russia’s northwest Arctic coast, has found a particularly noteworthy shift is under way.

Since 2001, over 7,000 feathered and furry vagrants have passed through a cramped apartment on
