Domain-based licenses support products licensed through the ScholarPASS™ sales programs, and link software to network domains rather than specific license servers (machine as indicated by host ID). This document contains these topics. About Domain-Based Licenses page 1 Obtaining Domain-Based Licenses page 3 How To Determine the DNS Domain Name page 4 How to Determine the NIS/NIS+ Domain Name page 5 How to Contact the License Distribution Center page 5 How To Install Domain-Based Licenses page 6 Problems Getting Your Passwords page 7 Domain-Based Password Request Form page 8 About Domain-Based Licenses A standard license ties a product to a particular machine as defined by its host ID, but domain-based licenses tie products to a network domain. To provide a simple method for controlling access to the software, individual licenses can be ordered for domains or subdomains. Domain-based licenses function without using a centralized license manager and without enforcing hard limits on the number of users. However, your software license may limit the number of users; these limits are defined in the licensing agreement. 1 The licensed software operates as long as the requesting user of the licensed software is on a valid network domain, for example: Example—Valid User Requests Domain Password Issued Requesting User’s Domain my_org.org my_org.org my_org.org eng.my_org.org my_org.org admin.my_org.org eng.my_org.org eng.my_org.org eng.my_org.org bld12.eng.my_org.org Example—Invalid User Requests Domain Password Issued Requesting User’s Domain my_org.org a_different.org.org eng.my_org.org my_org.org eng.my_org.org admin.my_org.org my_org.org eng.sun.com The license agreement signed by your organization includes information about the network domains where licensed software is installed. Licenses are issued only for the domains associated with your site as described in your agreement. Depending on how your network domains are set up, you can acquire a license for a single product (or product feature) that makes it available on all of the network domains at your site. You also have the choice of receiving individual licenses for each domain and subdomain. This allows you reasonable control of user access to the software. For example, the license agreement may simply identify my_org.org as the domain on which licensed software may operate. However, you can acquire a license for a particular subdomain (for example, a subdomain of eng.my_org.org) and limit access to the subdomain as well as its subdomains. 2 Solstice AdminSuite Domain-Based License Installation Notes—January 1997 Obtaining Domain-Based Licenses Domain-based licenses are available one to two weeks after your ScholarPASS license agreement has been signed and approved. Check the date of the agreement before requesting your license. You can order your license from the License Distribution Center. Refer “How to Contact the License Distribution Center” on page 5 for more information about how to contact the license distribution center. You can contact the License Distribution Center by email, fax, or telephone. Order by email or fax, rather than by telephone, if possible. Although you can request your activation key via email, fax, or phone, you will receive your activation key only via email or FAX. Please fill in the activation key request form (refer to “Domain-Based Password Request Form” on page 8) completely before contacting the License Center. This is the information that the License Distribution Center will need from you: • Site number This number identifies your organization for all ScholarPASS licensed software. Upon approval of your agreement, a site number is assigned to each site in your organization. If you don’t have this number, ask for it from the individual who signed the licensing agreement for your organization. • Serial number from your Proof of License Certificate The serial number is printed on the label attached to the Proof of License Certificate. The Proof of License Certificate is part of your ScholarPASS product package. • General information, including: • Your name and title • Name and address of your organization—including ZIP code • Your telephone and fax numbers • Your email address • Network domain name(s) for the license(s) The domain names that you supply are verified against the information that was provided in the license agreement. A license will be issued only if your requested domain(s) is associated with your site number. It’s a good idea to use the widest network domains possible in your organization, taking into account that you do not violate the terms of your licensing agreement by Obtaining Domain-Based Licenses 3 providing access to ineligible users. To determine the network domain name, see “How To Determine the DNS Domain Name” on page 4 or “How to Determine the NIS/NIS+ Domain Name” on page 5. • Name and version number of the products for which you are requesting licenses ▼ How To Determine the DNS Domain Name If the file /etc/resolv.conf is used to specify the domain for the current machine, that value is the DNS domain name. For example, the domain name is superhero.com in this /etc/resolv.conf file: ——————/etc/resolv.conf—————— domain superhero.com nameserver 111.22.33.444 ———end of /etc/resolv.conf——— If there is no domain name specified in /etc/resolv.conf, the /usr/ucb/hostname command can be used to determine the DNS domain name. If the hostname command returns a value which contains a period (.), the value returned will be used as the DNS domain name. For example, the value mighty_mouse.superhero.com is returned by this /usr/ucb/hostname command: % /usr/ucb/hostname mighty_mouse.superhero.com If the domain name listed in the /etc/resolv.conf file differs from the one returned by the /usr/ucb/hostname command, the value in the /etc/resolv.conf file takes precedence and should be registered as your required domain. 4 Solstice AdminSuite Domain-Based License Installation Notes—January 1997 ▼ How to Determine the NIS/NIS+ Domain Name The value of the NIS or NIS+ domain is the output of the domainname command. For example, the value superhero.com is returned by this domainname command: % domainname superhero.com ▼ How to Contact the License Distribution Center There are three ways to obtain licenses for these products: • • • Email Fax Phone Licensing by email is the easiest method to obtain licenses. • All products can be licensed from an auto-response mail file, which means you don’t have to license products individually. • All licensing data is stored in the auto-response mail file so you don’t have to worry about mistyping the 15-character password. • You can ignore the product licensing items on the graphical License Installation Tool window because all product license information is read from the saved mail file. Note – It may take up to 24 hours after submitting your license request before you receive your license information via email of FAX. You can contact a License Center locally or from outside a particular country via email, phone, or FAX. At the main voice menu, simply follow the directions for software licensing. Refer to your license certificate for specific information about contacting the license distribution center. Obtaining Domain-Based Licenses 5 ▼ How To Install Domain-Based Licenses You will receive password licenses from the License Distribution Center. The current implementation of domain-based passwords does not use a separate license server, so it is not necessary to run a license server to operate these ScholarPASS configured products. Installation should take you 15 minutes. 1. Verify that you have the following directory. % ls /basedir/SUNWadm/license_dir In this command, basedir Specifies the directory where the software is installed. If you have the appropriate directory, skip to Step 3. If you do not, then continue with Step 2. 2. Become root, then create this directory. # mkdir /basedir/SUNWadm/license_dir In this command, basedir 6 Specifies the directory where the software is installed. Solstice AdminSuite Domain-Based License Installation Notes—January 1997 3. Take the password information provided by the License Distribution Center and save it in a text file: License File Name ScholarPASS sunpro.lic,sp Make sure your file name contains both a period (.) and a comma (,). You can append the contents of this new file to an existing domain-based password file or create additional files with an incremented name (for example, sunpro.lic,sp1, or sunpro.lic,sp2). 4. Verify the contents and location of the file (it should be placed in the directory indicated in Step 1), then save the file. Your licensed software is ready to use. Problems Getting Your Passwords The most common problems that occur in getting passwords are: Problem Solution Unknown site number Check the licensing agreement for the site number or contact the individual in your organization who signed the licensing agreement. If you still can’t get the site number, contact your SunSoft vendor. The network domain names are not associated with the site number Confirm the site number. If it is correct, you may be requesting passwords for a domain not associated with your site as described in the license agreement. If you want to add or delete domain names, obtain a Site Identification form from your SunSoft vendor. Problems Getting Your Passwords 7 Domain-Based Password Request Form Complete this form for each product and/or site for which you are requesting a password for a license.
