Célimène Daudet Translation Patricia BLAIS Photos Hadrien DAUDET During the First World War (1914-1918), violinist and composer Lucien Durosoir has a tin trunk made for him to preserve the music scores which follow him to the Front. In this “soldier’s trunk” there are sonatas, salon pieces…music from happy days to which is added the Watercolours, the first composition of the artist created at the Front, but finished after the war. It is this moving ensemble that Célimène Daudet and Amanda Favier deliver to us on their way through the Emirates. Madame Magazine went to meet the two artists for a three-way interview. 37 Culture M a d a me M a g a z i ne: D e pu i s qu a nd vou s connaissez-vous? Madame Magazine: How long have you known each other for? We have known each other a long time. The world of classical musicians is very small, and we used to come across each other regularly at different festivals. We very much wanted to work together and our collaboration started up around this project. We were determined to work as a duo, always looking for dialogue, naturally in the sonatas, but also in the other pieces. MM: How is such a passion for an instrument born? CD: There was always music at my parents’ home when I was a child. I remember adoring Mozart very early on and his piano sonatas as well as his operas, which we listened to very often! It is therefore completely naturally that this instrument took up a place in my life and became a need and a huge passion. AF: I fell head over heels for music listening to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring when I was 4 years old at Pleyel. I started music with the piano then a family friend who was an orchestra conductor offered me a violin for my 6th birthday and right from the start, the choice of this instrument was established for me. I felt an immediate attraction to it and I knew immediately that I would be a violinist. MM: what link do you have to the French Institute? We have already played at several French Institutes across the world. The one in the UAE interests us even more as we are seeing us opening into the culture of The Emirates: it is, moreover, here that we will play for the first time the programme, “Dans la malle du poilu”, (In the soldier’s trunk) a starting-off point of a series of concerts which will follow in 2014… MM: what would you say about this concert? It is a specific repertoire. Lucien Durosoir imagined he would work on his violin when he was sent to the 38 MM: quel lien avez-vous avec l’Institut Français? Front. On the front line, he however lived in extremely difficult conditions and scarcely was able to play. His music was so precious to him that he had this trunk made to protect his scores .It is precisely these pieces(some of them unedited) that we discovered in his house in the south of France. His son is very active in promoting and developing the memory of this great violinist and composer. Reading with emotion these sheets full of the past, we discovered pieces of great musical and historical interest. The idea was sown to compose a programme around this strong theme of music in war. In parallel to the concerts, it seemed obvious to us to cut this programme as a CD. This will come out on Arion in the Autumn.
